When We Are Apart [BTS Love Story]

Chapter 10

Jaehwa's POV

After class the next day, it was back to the coffee shop for me. I groaned as I wiped yet another table off of its coffee stains and oddly shaped tissues. The strong smell of a freshly brewed coffee filled my nostrils, numbing my senses almost completely.

Disgusting.

I coughed and rushed to the counter where my dad was making a nice cup of caramel latte for the young female customer.

"What's with your face?" He growled teasingly after he handed off the drink. "Don't like the smell?"

"Nope." I growled back. Which wasn't entirely true.

I grew up to the smell of coffee and I have become accustomed to it. Its rich flavours, its familiar atmosphere and-

"Richard?" I almost choked as I saw who walked in through the entrance.

Two hooded figures, one of Richard and one that was unmistakably Rap Monster.

"What are you doing here?" I whispered and pushed them to a hidden seat near the back of the cafe.

"Came for coffee." Richard said grinning from ear to ear. "And he wanted to come see you."

Rap Monster lowered his hood and shook out his messy hair. It hasn't been styled today and it reminded me of the way Suga's hair was that day at the office. Messy and untamed.

I looked over at the door almost hoping he'd come following after. "Just you?"

"Taehyung didn't come today, sorry." He muttered.

My jaw hardened at the sound of his name. Now why would I want to see him?

I rolled my eyes and slapped my hand lightly on the table. "What would you like to drink?"

"Americano!" Richard said cheerfully.

"I'm here for a conversation." Rap Monster leaned towards me.

I looked at him and raised an eyebrow. "Sorry, we don't serve that here."

I walked away before he had a chance to respond and returned moments later with Richard's drink. He grabbed me by the wrist as I placed the drink down on the table.

"No really Jaehwa, he really wants to talk to you."

I narrowed my eyes and stared at his hand on me. "And I, really don't."

"It's like Taehyung is dead." Rap Monster started, yet my eyes stayed fixed on the hand Richard had on me. "He comes late to practice, sleeps at the cafeteria and always insists that he cleans the studio after us."

I scoffed and shook my hand out of Richard's grip. "And? How does this concern me?"

"He's waiting for you to come back." He said it as if it was the simplest thing in the world. "He's waiting for your forgiveness and return."

"What, is he in love with me? Can't he live without me?"

He didn't answer.

"Exactly," I continued. "He'll get over it, just like he did with the the Big Bang incident."

Rap Monster and Richard stayed silent, exchanging a worried glance.

I clicked my tongue impatiently and turned on my heels.

Even if I did want to go back, it would be impossible. My aunt will never accept me again.

"He might be." Rap Monster's voice cracked.

My head twitched slightly towards him. "What?"

"Taehyung I mean," he said, this time more confidently. "He might be in love with you."

My mind was blank for a few minutes before I could decide an appropriate reaction. I blinked and stood there, frozen in the spot.

"Yah, what are you saying?" Richard whispered.

"How are you going to take responsibility for that Jae? He might really like you." Rap Monster ignored him completely.

Responsibility? Me?

Why do I have to take responsibility?

Jungkook's POV

I put down my tray of food directly across where Taehyung was sitting. He looked up, startled at the sudden noise, then, after recognizing that it was me, laid his head down again.

"You're too much Tae." I muttered and poked him once on the arm.

He swatted my hand away, but remained in the position.

"How long are you going to stay like this, she's not coming back." I said quickly.

He glared up at me and heaved a long and heavy sigh. "Don't you have anywhere else to be?"

I scoffed. "Tae, your being stupid, when are you going to get over this?"

He didn't seem to hear me.

I stuffed a spoonful of rice into my mouth and stared at him while I chewed. Taehyung hasn't smiled in more than a week, and it was all her fault.

"She's not going to come back, her aunt isn't going to let her." I repeated. "Those photos are posted on the office bulletin board as a warning to all the workers."

His head twitched, but his forehead remained glued to his arm. I raised an eyebrow. He's interested.

"Didn't you hear that some of the stylists were fired as well?" I continued.

"Jeon Jungkook, what is your point." He snapped and sat up straight in his spot.

"She's not coming back, as long as she's got an emotional attachments to you, she can't come back." I explained, straightening up myself.

He bit his lip then ran a hand through his hair to comb back the strands in his eyes.

"Who said she's got an emotional attachment to me?" He asked quietly. "Who said it's not the other way around?"

"What?" I gripped my chopsticks hard. He said what I was afraid he'd say. "What did you say?"

He groaned and shriveled up in his seat again. "I don't know what I said."

"She's always on my mind Jungkook, you don't understand. I expect to see her everywhere I go and feel dizzy with guilt every time I enter the office."

He paused to take a deep wavering breath.

"I keep replaying her words in my head over and over again." He groaned. "Did you know? She regrets meeting me."

"She's not the only worker here, there are others." I tried to comfort him.

"She was there for me when even you guys weren't." He said slowly. "She listened to me, talked with me, all of the things you guys were too busy for."

I tilted my head curiously. When was this?

"I really miss her." His voice was soft now and barely audible over the clatter of the cafeteria. I sat across him, hunched over my lunch, and watched as my close friend collapsed into a heap of despair.

I put down my chopsticks and patted him on the head. "If you don't be careful, some might think you actually like h-"

In an instant, he let out a yelp and grabbed me by the shoulders. I stared at him startled and totally forgot where I was going with my sentence.

"That's it!" He shook me roughly. "That's it Jungkook, I like her!"

What?

"It's got to be like that, that's why she's always on my mind." His mouth stretched into a smile.

I watched as he grabbed his jacket and turned for the cafeteria door.

"W-where are you going?" I asked hesitantly, still not understanding what had really happened.

"To find Hoseok, he'll help me." He grinned.

"What, h-how?" I asked, raising my voice to catch up with him but it was too late.

Taehyung sped out of the door and headed towards the studio without stopping for anything. I frowned as I looked at the spot that Taehyung was just moments earlier and cursed under my breath.

This wasn't what I wanted.

I stood up and returned the tray to the front counter before following after Taehyung.

No, this wasn't what I wanted at all.

I gritted my teeth as I remembered Taehyung's pathetic behaviour at the cafeteria table. In the years that I've known him, I have never seen him like that, let alone for a girl that he's only barely met.

No,
I want the old Taehyung back.

Even if it means destroying
Taehyung's so called first love.
