The Ring

I sigh as I walk away, glancing behind me at him. He looks at the ring in his hand, makes an angry face, and throws it into the air walking the opposite direction from where I was going. I turn back around and keep walking, even though the shard of glass that was lodged in my heart was being pushed deeper every time I shoved him away. Going home, I pull out my journal, picking up my pen, and write today's letter to him.

So I guess you hate me now, right? I gave you back your promise ring, and left. I saw you throw it into the air, not caring where it landed, but I guess that's to be expected after your heart was broken. You know by now that I didn't want to. I'm already dying anyway, considering I have heart disease. You know by the statistics that I've written in here, that the percentage of me surviving this surgery, is lower than five percent. But I guess you don't know it right now, because I haven't told you. What would you do if I told you all of this? Would you stay by my side, or would you leave me, already knowing that I'd be leaving you? I guess I'm doing you a favor, by not telling you. I'm going to America tonight to get the surgery, you don't know that yet though. You just think that you were dumped by a girl that you thought actually loved you. But I do love you. I love you a thousand times over, and even when I'm dead, I'll love you even more. Please don't hate yourself if I don't come back to Korea, and if I do, you'll have already read this diary to know why I did this. If I ever do come back, do you think you could forgive me? If you can't, do you think you could forget me? I guess not, but right now, I'm going out to find the ring that you threw god knows where, and I'll put it on the necklace you gave me for my birthday last month. We might not see each other for a year or so, but if you ever do forgive me, I'll be wearing that necklace until I'm old and dying.
I love you.
I sign it and go back out into the spot in the forest where we'd met earlier. I stand in the spot that he'd been standing and I look around, something catches my eye up in the tree next to me. I look up and see it hanging from a branch a few feet higher than me. Climbing the tree, I get new cuts and bruises, my hands were rubbed until they cracked open, smearing my blood over the tree as I slid along the branch, reaching my hand out to get the ring. I snatch it from the branch and scoot back quickly, making sure that the branch I was on wasn't going to break. I jump down to the ground and smile, looking at the ring in my hands. He'd had our names engraved on the inside and on the outside, it had a rainbow like stone set in it. I hang it on my necklace and go out to the jewelry store, looking for my last present to him this year. A single earring catches my eye, and I go over to it. "These earrings are unique, there is only one in the whole world and it's right here." The clerk says as I look at it. Instead of it being diamond, it was half of this metallic gem and half of the rainbow like gem that was set into my ring. "I'll take this," I say and hand him the money. He wraps it up and I go home, putting my diary and the present into a box, mailing it to him. I grab my suitcase and eomma calls a taxi. We go through security at the airport and I start to cry, realizing that I might not be forgiven for lying to him. Eomma sits next to me, shushing and patting my back.
*A Year And A Half Later*
I step through the exit gate and grin, my eyes dancing around the airport. I was finally back in Seoul. Home, I sigh and suddenly a group of girls push past me, running down to another gate. One of them had dropped their fan in the hurry to get there faster, and I pick it up, reading it. Exo came back from China today, that’s right. Tossing the fan into the trash can, I grab my suitcase and walk out to the front, waiting for mom to pick me up. Exo's white van pulls up a few feet away from me and I ignore it, pulling my hair up in the warm summer sun. I'd forgotten what Seoul air was like. I wince as I hear girls screaming behind me, security pushes me over about an inch and just stands there in case I was going to go running and attack any of Exo. I sigh, reaching to the base of my throat, holding up the ring hanging from the chain and watching the gemstone sparkle and shine. I see out of the corner of my eye that Exo was already climbing into their van, I turn my head a little and catch sight of the half and half earring that I'd given him. I smile, he was still wearing it even though he didn't know where I was. Kai sees me and I quickly turn away, staring at my ring. Mom pulls up in front of me and I put my suitcase in the trunk and get in the front. "My baby girl, how have you been? I saw you a couple of months ago, but I'm