But You Love Me

Chapter 13 - I'm Here For You

Hyemin called me hours before we were even going to the movies with Seokjin and his friend.
“What do I wear?”
“Anything Hyemin, Seokjin won’t care about that!”
“Well… what colour does he like? Maybe I can wear something in that colour…”
In the middle of dinner Hyemin pounds me with questions. I drop my fork in annoyance.
“HYEMIN-AH! STOP FREAKING OUT. I’M HANGING UP… I want to finish my dinner…”
“Wait, Saeyong-ah I-“ Hyemin gets cuts off as I end the call. I slam the phone down slightly on the table with a sigh. I look up to see my parents staring at me worried. “Don’t worry, it’s just Hyemin freaking out as usual,” I say calmly picking up my fork to continue dinner.

====================================================================

I meet up with Hyemin at the bus stop, and she’s still was freaking out over what to wear. While trying to calm her down we caught our bus and met up with Seokjin and his friend.
The whole time we purchased the tickets and food, I tried my best to push Hyemin and Seokjin together. Sitting down for the film I knew was going to be crucial, however… Seokjin had already arranged it. It was seated with Seokjin’s friend, then me, then Seokjin, and lastly Hyemin. “Can’t we change the seats?” I asked quietly and slightly desperately to Seokjin as we walked across the row to our seats.
“No, I bought them like this. Plus, I like it like this.” He said to me quietly as we arrived to our seats. If the lighting wasn’t so dark, I could have sworn he was being sort of bashful…

Throughout the film, which was a comedy, I talked to Seokjin’s friend asking him subtly questions…
“So… does Seokjin have someone he admires?” I whispered to him, while he stuffed popcorn in his mouth.
“Like an idol?” His eyes slowly turning to me and off the movie.
“No like a… girl?” I said moving closer as to not let Seokjin notice. He scoffed slightly and leaned towards so he was positioned to talk into my ear.
“It’s you he likes.” He said as if it should have been obviously. My heart drops suddenly. Memories of us ran through my head. Not Seokjin… He doesn’t does he…?
I turn my head slowly towards Seokjin and after a while, he notices. He likes me? My best friend? Oh no… Hyemin-ah. He smiles back and even in the dark, his eyes smile is noticeable. I crack a smile through my rush of emotions and turn my attention back to the movie. This can’t be happening…

