The Roller Coaster That Is Life

Chapter 20: Memories

G-Dragon's POV

Jiyong was debating on rather or not he should go downstairs. He had wanted to sleep in, since it was his day off. But for some reason he had woken up, when he heard Nita in the bathroom early in the morning. Since then, he'd been up. He'd known when she came back, when she'd taken a shower, when she was done. It wasn't that she had disturbed him, he just couldn't go back to sleep.

The smell of something sweet had made its way upstairs and it smelled so good, he wanted to go down stairs and see what she was up too. He didn't know why he was being such a coward. That was a lie. He knew exactly why he was being a coward. Ever since her story of San Francisco, he'd been trying not to see the girl, he'd met in San Francisco.

He needed to stop pacing, otherwise he'd wear out the carpet. He made his way to his desk and sat down. He opened up his laptop and went into his pictures folders. Hunting for all the photos he'd taken while they'd been in San Francisco. As he scrolled through the pictures a flood of memories came back.

He came across a picture of the guys outside of the Ghirardelli ice cream shop, eating ice cream while making funny faces. He remembered Seungri was trying to be buddy-buddy with T.O.P and T.O.P had dipped his spoon in his sundae and smeared it on Seungri's face. Seungri's expression was priceless. The others were laughing at him and Jiyong had taken the picture. He laughed at the memory.

He scrolled further down and came to picture that showed him a glass wall with nothing but endless water miles ahead. He remembered that one, it was day he had gone to Fisherman's Wharf. The setting for that photo was the same, Nita had mentioned a couple of nights back. As he looked at the picture he noticed a person, standing there in the corner looking out at the water, with their hand on the glass. He could tell it was woman, she had long hair and was wearing a light pink top, while holding a gray jacket. As he sat there looking at the picture, he remember that the girl he'd met later that same day, also had a grey jacket.

He quickly scrolled down still looking for the picture of the girl. There! There it was. He double clicked on the picture to open it in a new window. That was her, he'd forgotten her name, but he would never forget her face. How could he, she was supposed to be the woman that he fell in love with. At least that's what the fortune he'd gotten said. The girl that had given him the change wasn't skinny or attractive. She was on the heavy side and she wasn't overly ugly, but she wasn't extremely pretty either. She seemed average. He remembered running after her as soon as he'd finished reading it. He'd wanted to know if what he had gotten would become true or not. Turned it out, it was telling him the truth.

He had taken the picture of her under the guise of checking his phone. She had told him she didn't like taking pictures. They had spent most of their time walking around the exhibit that afternoon. It was well past lunch time and as they had made another round her stomach had rumbled and his had followed suit.

"Now that I think about it, I am hungry. And from the sounds of it so are you," she said, eyeing his stomach.

"Yea, come to think of it, I'm hungry too. Know any good places around here," Jiyong asked.
Her eyes filled with excitement as a big smile broke her face.

"Have you tried the sourdough bread they make in San Francisco," she asked. Jiyong had heard of the bread but never tried it.

"I've heard of it, but never tried it," he answered.

"Then that's where we'll go, they have a bakery here, come on," she quickly made her way out of the building and Jiyong had followed suit.

"You go to this place a lot," Jiyong asked. He was curious about how she'd known where most things were. He was visiting for the first time and kept getting lost even with a map.

"My father loves the bread, so every time he came to San Fran he would talk about it when he got home. He would always bring the bread back home too," she smiled as she looked at him, then looking back to where they were going, "he would bring back three or four boxes."
Jiyong had been surprised to hear that. The jerk inside his head was using that as an excuse of why she was so heavy set. Of course he didn't say anything out loud.

They made their way into the restaurant, ordered their food and found a spot to sit down. It was a busy place, when one group got up from a table there was another one ready to occupy the empty spot. As Jiyong sat there his eyes wondered around, he looked up and saw a line of baskets moving along. Some of the baskets had loafs of bread in them while some were empty, it was fun to watch the conveyor belt move along.

"So . . . . .what brings you to San Fran," she asked taking his attention off the conveyor.

"The company I'm going to be working for wanted us to finish some training here," Jiyong answered, not going into too much detail. He wasn't sure he wanted her know who he was. She was a stranger after all, he wasn't naïve.

"Wow, you're training for a job at a company," she sounded awed. Jiyong didn't understand why. It was common for new trainees to learn English, after all they were going to be big stars.

Curious as to why, he asked, "why do you sound surprised?"

"You seemed very put together. You and I seem the same age and you already know what you're doing, the same can't be said for me," she answered. Jiyong hadn't thought about that.
He knew he was a trainee for a band that still had a couple of years to debut, she didn't know that.

"It's not as epic as it sounds," Jiyong explained. As he watched her, he could see she was confused, so he tried to clarify. "What I mean is, the company I'm here training for is an entertainment company. I'm training to become a singer."