still asking!" Eomma says ruffling my almost shoulder length hair. She pulls out in front of EXO's van and a few seconds later, I watch their van pull out. "What's going on back there? Something interesting?" She goes to look behind us and I say "Look in front of you, you might run someone over." She sticks out her tongue and asks "So did you meet any cute guys in the past few months?" I stare at her like she's crazy. "What? Did you get me any presents?" She asks and I grin, nodding. "You know what I picked up from America that I didn't have here?" I ask her and she glances at me, curious. "An attitude and another language I can swear in." She swats me and we pull up to our old house. I get out, stretching in the sunlight. I look to my left and decide to go into the woods later, before mom grabs my arm and pulls me into the house. "I have all the stuff you wanted me to get in your room, and all of your things are packed up in our guest room. All you have to do is unpack when you're ready." She says and leaves me to my room. Going inside, mom had completely taken everything out and the paint and brushes were ready for me to paint. Grinning, I change into jeans and a tank top, peeling off my socks and grabbing a paintbrush. I start painting and I run out of red and blue. "Eomma! I'm going to go out and get some more paint!" I call, grabbing her credit card and the paint cards before slipping my feet into my worn shoes and slamming the door behind me. Putting the cards into my pocket, I go into the forest and reach the tree. It'd gotten bigger, but I'd never forget what happened here. I put my hand on the trunk and quickly pull it back, realizing that something had cut me, my blood was imprinted on the bark again. I sigh, I really needed to stop hurting myself with these harmless things. Going back out to the street, I pull my hair up into a small ponytail, because there was only enough hair for a small one. Walking down the sidewalk, I stare around the neighborhood waving at the neighbors that I'd remembered from when I lived here. They wave back, remembering who I am and I grin. I knock on the Choi family's door and a fifteen year old girl answers the door. "Who are you?" She asks and I ask for her mom. Ms. Choi comes to see who's at the door and she shrieks loud enough for her daughter to cover her ears, wincing. "Ah-ri ah!" She pulls me into a humongous hug and I laugh, patting her back. "I didn't know if you were coming back!" She wails and I smile. "Wait, you're Ah-ri?" The fifteen year old girl asks and I nod, knowing full well that she was Ms. Choi's daughter Sun Ha. "But Ah-ri didn't laugh this much, and wasn’t this confident!” She says and I look at her. "You're really carefree now, you used to be so depressing, and now you're all happy!" I grin and nod. "I have to go buy some more paint for my room, I'll stop over later to catch up, okay?" I ask Ms. Choi and she nods enthusiastically, letting me go. I go down to the hardware store and get the paint. Walking back, the old neighborhood bullies, Soo In and Ah Neul stop me, putting their hands on their hips. "Can I help you?" "So you lived huh?" Soo In looks at me like I'm some disgusting creature. I put the same thing on my face and look at her back. "No shit." "You'd better not go back to oppa, he was destroyed when you left." I put the paint down and start laughing like crazy. She didn't even know why he was destroyed. I didn't either, but it was either because I left him, or he had read my diary. "What's so funny? You think he still loves you?" Ah Neul snarls and I look up at them, and then burst out laughing again. "What is wrong with you? After that surgery, did you become retarded?" Soo In looks at me with a weird face. I stand up straight, looking at her. "What's funny is that you're still calling him oppa when he's a year and a half younger than you! Plus you don't know why he was destroyed and will probably never know anyways. And if he still loves me, that just means he's forgiven me. If he doesn't, then I hope he's forgotten about me." Then I think about the last thing she'd said and double over laughing again. "Plus, I got a heart surgery, not a brain surgery. Only brain surgeries can make you retarded, and by the way, are you still the whore you were back in high school?" I ask and pick up my paint, walking past them. I hear Ah Neul snicker and Soo In's heels are suddenly clacking on the pavement towards me. I spin around, pretending I'd forgotten something and hit her straight in her plastic surgery nose with the paint can. I put my hands to my mouth in fake worry, "Oh my god, I'm so sorry, I forgot something at the store and you were standing right behind me!" I turn back towards my house and walk the rest of the way, slamming the door behind me.
