Finding My Way

Miscommunication

I wake up to a knock on the door. I slowly make my way to the door and open it. I widen my eyes as I see, to my surprise, Jungkook.

“Jung-”

He cuts me off by hugging me tightly. Half of my face is buried into his shoulder and I tighten the embrace. What is he doing here?

We stay like this for what seems like hours. The feeling of “home” returns. Everything involving Jungkook makes me feel… satisfied. I smile and feel him start to release from my grasp.

“I never expected to see you here.” I put my hair behind my ear with one hand.

“But here I am… just for you.” Jungkook smiles widely and caresses my hair. “It’s great to see you again, Jae.”

“How did-”

“Shhh.” He hushes me. “Don’t say anything.”

I nod and wait for him to continue.

“I came here for answers.” He explains.

Answers? To what questions?

“...Why haven’t you contacted me?” Jungkook frowns. “I’ve been waiting.”

I gaze straight at his collarbone. “I… didn’t have the time.”

“Don’t you care about me?” He lifts my chin up. “About my mother’s well being? About my well being? About our life together?”

“I do… but-”

“But… you’re too busy living your new lifestyle.” He sighs. “I get it.”

“Jungkook… I’m sorry.” I glower at him. “I know things have been hard. I’ve been meaning to contact you. It’s just…”

The walls of my room peel off like paper, revealing a black abyss. The only light I see is the aura and light in Jungkook. He lets go of me and particles of him begins to disperse.

“Don’t worry, everything will be fine.” Jungkook smiles warmly at me. “As long as you’re with me, right?”

I hesitate. “Right.”

I watch as his body decomposes, particle by particle. Sooner or later, all I see is little dots, glowing. And slowly, they float away, taking the light away. Leaving me in darkness. In the dark abyss. Alone.

7am
Saturday

I wake up, with the instinct of falling. Immediately, I sit up.

It was just a dream.

I rub my eyes and open them slightly. The sun’s morning rays shine through my window. I look down, double checking that I’m in pajamas and not ballet wear.

“As long as you’re with me, right?”

“Right.” I sigh. “I have to contact him.”

------

I walk into the dining hall and find all the children conversing with each other. Hoseok and Seokjin help Byeol pass out breakfast to them. Taehyung walks in behind me.

“Where were you this morning?” He questions. “I missed you.”

“Ewww.” The children respond and laugh.

-Flashback-

“I’m sorry.” He whispers. “My Cheonsa.”“For what.” I push him back. “There’s nothing you should apologise for.”

His arms stay just below my shoulders as let my hands lay freely.

“I feel like it was my fault.” Taehyung looks down. “But in reality, we all know it was Hoseok and Namjoon having difficulties.”

“What was that anyways?” I question, voluntarily walking away from him. I sit and lean my back against the nearest wall as he follows me.

“Hoseok and Namjoon were really close back then. Just like Suga was really close to me. But, things changed and decisions were made. We ended up being enemies instead of staying friends.” Taehyung clicks his feet together. “But our relationships have worsened because you got injured.”

“I did
not get injured.” I raise my eyebrow and turn my head to look at him. “I’m okay.”

“Whatever.” He brushes my comment off. “I know your back hurts.”

I put a hand behind my back. Everytime I make contact with my upper back, it stings. I gaze at Taehyung once more. He criss crosses his legs and slouches his back. He plays with his hands, unsure of what his next move should be. I grin and move, dog-like, to sit in front of him.

“Thank you for caring.” I smile and ruffle his hair. “I’ll see you tomorrow, in the morning.”

“That’s a promise.” Taehyung puts his pinky out.

I chuckle and combine my pinky with his. “I promise.”

-End-

Crap. I forgot about Taehyung.

“Sorry.” I grin. “My mind was somewhere else this morning. Next time, Taehyung.”

“Oh great! You’re awake.” Byeol smiles at me as she sets two trays down on a dining table. “Would you like come breakfast?”

“Yes, please.” I say, sitting down next to Gaejin. “I want what Gaejin is eating.”

Gaejin smiles cutely at me. She uses two hands to feed me a baby carrot.

“Here.” Seokjin comes from behind and places a tray in front of me, identical to Gaejin’s tray.

“Thank you, Seokjin.” I smile at him. “Come join us.”

“I will in a second.” He replies, running to grab a tray of food for himself.

Byeol comes and sits next to me.

“So how’s everything going so far?” She asks. “Is there anything else you need?”

“You want something sweet or sour?” I say, taking a bit into a baby carrot.

“Tell me everything.”

“Everything is going okay.” I sigh, recalling the fight I had in the cafeteria. “Can I have my phone back? I know it’s in your possession. I just… want to check something.”

“Don’t worry.” She laughs. “Jungkook is fine.”

Seokjin, Hoseok and Taehyung pop their heads up.

“Who’s Jungkook?” They ask in harmony.

I ignore their question and center my attention to Byeol. “Please can I just look through my phone?”

“Not until you get yourself a job.” She purses her lips. “I’m not going to pay for your phone bill. I’m already dealing with enough money loss.”

“Alright.” I say, dissapointed. “But Hoseok told me it’s rare to find any job openings around here.”

How will I be able to contact Jungkook?

Gaejin says, chewing her breakfast. “Don’t worry Eonnie, I’m sure you’ll find one soon.”

“If you want to call him sooner, than I suggest you start looking Jaemi. I know it’ll be hard, but you’ll find one. Trust me, there are many opportunities in Buncheon.” Byeol smiles and pats my back. She gets up and walks around the cafeteria to check on the children.

I stand up and walk out of the room. In the hallway, someone grabs my hand I turn to find Taehyung.

“You’re going right now?” He asks, concerned.

