Finding My Way

Taking Advantage

Sooner than expected, the lunch bell rings and the majority of my classmates dismiss themselves to the cafeteria. As a group Taehyung, Hoseok, Seokjin and I walk into the hallways. I put a hand to my head. “Ah, I forgot my lunch bag… And Jimin. You guys go first, we’ll meet you there.”

I rush back towards the classroom and stand right at the door. A smile comes across my eyes as I begin to call for Jimin, but I stop myself as I observe his and Suga’s actions. I hurriedly hide in the hallway, peeking into the classroom with half of my face and a hand on the wall. Jimin doesn’t budge from his seat, oddly. Suga, with wide eyes, stares down the desk in front of him. The room is occupied with little chatters from small cliques, disengaging in the awkward atmosphere Jimin and Suga were creating. Suga slams his hand on his desk, silencing the room. “Get out.”

What is he doing? Both of them. Why isn’t Jimin reacting to Suga’s actions?

“I SAID GET OUT!” Suga yells and stands on his feet. I cringe from his demanding and rusty voice. Without another peep, everyone, besides Jimin, leaves, barely noticing me as they scurry to the cafeteria.

“What the hell are you doing here?” Suga asks in a deep tone. “I thought I told you to stay in Seoul with him and never return.”

Him? What-

“Some people don’t have a choice, unlike you who was handed everything on a silver plate. Yoongi.” Jimin finally moves a muscle and turns his head to meet Suga in the eye. I hesitate and pull back from view in hopes that Jimin didn’t spot me. Slowly, I return at my place and listen in.

“It’s Suga now, Jiminnie. Suga. So, your at the orphanage now, ey? I’m sure you’ve met my old pals.” Suga briefly, and sarcastically smiles.

“How’d you know?”

“You walked in with Jaemi.”

“Ironically, I’m staying in your room.” Jimin says, nodding his head. “And yes, I’ve met them. The ones you never introduced me to when I was here at that time.”

“There wasn’t a need to. I hated you back then and that feeling is still standing. Why should I open my life up to you when for all I know, you’ll crush it with your manipulative mind.” Suga gives a dull expression.

“So they were your life back then...?”Jimin attempts to refrain from laughing. “That wasn’t what you told me. I don’t manipulate people. The only person who’ll crush your life is yourself.”

Suga balls his hands into fists, but quickly calms his nerves.

“How are things with your new family? An old friend of mine told me you haven’t set foot in that household since you were enrolled into this high school. Did you get kicked out or something?” Jimin asks, changing the subject. Suga slumps back in his seat and folds his fingers together on his desk. Complete silence. “You can tell me you know.”

Suga scoffs and ruffles his hair, roughly. “I’m not making the same mistake twice by telling you anything.”

“Did you take advantage of them? Like you did to us, Byeol and your ‘old pals?’”

“Shut up.” Suga breathes. “You don’t know anything about me.”

“Because your not letting me know… I understood you one or two years ago.” Jimin grins, reminded of the memories he had here.

My eyes widen. Jimin knows about Suga’s past? He knew about the orphanage before even showing up at the front door.

“That’s only because of Jungkook.” Suga heaves a long sigh and peers at the ceiling. Jungkook. “You two bastards had to show up that day. That month. It changed everything. For me, Namjoon… and Jaemi.

Jungkook, Suga, Jimin and Namjoon all know each other. How come I never got in the middle of this, yet Suga mentions my name? I was with Jungkook ‘one or two years ago.’ He never told me he was still in touch with Jimin, let alone his visits to Buncheon.

From behind, someone pushes me into the room and I immediately regret eavesdropping.

“Namjoon! Jaemi! The two people I was hoping to come across during lunch.” Suga throws his hands up and forces a wide smile. I glance to my right and find Namjoon grinning at me.

“I see your talking with Jaemi’s new boyfriend.” Namjoon teases.

“Jaemi! Did you forget something?” Jimin says with a cheery voice, ignoring Namjoon’s comment. Should I admit that I’ve been listening to their conversation? Or will Namjoon do that for me. I open my mouth to reply, but Suga interrupts.

“I didn’t get a chance to greet you this morning, Jae.” Suga smirks and turns his head to Jimin. Jimin’s smile disappears almost instantly.

“Only I can call her that.” Jimin snares at Suga and reverts, with a grin, to me. “Can I join you for lunch?”