Understanding flickered across her face, "So you still have some time before you come out with an album. But that doesn't change the fact that your passionate about what you love doing," she answered.

Once again Jiyong was surprised by her response. What had he done to give her the impression of being passionate about his work? Not that he wasn't. The confusion must have shown on his face.

"I say that because, what kind of person leaves their home to go overseas for training," she said.

A bit offended he asked, "What makes you think, I'm a foreigner?"

She smiled at him, "You have an accent when you speak English. Sometime when you talk it sounds as if words are put together and you looked completely lost, even when you were following me. Then there's the fact that you looked like a child walking into this restaurant because you were completely awestruck by the conveyer," she finished pointing up at the ceiling.

"I wasn't trying to be offensive," she said, "I just tend to pick up things quickly, a side effect of my father's business," she finished, looking down as she'd said the last part.

"What does he do," Jiyong asked, curious about what had caused that reaction.

"He's a business man. . . . . . .umm. . . . . . . .he's in. . . . . . . .export and import. . . . .," she hesitantly answered. Jiyong wasn't sure if he was making her uncomfortable or the question he'd ask was.

"That's cool, so he wants you to work with him," Jiyong asked.

"You could say that, but my mother wants one of my brothers to take over," she answered.

"What do you want to do," he asked. She looked up at him, surprise clearly written on her face.

"No one's ever asked me what I wanted," she said, "but since you asked I'll answer," she began fiddling with her fingers.

"I think I would like to manage my father's business, I'm good at taking care of people, and everyone that knows my father knows me. I've met most of his clients too," as she told him her answer, she was developing a glow, it was liking watching the sunrise. Everything slowly started brightening, Jiyong smiled he was glad he'd asked the question.

"What made you want to become a musician," she asked, looking at him all bright eyed.

"Music is life for me, I don't know what I'd do if there was no music," he answered.

"I see, it's a part of you. Passion like that is hard to find," she said smiling.

That expression and those words had been his undoing. He was having a hard time doubting the fortune at the moment. Despite her looks, her understanding and the way she crafted her words stole a piece of him.

He leaned back in his chair still looking at her picture. He wondered if she still remembered him or not. It was weird how he always paired Nita and his San Fran girl together. Both of them had a way of understanding anyone's situation, they both tried to look at all sides, but they always hold firm to their choices.

Okay he was done just smelling the sweet stuff. He got up and made his way downstairs.
Looking towards the counters while he made his way to the kitchen, he could see an assortment of baking utensils. Nita was putting white icing into triangle shaped bag, she was finishing up with that bag and started on a bag with another color.

"What's the occasion," he asked, not sure if she was celebrating something or had just decided she wanted to bake a cake. Well, he wasn't sure what she was making, but he hoped it was a cake.

"Nothing, it was a request," Nita answered. Who made a request for cake? Siwon? Seungri? One of the others? He wondered if it was that over-worked-out-flirt Guk Yong Bang.

"For," he asked, not sure if his voice was going to work properly with thoughts of Guk Yong Bang making requests of her.

"The kids at Safe House," she answered, a smile forming on her face as she set the filled bags of icing aside. What was Safe House? Whatever it was, he had the day off too. And Sangnim did say they needed to spend time with her. That's not what he meant and you know it, said a voice in his head.

"You have the day off, right," he asked, hoping she would invite him to come with her.

"Hmmm," she replied. That didn't work. Be direct, Jiyong, be direct.

"You mind if I come with you," he asked, holding his breath, while fake drinking water.

"Sure, no problem. I still have a lot to do while the cake is cooling. I'll call for you when I'm ready to go," she said. Jiyong wasn't sure if she was kicking him out or just saying that. He decided to chill in the living room, in case she called for him.

As he made his way to sofa he heard the clicking of the door opening. He didn't think any of the others were due back so soon. He stretched his neck to see who it was. He wasn't surprised when he saw Siwon walking towards the kitchen. Jiyong quickly acted like he was looking for something, when Siwon's gaze came his way. Nodding at him as he single handed a wave at him. Jiyong turned on the TV but wasn't paying attention to what was coming on the screen. He strained his ears to hear the conversation in the kitchen without looking to obvious.

After about ten minutes, he was making his way back to the kitchen. His curiosity killing him about what was going on in the kitchen.

"You mind if I come," Siwon was asking, as Jiyong made his way back into the kitchen.

"Come where," he asked, he was hoping it wasn't to Safe House. He wanted to spend time with Nita with just the two of them.

"Safe House," Nita answered. Jiyong wanted to cringe, yet again it was the three of them, as appose to the two of them. Something was better than nothing, he thought.

Jiyong couldn't help glaring at Siwon. Why was it, that every time he got the chance to spend some time with Nita he was always ready to tag along. Didn't he ever work on one of her days off.

"You sure, either one of you should come," Nita asked, her focus solely on the cake, but it looked like she was thinking about other things while working.

"Why," he and Siwon asked.