“Eo.” I reply as I release from his grasp. “I’ll see you later.”

“Are you sure you know your ways around Buncheon?” Taehyung raises his eyebrow at me.

No.

“Yes.” I say, full with confidence. “I’ve been around here long enough to know the locations of a few places.”

With that, I leave him for my room. I carry my school bag containing my ID and my resume. I would use something else to carry my belongings, but I didn’t have anything.

Lastly, I take the card Byeol gave me the first time I arrived here. Do I need anything else?

I shrug and leave the orphanage.

Instead of taking the train, I walk around the streets, in hopes of finding the perfect job for me.

Seokjin’s POV

6:30pm
Orphanage

“Where is she?” Taehyung asks in concern.

“She’s probably still looking.” Hoseok says.

“Jaemi skipped lunch. I bet she’s hungry.” Byeol sighs with concern.

“Let me go find her.” I offer. “I can bring her food to snack on and perhaps help her look for a job.”

“I wanna go!” Taehyung jumps up, excited. “What a great idea!”

“No, Taehyung you stay here. I need you to entertain the children with Hoseok. Seokjin and I will go looking for her.” Byeol orders.

“Can I come along?” Gaejin questions. “It’ll be a fun adventure for me.”

“Sure.” I smile at her. “You can tag along with me.”

I shift my position to Byeol.

“I can go alone. Buncheon isn’t a huge city. Besides, I’m with Gaejin.” I suggest.

“Well, if you say so. But have your phone on ring. I can never get through to you guys because you leave it on vibrate. There should be some leftovers for her in the kitchen.” Byeol nods and walks towards dorms. “Let’s go you two.”

Hoseok and Taehyung follow behind her.

“Find her quickly.” Taehyung says turning around. “I don’t want her wandering out on the streets when it’s dark.”

“Taehyung!” Byeol calls for him in an angry fashion.

“Coming!” He replies, dashing down the hallway and out of sight.

Gaejin laughs as I chuckle. Once we finish packing Jaemi’s dinner, we set out on the streets to search for her.

Here we come, Jaemi.

------

Jaemi’s POV

“It’s been hours and I still haven’t found a suitable job.” I say, talking to myself. “Should I just go home? The sun is going to set soon.”

The sun is almost completely set. The sky is pink. I walk on the side of the street. A street that has no sidewalks. Someone runs past me, trailing with a long gust of wind that messes up my hair.

Once I brush my hair out of my face, his identity is revealed.

Suga?

I watch as he gets chased by three men. He runs down a street, a dead end.

He isn’t going to make it.

I run down the other street, parallel to the one he currently is on. There’s a small pathway in between buildings. I spot him catching his breath.

“Suga!” I whisper and catch his attention. I notion, with my hands, for him to walk through the pathway.

He looks back once before running through the pathway.

“Su-”

Before I’m able to finish the first word on my sentence, he grabs my wrist and forces me to run with him.

“Hey!” I complain.

“SHH!” He says. “Not here.”

We finally stop running at another pathway in between two tall buildings. I catch my breath.

“Why were you being chased?” I question. “You’re crazy.”

“I got my own reasons.” Suga replies, cracking his neck. “What are you doing out here on your own?”

“I got my own reasons.” I shrug and begin to walk out of hiding. “I have somewhere to be.”

“You finding yourself a job?” Suga guesses and I turn around to face him.

“How did you know?” I raise my eyebrow, though it’s not too visible.

He points to the hand that holds my resume. He’s perceptive.

“I highly doubt you’ll find a job.” He folds his arms and leans on the wall of a building. “Not around this town anyways.”

I heave a long sigh. “You don’t think I know that? It’s the only way to…”

Why am I opening up to him? He’s the one who hurt me.

“What is it to you?” I say, fixing my answer to his comment. “I figured you only cared about yourself.”

“I never said I cared about you. Nor did I say I didn’t.” Suga shrugs.

I turn my head to look straight into his eyes and I walk a few steps forward.

“Then what was that yesterday?” I shift my weight to one leg and put a hand on my hip.

“You ticked me off. No one addresses me by my real name.” Suga admits and unfolds his arms, leaving them hanging.

“You let the principal address you that way.” I counter.

“How did you know that?” He widens his eyes and stands up straight. “Were you eavesdropping?”

“I happened to be there while you were in a meeting with the principal. That’s how I learned your real name, Min-”

“DON’T say it.” He stops me. “This day is getting worse by the minute. Why did you help me from those men?”

“I won’t answer that until you tell me how you’re associated with them.” I fold my arms. “Who were those guys? Why were you being chased?”

And we’re back to square one.

“They just seek trouble. And I assume you know me well enough to understand that all I am is trouble. Therefore, they seek for me.” Suga shrugs. “It’s nothing big.”

“Did you steal something?” I ask, leaning closer.

I find him indirectly blushing due to the small amount of space between us.

“No I did not steal.” He scoffs, pushing me back gently. “You think I’m that kind of person?”

I ignore his question and look down. Do I?

“Well… whatever.” Suga brushes my silence off. “I don’t care what you think of me anyways.”

There’s a few seconds of silence before I say something.

“I have to resume my search.” I mutter an excuse and walk out of the pathway. “I don’t want to keep you from where you have to be.”

You miss Jungkook that much?” Suga whispers just as I’m out of hiding.

I stop in my tracks and feel goosebumps rise up my body. My eyes widen. Suga… know’s Jungkook?

“Jaemi!” Gaejin calls for me.

I turn my head to find Gaejin and Seokjin running towards me. I shake my head and snap out of my thoughts. I smile and wave at them. As they approach me, I look back at the pathway to find no signs of Suga there.

Suga…
