Finding My Way
My lips part as I attempt to speak, but no words come out of my mouth as I watch Jaemi and Jungkook have a moment.
“J-jungkook.” Her voice is shaky, I don’t blame her. It’s the best way to gain her trust.
Immediately, Jungkook pulls her into a tight embrace, he too wearing an expensive tuxedo. His hair is slicked back and he wears a red rose compared to my white one. I hear Jungkook sob and I can’t help but laugh at how stupid it sounds. He buries his face into her bare shoulder and I can tell she’s almost in the same state he’s in. Yes, that’s right. Reuniting them is the best thing to do for them. The best way to make my plan successful.
It takes them a few minutes to gather their thoughts and converse, like they’re the only two people on earth. They release from their hug, but Jungkook still holds her closely. Typical.
My stumble growls and I continue to eat from my bowl of soup.
“How’d you get here? And where did you get this… gorgeous… dress?” Jungkook’s face is stained with tears. “How’d you find me…?”
I feel their eyes on me and I raise my head to glare at Jungkook. I fake a half smile and stand up.
“It’s the least I can do for you.” I say directly to Jungkook. I walk towards, them, heading to the front desk to pay for the bill. I stop when I’m right next to Jungkook and speak so only he hears. My gaze is to the hostess, but I know he’s still looking at me. “Murderer.”
Suga mumbles something before heading to the front and Jungkook turns to me with a petrified expression. “Wh-what’s wrong? What did he say to you.”
He holds me by the shoulders and looks at me with wide eyes. “Jaemi, listen to me. Whatever you do, don’t get too close to Suga. He’s dangerous. He’ll hurt you. I’m not going to be there to protect you in Buncheon. I won’t be able to-”
“...Jimin’s there.” As he started to ramble about Yoongi, my mind came back from the moon. Jungkook’s been lying to me. About Jimin. About Summer. Yoongi isn’t the only one with secrets. “What’ve you been hiding from me?”
I push myself away from him and hold my hands together in front of my chest.
“Jae.” Yoongi says from behind. “Is something wrong?”
Yoongi starts walking towards me but is stopped by Jungkook. “Don’t touch her.”
“Like you have the authority to tell me what I can and can’t do. Especially with Jaemi.”
“You told me, promised me you wouldn’t bring her into this.” Jungkook says in a low tone, but I still manage to make of his words. Into what…
“Not here, Jungkook.” Yoongi grumbles and pushes past Jungkook. He comes to me with a warm expression. “Let’s go to Jungkook’s place.”
“What?” Jungkook says from behind, taking the words right out of my mouth.
“I’m sure he wouldn’t mind us staying there, would you Jungkook?”
“Of course I mind. You’re out of your right mind, Suga.” Jungkook shakes his head. “I was never in the right mind to begin with.” Suga heaves a sigh and grows a smirk on his face. “Would you like us to go somewhere else then? Alone? Together…?”
Jungkook curses to himself and glances at Suga with a hateful expression. “Fine.”
Suga puts a hand behind me, almost pushing me to follow Jungkook out the door. He stops at the curb of the sidewalk and unlocks his car. He opens the passenger door for me and waits until I settle in the seat to close the door. I wait patiently in the car as Jungkook and Suga conflict each other outside.
Yoongi brought me here to see Jungkook. He planned for this to happen. Weeks ago, as said by the hostess. We barely knew each other a few weeks ago. But it seems he’s known me for more than a few weeks. Jungkook and Suga were talking about something earlier in the restaurant. Something happened in the past that involves me. Why don’t I know about this? Why can’t I know about this?
Yoongi opens the back door and aggressively slams the door behind him. My body jumps a little from the sudden noise. Soon after, Jungkook hops in the car with a smile. He starts the car and shifts onto the main road.
“You got your driver's license.” I say, almost smiling. I’m proud of him.
“Yeah… my mother got me this car as soon as she heard.” Jungkook replies, shyly and Suga scoffs. Ignoring Suga, Jungkook takes my hand and rubs his thumb gently on my skin. “It’s really good to see you, Jaemi.”
I clear my throat, trying to dodge his sweet comment. “Speaking of your mother, how is she doing?”
“She’s on a business trip, sadly. She would’ve been so happy to see you. You-”
“Could you step on it? I feel so claustrophobic in this tux.” He tugs on his tie and collar shirt with a hand.
Jungkook clears his throat and I sense his fear for Suga. I give a gentle squeeze to Jungkook as an act of comfort. I wish I knew what happened between them.
It’s so silent, you can hear my phone buzzing and receiving notifications in Suga’s bag. He hands my the phone, causing me to break touch with Jungkook. “Turn it off.”
I heave a sigh from Suga’s bossiness. I turn my phone on silent and check my messages. All of them were from Taehyung, Hoseok and Seokjin.
Taehyung: Where are you?
Taehyung: Why aren’t back yet?
Taehyung: Please, come back. I need to talk with you.
Taehyung: There’s been a misunderstanding, Jae. Please.
Taehyung: I miss you like crazy.
Taehyung: I’m waiting at the pond for you to return… you’ll come back right?
Taehyung: Answer me…
I scroll down the messages and debate on whether or not I should respond to him. I check Hoseok’s messages sent to me.
