The Thirteenth Key

♔Chapter Six♔

Aera looked around at her surroundings. The sunlight beamed down on her. They had been walking for hours in this forest, yet Aera never spoke a word to the two behind her. They often exchanged words as if catching on each other's lives. Aera would have listened, but she cared not of them. All she needed were their pendants. Aera subconsciously reached up to her pendant and clutched onto it.

Lay and Suho watched the girl before them. They didn't care about her, they didn't know her, and they didn't trust her.

"Is she the seeker for the-"

"I don't know," Suho shook his head. "I really don't."

"I don't think she is," Lay said.

"To be honest, I don't think she is either."

Lay nodded.

"Well, she is different like you mentioned," he said.

"Yup, more of cold person. I've never met someone as mean and scary as her," Suho joked, although what he said was the truth.

Aera looked through the forest. Her eyes widened when she saw an opening up front. She ran forwards. Lay and Suho’s eyes widened.

“Hey!” Lay yelled.

“What’s her problem?” Suho asked as they both tried to run after her.

“Why don’t we just leave her?” Lay asked.

Suho looked at Lay and shook his head.

“You know why. We can’t leave her until we find out what her real intentions are, and until we find the others,” Suho said.

Lay nodded once as they both ran after Aera.

Aera reached the opening and looked around. The sunlight was bright and the breeze was just perfect. It was a big open place, with trees here and there.

Finally, freedom, she thought to herself.

Freedom from being stuck in the forest too long with those two sassy men.

Aera spread out her arms and took in a deep breath and exhaled. She heard two pairs of hurried footsteps coming towards her.

“Dammit, don’t just go running off like that!” Suho yelled.

Aera rolled her eyes and turned to the left and began walking.

“Do you even know where you’re going?” Lay asked.

“No,” her voice was getting colder by the minute.

Lay looked at Suho and sighed.

“What’s her problem,” he mouthed.

Suho shrugged and walked after Aera. Lay rolled his eyes and jogged up to Suho, walking beside him.

Aera looked left and right. She stopped in her tracks and spread out her arms, as if embracing the wind. She closed her eyes and took in deep breath.

“Go south.”

It was the wind again. The wind was speaking to her. It confused Aera, but she felt like she could trust the wind. She opened her eyes and turned left.

“Let’s go south,” she said.