Jimin begins to stand, but Suga pulls him down back into his seat. “I’m not done talking to you.”

“Don’t touch me. Your lucky I’m not Jungk-” Jimin stops himself and blinks at me in panic.

“Or else he would’ve killed me? Yeah. I know. At least your nice enough to even speak to me. There wouldn’t be words said with him, only fists and blood. A civil war.” Suga leans back in his chair, smirking.

“On another note, she is my girlfriend.” Suga gazes Jimin to Namjoon. I raise an eyebrow. Where is he going with this?

“Since when.” Jimin folds his arms in disbelief and Namjoon sits down at Taehyung’s desk, shaking his head.

“Since Jungkook contacted me.” Suga smiles and shows Jimin his text messages with Jungkook. “He told me to protect her and that’s what I’ve been doing. That’s what boyfriends do.”

“I’m here now. If he knew that, he’d trust me to protect her ten times more than he would to you.” Jimin disagrees, carelessly throwing the phone on his desk. He lowers his voice. “I highly doubt he’d contact you in the first place.”

“I am no ones girlfriend. Jungkook doesn’t control me, neither should you guys.” I look down at the floor with disappointment. “It’s only now that I find out you four were friends. Friends for two years.”

“Oh, we aren’t friends.” Suga laughs, hysterically and points to Jimin. “I want to kill him for what he’s done to my life.”

“You blame your own problems on me and everyone else around you because you don’t know how to take responsibility for your own actions.” Jimin stands up at the same time as Namjoon.

“Watch your words.” Namjoon squints at Jimin. “It’s two against one. Don’t make us hurt you… or Jaemi.”

I thought… I thought Namjoon wouldn’t harm me. Why use me as a threat?

“Four against two.” Taehyung says from behind. I spin around, revealing three boys at the door. Taehyung walks in front of me as an act of protection. “If you or Suga dare to touch my Jaemi, your dead.”

Your Jaemi?” Suga laughs as Hoseok and Seokjin come to my side. “And what does Jaemi have to say about this?”

“I-” Eyes are on me and I stare hard at the ground. “I don’t know what to say, or believe, anymore. I have somewhere to be. Sorry.”

Without another word, I leave the classroom with my belongings. I take the train back to the orphanage. In search of Byeol. A sharp pain grows in my back, like I was stabbed with a knife. Two years ago, during the summertime, Jungkook took a family vacation. At that time, I lost contact with Jimin for almost a year. Jungkook was gone for a month. Suga said that month changed everything not only for Namjoon or himself, but me. Why me? Where do I fit into this picture? How did Suga even know me back then?

I walk into the kitchen, but Byeol is nowhere to be found. I bit my lower lip and search the hallways.

(Chapter 12)

He lifts me up and pulls me into a tight embrace. My hands hide my face as his arms wrap around my waist and chest.

“I’m sorry.” Suga’s hot breath says into my ears. “I shouldn’t have played that song.”

I wipe my tears and attempt to calm down. ‘How does he know? How does he know I danced to that song? How does he know I dance?’

“Were you there?” I ask between my quiet wails. “During that performance? The night my parents and his father died?”

No response. I wriggle from his tight embrace and let my arms hang. I bury my face into his shoulder and slowly lift my arms to gently wrap around him.

“I’m sorry.” He whispers.

Suga’s been to Seoul before. I’m sure the night of the performance wasn’t the first time he was in Seoul. With the money he had from his foster parents, he must’ve had privileges and allowances. Jimin was right. Suga took advantage of his family. He might’ve brought Namjoon along.

“Byeol!” I almost yell, startling Byeol.

“Oh goodness, I thought you were a ghost or something! Why are you here at this time?” Byeol puts two hands on her hips.

“Can I please have my phone? My paycheck from work comes in a week. I beg you. I just need to make a phone call. A single text message. Anything.” I kneel on my knees and gaze at her shoes.

“Alright.” Byeol heaves a big sigh. “Come with me.”

She leads to the storage room and unlocks the door with her keys. “I never do this with the boys, but since you’ve been a huge help around here, I’m doing this for you. I’m letting you have your phone a week before your paycheck comes. Don’t take advantage of these privileges.”

I accept my phone from her hands, like I’ve just won the lottery and hug her tight. “Thank you.”

I run to my room and accidentally slam the door. It’s time to find some answers.