Hoseok: Why did Suga take you?
Hoseok: You know I beat up Namjoon for holding us back. I can’t believe we let you slip away so easily.
Hoseok: Come back. For Taehyung’s sake. He’s worried sick about you. He even skipped dinner, which is very unlikely for him.
Hoseok: Just so you know, he wasn’t the one who kissed Irene… Irene kissed him.
I shake my head with disbelief. Yeah right. I saw with my own eyes.
I go out of his messages and into Seokjin’s. A single text message, sent a few minutes ago.
Seokjin: Byeol will be asking about you. I know you didn’t leave intentionally.
Me: Seokjin… I can trust you, right?
He responds almost immediately.
Seokjin: Are you okay? He didn’t hurt you… right?
Me: He took me to Seoul. To see a friend. I don’t know why or how. Please don’t tell the others, especially Taehyung or Byeol.
Seokjin: What would you like me to do?
Me: Cover for me? I know I’ll be back within a few days, or even one. I just need transportation. Suga’s my transportation, so for now, I’ll have to deal with him.
Seokjin: Be safe. I don’t have any idea of what Seoul is like, but I know it’s worse than here. More chaotic, especially with Suga on your watch.
Me: Thank you for everything.
Seokjin: I’m giving you two days. If you don’t come back by then, I’m assuming the worse and confronting Byeol about this situation.
Me: I’ll contact you if anything. I promise.
With that, I immediately delete my conversations, just in case someone comes snooping into my phone. I take a deep breath and stare at Taehyung’s desperate messages he’s sent me. I can’t just leave in the dark. That’s what Suga did to him. I don’t want him to experience the same thing over again. Regardless of what’s he done.
Taehyung: Answer me…
Me: Don’t worry about me. I’ll be back within a few days. Just focus on school work. And Irene.
Taehyung: Kim Jaemi!
Taehyung: Stop disappearing without my knowledge, I can’t stop worrying about you.
Taehyung: Especially when your with Suga.
Taehyung: Are you hurt? Did he hurt you? Where are you? When will you be coming back?
[Taehyung is typing…]
I bit my lips and shut my phone off just as Jungkook parks the car on his driveway. At least I have Seokjin covering for me.
Jungkook hands me a white t-shirt and a pair comfortable pants. “I still have your clothes you left here whenever you’d stay over the night.”
“You still kept these…?” I say, almost amazed. He must’ve missed me a lot.
I leave for the bathroom to shower and change. When I come back, Jungkook’s in the kitchen and Suga’s showering in the other bathroom. How can these two just… act like it’s okay to be around each other and act like nothing’s happened? So… casual.
I sit at his table and he sits in front of me, placing down a plate full of food for me. “Are you hungry?”
As I begin to eat, I perceive his eyes are on me. He leans over and feels my damp hair. I lift head to watch a smile grow on his face. The slam of the bathroom door startles us and he sits up straight in his chair. Suga groans and walks lazily to the table. He sits at the open seat next to me and uses my arm as a pillow. Jungkook pulls his hair upwards, making Suga follow him to sit upright.
“Ah, that hurts!” He flicks Jungkook’s hand away from him and leans back in his chair. There’s a few minutes of silence as Suga watches us eat. A smirk grows on his face as he fixes his posture, leaning against the table. “So, should we talk about Daegu?”
Jungkook almost chokes on his food and stands up swiftly to get a glass of water. He stays by the kitchen sink, filling and drinking a glass of water. Ignoring his interruption, Suga continues. “Jaemi, have you been?”
“Eo, but when I was younger.” I nod my head. “I heard your from Daegu.”
“Yeah, Taehyung and I are from Daegu.” Suga nods his head. Jungkook, spits his drink out into the sink and coarsely coughs. “...Are you okay, Jungkookie?”
I watch how Suga chuckles at how the very few words he asks me affects Jungkook drastically. “I never knew Taehyung was from Daegu.”
“Me too.” Suga laughs and heaves a sigh, causing him to make an off-pitched sound. Jungkook walks back over and puts a glass of water in front of me.
“Jimin, Jaemi and I actually went to Daegu before, Suga… but you already knew that.” Jungkook winks at Suga and sits down, calmly.
“I didn’t know Jaemi was with you two on that trip. I certainly didn’t see her there when it happened.” Suga raises an eyebrow at Jungkook. “You want to me to continue?”
Jungkook looks down, slouching.
“You did tell me you didn’t want to get her involved.” Suga stands up, putting two hands on the table.
Jungkook stays quiet as Suga impatiently waits for a response. Suga’s words replay in my mind. ‘I certainly didn’t see her there when it happened.’
My eyes twitch and I revert my eyes from the table, to Jungkook, to Suga. I stand up and bow briefly. “Excuse me. I’m going to get some rest… I have to digest the food, and everything that happened today.”
I leave them speechless at the table and walk myself up the stairs to one of the two guest rooms. I turn the lights off in my room and lay down, letting the rays of the moon stain the wooden floor. I close my eyes, trying to process words and put pieces together. I remember Taehyung telling me how Suga came to the orphanage from Daegu in 2008. That’s the same year when Jimin, Jungkook and I went to Daegu with our families for a spring vacation. Jimin and Jungkook were in Daegu a few days before my family and I came to join them.