"You're famous, should you be visiting help facilities without your company's approval," she asked. Jiyong didn't really think about that. Sangnim had said to get to know her work ethic. He figured he could use that excuse. But why was she worrying about that, shouldn't Siwon be worried about his own issues.

"I don't think Sangnim would mind," Jiyong answered, looking at Siwon, daring him to argue and waiting for Siwon to confirm he didn't have any issues.

"It's fine. I'm sure it shouldn't be a problem. Plus security at Safe House is top notch. So even if someone saw you walk in, they wouldn't be able to come in," she said.

Jiyong was disappointed. Just when he'd had the chance to show up Siwon, Nita had snagged the rug out and ruined all the fun.

"If security is top notch, how did you get in," Siwon asked. Jiyong paused for a second. That's a good question, how did she get in?

"I ran into one of the kids who had wandered out," she answered quickly. Jiyong found that a bit suspicious.

"We're both coming with you," Siwon said. Jiyong didn't know about Siwon, but he was going to go with her regardless of his announcement.

Jiyong looked at Nita, the entire time during their conversation she never lost her focus on the cake. Jiyong could have been standing there in his birthday suit and she wouldn't have lost her focus. He watched as she continued decorating the cake. She was working on the bottom edge of the cake. It looked professionally done. The white icing covering the cake was even and flawless. You couldn't see one mark from the spatula she used. Her hands were steady as she decorated the bottom with pick icing.

"Did you take cake decorating classes or something," he asked watching her. He couldn't help thinking she'd make one hell of an Amma. She cooked well, cleaned, and she was excellent at decorating baked goods. Jiyong was surprised by the thought.

A realization hit him. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

He LIKED her more than mere attraction!!!!

"Nope, trial and error. You should have seen the very first cake I made. It ended up tipping to one side," she answered. She smiling from eye to eye, Jiyong wondered what she was thinking about. She looked beautiful. As she decorated the cake, a couple of strands of hair came loose.
She used the back of her hand to shove them behind her ear, getting a bit of icing near her eyebrow. Jiyong wanted so badly to lick it way, but since they had an audience he decided against it. He grabbed a napkin and wiped it away. She seemed so focused on her task, she didn't even notice.

"You're saying you learned on your own," Siwon asked, breaking Jiyong out of his thoughts. The guy never stopped talking.

"Yea, I guess you could say that. It was mostly trial and error, every once in a while I used YouTube videos to learn new things," she answered, while decorating the top of the cake. As soon as she finished, she lifted the cake, giving it a once over, then she slowly turned it, checking it out again. Once she placed it back on the table, she checked the front and smiled again. Jiyong could see the pride of a job well done.

"There, all done. Now I just have to get ready," she said as she quickly cleaned up. It didn't take long since all she had to do was put away the bags of icing. She pretty much had everything cleaned before she started decorating. "Just give me a couple of minutes to change and we can head out," she said, placing the cake in a big container and putting a lid on it.

As soon as the lid clicked in place she bounded upstairs to get changed. Now, it was only Jiyong and Siwon in the kitchen. It was kind of awkward. Jiyong couldn't help but laugh.

"What's so funny," Siwon asked him.

"This," Jiyong gestured between the two, "somehow we always end up spending time with her together, and then she leaves and we never really talk." Jiyong wanted to lay things out straight. He didn't feel the need to lie.

"We don't talk to each other because we like the same woman," Siwon answered, "competitors are always friendly on the battlefield."

"Wait. . . .I wasn't. . . . . .so you do like her," Jiyong said, in the back of his mind he had already known that.

"There was never a doubt about that," Siwon said.

"So all's fair," Jiyong asked.

"There no questioning that," Siwon answered smirking. Well if the hammer hadn't been dropped, it was now. Nita choose that moment to come back.

"Kaja, we don't have very far to go," she said grabbing the container with the cake in it, while managing her bag.

"Who are you riding with," G asked, hoping she would go with him.

"I usually just walk," she said. Walk, okay. How far was the place?

"Why don't we all just walk then," Siwon suggested, making it to Nita before Jiyong could, to help her with the things she was caring.

"Thanks, but it's almost 4 miles," she said, sounding like she doubted both of them could make the trip by foot. She wasn't wrong, Jiyong wasn't sure if he could.

"We can take my car then," Siwon said, he began searching his pockets for his car keys.
Trying to juggle Nita's bag and the cake container at the same time. Jiyong would have enjoyed watching the show if he'd dropped the box, but then worried about all the hard work she put into the cake.

"I'll just take that, I don't want you to ruin all my hard work," Nita said, voicing Jiyong's thought. Sometimes he wondered how they both thought the same thing. He wondered if Siwon had moments like those with her.

"Kaja, I don't want to keep the kids waiting," she said heading out the door, looking this way and that, so she didn't trip or ruin the gift for her kids.

Jiyong wondered what the day was going to show him today