===================================================================

Still in disbelief, trying to convince myself Seokjin’s friend was wrong, we all sit on the bus. Somehow the only thing I was able to do right this evening was pair Hyemin next to Seokjin on this bus trip. I sit with Seokjin’s friend in the row behind them. “You must be lying…” I say trailing off as I watch Hyemin flirting with Seokjin.
"You don’t believe me?” He says looking at me. He lean in to whisper in my ear once again, “Seokjin, wherever he is will check how you are. Ever noticed him suddenly turn to you in the middle of nothing?” He explains to me. Suddenly the many, many times Seokjin has turned around to check on me run through in the head. I scoff still trying to believe this isn’t happening.
“You’re lying.” I say shaking my head slightly. As if on command, Seokjin turns around to meet my eyes. I stare back, realising he was right. Seokjin smiles at me softly, and my response… a fake smile.
The rest of the ride I tried to distract myself from the sudden news. Talking Seokjin’s friend about the film and his favourite parts. When I got to my stop, I noticed Hyemin has fallen asleep on Seokjin’s shoulders. I get up to get off, waving at Seokjin’s friend. As I walk down aisle my wrist get caught by someone. I turn to see Seokjin holding my wrist, smiling. “I enjoyed today, than you for coming.” he says softly with a smile on his face, blinking slowly at me. Not wanting to get in the way of Hyemin’s crush, I reply with a still laugh and smile, “me too Seokjin. Look after Hyemin will you?” With that he nods and watches me get off the bus. When I get off, I wave to Seokjin on the bus until I’m no longer able to see him. I slouch slightly thinking about what i’m going to do now. How do I know he actually likes me like his friend says he does? Needing a hug, I think of Yoongi and our hugs. Warm and soft… I wonder what he’s doing today…
As if by wish, I turn around to see Yoongi starts a metre away from the bus stop kicking stones around looking bored. A smile lights my face immediately and I jog up to him. “Yoongi-ah!”
“You scared me…” He looks up startled by keeps his normal voice tone.
“What are you doing here?” I ask him, curious why he’s so far away from home. He could have used the time to study...
“I was… walking…” He says looking over my shoulder and around me as if he was searching for something. Confused I wait for him to answer more clearly.
“Where’s that Seokjin guy?”
“Seokjin-ah? He’s… on the bus… wait, how did you know I was with him?” I say even more confused. The conversation taking a weird turn.
“Why isn’t he walking you home?” he says annoyed looking at me for the blame. I blink at him, STILL so very confused.
“He has to drop Hyemin off… is that why you’re here?!” I ask in suspicion. He’s here to walk me home? My inner self starts dancing happily. As if he got caught he looks at me before avoiding eye contact and replying, “well I can’t trust him, and I was right to. He can’t even be trusted to walk you home…"
I start laughing holding my stomach. Yoongi continues to stare at me until I stop laughing… which takes me a while.
“Can I just walk you home already?” He says annoyed.
“Sure!” I say still smiling at him.
As the sun goes down the sky looking a vibrant orange colour. I walk at a really low pace, making the journey as long as possible with Yoongi and he does too. A small smile plays on my lips all the time. “Yoongi-ah~” I say dragging out the end of it.
“Yeah?”
“You still like basketball?”
“Of course. I still want to play in the future.”
Knowing Yoongi’s childhood dream is still alive makes me both sad and happy.
“I’ll be behind you 100% I wish I had a future dream…” I say lingering off as I look up at the vibrant sky.
“But you’re great at so much.” Yoongi says softly to me.
I turn to look at him seeing him smiling at me softly, the way he used to before he started being part of “Bulletproof Boys”. I smile back realising the change he has made.
“What? You mean school?”
“Yeah! There isn’t one subject you arn’t good at.” He says smiling even brighter, without a doubt.
I scoff a laugh at his response and let silence fill out conversation. Until… I remember something.
“You should join the basketball club!” I say suddenly turning towards him.
We stop walking for a moment and I wait for his response.
“Ugh, I dunno…” He stuffs his hands in his pockets and looks at the ground.
“You should! You’ll be amazing! And i’ll be here if you don’t make it.” I say enthusiastically.
He looks up at me with big eyes making my heart race. I smile immediately and nod to encourage him. He sighs in response, “fine, i’ll ask about joining on Monday…”
I jump slightly in happiness. As I finish jumping, I realise we’ve reached my house. We both look at it from the sidewalk almost sad. We turn towards each other so we’re face-to-face. “I’ll be anticipating the rise of your star-sports career!” I say smiling at him. He laughs at this and it’s as if… I see his cheeks turn a light pink.
“Heh… well I dunno about that…” he mumbles and his eyes are stuck on the concrete beneath us. I stare at him for a bit thinking about him. His strength is the strongest i’ve seen in anyone i’ve met. The will power he’s had recently to change himself, has been amazing. Actually, the strength he’s had ever since we were little.
“Yoongi-ah, why did you decide to change so suddenly?” I ask seriously, which brings his eye line up, looking me directly in the eyes. Whenever he does this, looking me in the eyes, it doesn’t just make my heart flutter, but tells me that he’s being his most honest self. That he trusts me.
“Truthfully… for my parents.” He says in his deep voice. My heart escalates as he mentions his parents. I knew them as well.
“Well… you did well, Yoongi.” I say patting his shoulder. Without regret, I close the gap between us and hug his waist tightly. I let the warmth soak in as I close my eyes. And I feel Yoongi’s arms wrap softly around my shoulders. “Have strength.” I say with a smile into his shoulder. I let go of him and we exchange slow blinks at each other, before waving each other off.
