6. Margaux's Dream

"I'm sorry, Shinyeong needs medical attention."

Her sister frowned as she clutched her wallet, checking for her remaining balance inside.

Dismayed than ever, she forced a smile with a frustrated exhale, "I understand, Unnie."

She handed over all that's left to her with yet another forced smile, trying to look optimistic. It's her payday today— she's supposed to be outside right now, having the time of her life and unwinding just for a while but unfortunately. . . her sister needs it— her sister's child needs it more.

Her sister reluctantly reaches for the small envelope, maybe knowing how it really is embarrassing to ask for money. The other one just nodded as an approval as she stretches more, even bending to reach for her sister's hand and the moment she did, she enclosed carefully placed it on her palms.

"I'm really sorry; I hope I can work as soon as Shinyeong turns 3."

"It's okay, Unnie. You don't really have to." She smiled faintly as her sister awkwardly pats her head and leaves the room with a broken smile.

You see, this girl right here— she was adopted by a normal family. . . Not. At first, everything was fine and almost perfect for her. Of course having that thought to search for her real family never did cross her mind to think she had better one. But as she grew closer with them within a short amount of time, her young, innocent mind has unveiled something she shouldn't have known for her age.

Little did she know that her adoptive father was a whole-new level Casanova, in contrast of her adoptive mother who was too naive and gullible to even notice a thing— all that she ever knew is that her husband is a loving partner and caring father of the family. Her older adoptive sister was about 18 the time she was still 10 and they're not really that close to each other; not that they hate each other or anything, it's just that their interests and ideas are highly different to each other, considering their age gap.

It all started when she first heard a bizarre noise in her parents' room. And it continued for days, weeks, and months. . . that she would always hear strange noises in that very room. All of them were girls' noises. Her young mind would tell them apart as some are loud, some are soft; some are average, and so on. She didn't understand why they scream or whimper so she'd worriedly tell her older sister to call for an ambulance to help them but her sister anxiously assured her everything is alright or whenever she would ask about that confusing matter, she never answers.

'Til one day, those screams, groans, and whimpers— they sounded too familiar. . . they surely are from one person— her adoptive sister. She tried to brush it off, keeping into her mind what her sister has told her— it's nothing. Though the noises are a complete bothersome to her ears, she continued to do the household chores while their mother is gone for work. Yes, their mother is a very hard-working woman but once again, is too naive and gullible.

"Oh my god, Shinyang, what have you done?" Her mother gasped, dropping the warm cup of coffee she's been sipping early in the morning when her daughter suddenly brought a shocking news to her.

"I-I don't know, Eomma." She looked down, disgrace and humiliation written all over her face.

The mother sighed in disbelief but as she doesn't want her daughter to feel worse, she pulled in for an embrace to at least hope this would comfort her, "Let's go for a checkup now."

Hearing this, the curious little child followed them to the hospital and eavesdropped in a conversation saying that her sister's already 3 months pregnant, yet the father of the is still anonymous.

Few months later, a deformed boy was born. It was quite a shock because the mother has guided her throughout the pregnancy and everything seemed to have gone well.

But that one early evening, the wife seemed to come home early. It must be a surprise for everyone.

"Honey, I have a good news!"

She put dropped all of her things somewhere and sat down on a couch for a moment to take a little break from the exhausting day but stood up for a moment to announce the good news to her husband— must be a promotion, eh?

The little girl widened her eyes as she stopped from playing with her little green dinosaur stuffed toy her adoptive mother gave her and stood up to excitedly give her a kiss on the cheek.

The mother kissed back, "Look at our little baby growing up so fast!" She giggled at the child making her smile, "I'll just talk to Appa first, okay?" The old woman wrinkled a smile as she patted the child's head to move on and find her husband.

She was too excited to hear the bothering noises so she turned the knob that was surprisingly locked. Fortunately for her, she's got a duplicate key and unlocked the door with the most cheerful tone her voice could exclaim, "Honey I have a—"

Right before her two very eyes is a disturbing scene, making her curse under her breath as the once softened and calmed emotions now flamed up into a fury.

"No, no, no. Th-this is not. . ."

The innocent yet curious child rushed to check on her mother but what her naive eyes saw was far beyond traumatizing so she had to cover her them again and run away. She locked herself inside her room and curled up somewhere in the corner just to hear the loudest screams she's ever heard. Covering her ears was no use as each and every word has left a mark inside her brain. Just when she thought the night would never end with the screams when a horrifying gunshot was heard, followed by a high-pitched screech coming from her sister. The poor child was so terrified she decided not to go out for almost a couple of days. . .

. . . Until she heard the policemen— they are good, as told by her mother so she went out to be greeted by them.

"What's your name, little girl?"

She figured out they were here to investigate and ask her a lot of questions she should answer— not only her, but her sister as well, who has witnessed more than she had seen. They gave her a friendly approach for her to trust them and as they have gained her trust, they led her to their destination.

As soon as they've arrived, she couldn't help but look around anxiously as everything looks extremely uncomfortable for her. Her small but heavy steps were stopped as one of the officers led her into a room and helped her sit beside her sister. And before she could even ask, she was already informed with a heartbreaking news telling her that their mother is dead— it was a suicide, they say. She turned to look at her sister that was shaking violently and tears just couldn't stop coming out of her eyes. She knows her sister will be left scarred for the rest of her life.

After the burial, their father is finally sent to jail with a lifetime penalty. It was proven the father is guilty and is also proven to be more than just guilty. . . but her young mind wouldn't even understand all of it. And what about the two of them— her sister and her? Neither of them was aware that she's pregnant again until she got the symptoms again. She knows her traumatized sister can't be much of help for a while so she did all the working and was lucky enough to be given a chance to study in a free school. It was tough for her age until the amount of money she's been earning for the past years isn't enough to alleviate their needs.

One day while she was working, a certain someone heard her singing and decided to talk to her about something. She realized she was being offered a special career and after all, this could possibly be the opportunity that will help not only her but the only family that's left to her.

"Deal."