Lay and Suho looked at each other confused and shrugged their shoulders. They said nothing as they just continued to follow her.

~~~
It seem liked hours before they decided to take a rest. They were near a forest again. Aera rolled her eyes, but she was secretly happy that there were trees around them. Trees meant shade from the harsh sunlight. Aera plopped down under a tree and stared out at the open space.
What am I doing? I feel so lost right now.
She felt lost. Lost with her memories and lost with her life.
Lay and Suho were sitting under a tree a few feet away from her. They looked at Aera, and then exchanged glances.
“Does she even know where she’s going?” Lay asked.
“I don’t know. I’m not a mind reader,” Suho rolled his eyes.
Lay sighed and sprawled his arms and legs on the green earth beneath them.
“She has a bad attitude,” Lay said.
“Not as bad as yours,” Suho joked.
Lay rolled his eyes again.
“Whatever.”
Aera sighed and closed her eyes. She focused on the noises around her. The wind swayed and the leaves rustled.
SNAP.
Her eyes flew opened and she looked around cautiously. She looked at Suho and Lay, wondering if they heard it too. But, they were talking enthusiastically about something. Aera quietly and carefully stood up, without letting them know. She looked around her for some kind of weapon to protect her. She had no daggers or swords to fight with. She mentally cursed herself for not searching for one before she left the house. She found a rather long stick. She picked it up and propped the Box under her arm. She looked at Lay and Suho before walking away from them.
SNAP.
Aera turned her head to where the noise was coming from. She listened carefully before taking another step.
SNAP.
She walked deeper and deeper into the woods.
WOOSH.
Something flew past her. She turned around and held out the stick, protectively in front of her.
“Show yourself,” she said.
She heard a scoff.
“Who are you?” a deep voice asked.
“Show yourself, you coward,” Aera’s voice was deadly and angry.
“Who’s the one cowering behind a stick?” the voice laughed.
“Who are you?”
“You answer me first. Oh? Is that the Box? The one of legend?”
“What are you talking about?” Aera asked as she pushed the Box closer to her body.
“Are you the Seeker?”
Aera’s eyebrows furrowed in confusion.
“Seeker?” she asked.
She was now turning around in circles. She was still holding the stick out in front of her. Her eyes carefully scanned the area around her. The voice seemed to come at her in different directions, but in an orderly fashion.
The deep voice chuckled.
“How do you not know about the Seeker if you have the Box?” it sounded like the person talking to her was right next to her.
Aera swung the stick in her hand to the right.
“Show yourself!” she yelled.
The deep voice chuckled.
“What a fun little gir-”
Aera swung the stick in one large circle around her. She heard a grunt and smirked.
Found you.
She held the Box closely and to her as she swung the stick in the direction that the “invisible” person was.
Maybe invincibility is his power.
The person grunted again and fell the floor. Aera could tell because the pile of leaves in front of her were dented down into the earth. Aera suddenly felt the person kick her legs making her slam down onto the ground. She grunted and quickly stood up. She darted her eyes everywhere trying to find the smallest movement.
“You really are a coward! Are you too scared to show yourself and fight m-”
THUD.
Aera felt something hit the back of her head. Her vision blurred for a few seconds. She got angry and swung the stick again.
“COME OUT!” she screamed.
She could feel something wet drip onto her back. She touched the back of her head and looked at her hands.
Dammit, I’m bleeding.
She rolled her eyes and dropped the Box. She steady both of her hands on the long stick and put on leg out in front of her. She leaned forward in a crouching position and narrowed her eyes at her surroundings. She saw a swift movement at the corner of her eyes and swung towards that direction. She saw the actual person that she was fighting for a short few seconds. He was tall and muscular. He wore clothes that looked like rags. His arms were exposed, showing his tattoo that symbolized his ability on his bicep. He had dark brown hair and eyes that looked black. He was twice her size. He disappeared from Aera’s view once Aera brought her stick back to strike him again.
“What can you do with a stick, little girl?” he asked.
Aera knew exactly where he was. He was still in the same spot that he had showed himself. Well, maybe he didn’t show himself. He probably wasn’t even aware that she saw him for a few seconds.
“This,” Aera said before charging at him full speed with the stick pointed at him.
She could feel the stick enter his flesh. She winced when she felt the stick go further in him. But, she kept her composure. She had to be strong in order to kill her parent’s murderers. The man yelled and grabbed the stick. He appeared again. His invisibility trick wasn’t working at the moment. Aera smirked and pushed it further in him. She kept walking forwards until he hit a tree. She bore her eyes into his head. He stared at her. Fear filled both of his eyes.
“Who are you?” she asked in a deathly tone.
“P-Please,” blood trickled out of his mouth.
“Who are you!” she yelled.
Her eyes glowed with rage.
“I-I…”
He choked on the blood spilling out of his mouth.
“Give me your name,” Aera growled.
“Y-Yoonjae, Lee Yoonjae,” he was sobbing now, “P-Please l-let me-”
“HAN AERA!” two voices yelped out in horror.
Aera paid no attention to the two warriors behind her.
“Why do you want the Box?” she asked.
“I-I never said that I-”
“I know you do!” she pushed the stick farther into him.
“I-” he fainted on the stick.
Aera pulled the stick out of him and stared at him.
“Heal him, Lay,” Aera said before turning around, ignoring the two scared warriors.
Suho and Lay just stared at Aera walk away. They were terrified at the scene that they had just witness. Lay looked at the boy on the ground and ran over to him. He pulled the boy’s shirt up and placed his hand over the wound.
Aera bent down to pick up the Box. Her vision blurred. She reached up to the back of her head again and gently touched it. She looked at her hand. She was still bleeding. She suddenly felt someone grab onto her arm and swing her around.
“What the hell is wrong with you!” Suho yelled. “You don’t just go around killing innocent people!”
It’s not her! Suho thought. The seeker wouldn’t just go around hurting people like this.
Aera scoffed.
“Innocent? Killing? I told Lay to heal him. You know nothing, so don’t make any accusations,” Aera shot at him.
Suho clenched his fists and shook his head.
“You are worse than a beast,” he said.
Aera’s eyes watered, both from the insult and pain from her head.
Suho mentally smirked seeing her like this, but he was oblivious the wound on her head.
“You know nothing,” Aera whispered.
Her tears began to drop, but she made no effort to wipe them.
“Suho! Help!” Lay yelled.
Suho turned around and ran towards Lay. Aera turned back around and began wandering off into the woods. Her vision blurred and went back to normal. Her blood loss was great and the fact that it was a head injury wasn’t good. Aera could feel her many tears mix with her blood. She promised herself that she would stay strong, but how could she if there wasn’t even one person on her side? She stumbled on a branch and fell over. Her body was faced down. She closed her eyes, just wishing that she could die. But, then her parent’s cruel murder flashed before her eyes.
I can’t die yet.
She opened her eyes again. She clutched onto the Box, close to her body. She forced herself to sit-up. She leaned against a tree and tried to even out her breathing. She placed her hand on the ground for support. Her hand brushed against something soft, making her jump. She quickly looked down to see a hand. Her eyes widened as she looked at the arm that was attached to an arm and must’ve been attached to a body. She crawled on the leaf and dirt covered ground, not caring if she looked homeless at the moment. She moved the leaves around her away, revealing a boy.
She quickly searched for a necklace and found one. It was triangular shaped. She found the corresponding symbol on the Box and pushed the pendant in. Light emitted from the Box once again. Aera couldn’t take it anymore. She wanted to avenge her parent’s death, but she just felt so weak and tired. Her body gave out as she collapsed on the boy that was now awakening.