Sehun
Exo had finally arrived at the airport and the screaming girls wasn't helping my mood. We were led out to the van and I climbed in right away, trying to get some peace and quiet. Kai was the last one to get in and I watch him stand there staring to his right. I grab him and pull him in next to me and Lay closes the door. "I could've sworn that I just saw her." Kai stares out of the front and quickly points, making me look. A girl with almost shoulder length hair stood there, holding her necklace out to see it in the sun. "So what?" I shrug and Kai says "Look at the necklace closely!" I look back and see a ring sparkling in the sun. She drops it and it rests at the base of her throat as she goes to the back of a car, opening the trunk and hefting her suitcase into it. She turns around and looks up at the sky and I gasp, lurching back. It was Ah-ri, she'd cut her hair short but I could clearly see the scar from her surgery peeking out from under her shirt. Her hand unconsciously reaches to the ring and she climbs into the car. She was finally back. She'd survived the surgery and she'd come back. The car in front of us pulls out and manager pulls out after them. "She's back," Kai says, patting my back and Baekhyun asks who. "His old girlfriend. They really loved each other, and when he gave her a promise ring, she gave it back, which meant that she broke up with him. But then the next day, Sehun got a box from her in the mail and when we opened it, there was a diary and a small box. We opened the small box and we found the earring that he's wearing in his right ear in it. We'd opened the diary and read through it. Apparently his girlfriend, Ah-ri had a heart problem that would cause her health to deteriorate if she didn’t get surgery soon. The percentage of surviving the surgery was under five percent, so Ah-ri, to be safe, didn't tell him and instead broke it off, hoping he'd understand when he read it. At the end of it, she'd apparently gone out to the forest where she'd rejected him and retrieved the ring from the woods and said she'd keep it on the necklace he had gotten her for her birthday." He looks at me and I look out the window as the manager drives. "Naturally, he went out to the forest and on the tree next to where he'd stood had blood stains on it. He'd gone to her house but remembered that she had left the night before." Baekhyun looks at me and then I'm surrounded by all of them trying to hug me. "Ya! Get off!" I say and they sit back down, pouting. We reached the house we were renting and we went in. "Let's sit outside!" D.O says and pulls me out to the porch, making me sit there and watch whatever was going on. A paint covered girl walks down the sidewalk to our right and is stopped by Soo In and Ah Neul, the two girls from my high school. From here, we can hear them clearly. "Can I help you?" The paint girl asks and Soo In smirks "So you lived huh?" "No shit." Paint girl replies. "You'd better not go back to oppa, he was destroyed when you left." Soo In says and I realize she's talking to Ah-ri, who starts laughing at that sentence, putting down the paint cans. "What's so funny? You think he still loves you?" Ah Neul asks. I lean forward, a little curious about what Ah-ri is going to say, but she just keeps laughing. "What is wrong with you? After that surgery, did you become retarded?" Soo In backs up a little bit. Ah-ri stands up and stops laughing, looking at Soo In with cold eyes that I've never seen. "What's funny is that you're still calling him oppa when he's a year and a half younger than you! Plus you don't know why he was destroyed and will probably never know anyways. And if he still loves me, that just means he's forgiven me. If he doesn't, then I hope he's forgotten about me." I smile, happy that she still knows me well enough to say those things. But then Ah-ri starts laughing again and I look at her again. "Plus, I got a heart surgery, not a brain surgery. Only brain surgeries can make you retarded, and by the way, are you still the whore you were back in high school?" She wonders aloud and picks up her paint cans, walking away from Soo In and Ah Neul. I see Ah Neul laugh at that but is smacked on the back of the head. Soo In's face is pure ugly and she starts to stalk towards Ah-ri. I'm about to get up when Kai makes me sit, "It's about to get interesting. Just watch, Ah-ri might be different." I watch and Ah-ri pauses, noticing that Soo In was following her and she suddenly turns around, her hands swinging out and one of the paint cans hits Soo In's nose that was fixed by plastic surgery. I hear the guys in the house howling in laughter and I'm laughing too. Who knew that Ah-ri had fight in her? She was always so sad back then. But I guess it's different now that she knows that she's going to live. She walks away and goes to the house next to us, slamming the door. I'm doubled over laughing at how great Ah-ri was when she insulted Soo In. I watch the two girls stalk off and Kai says "Hey, look." He points to our left, at the second floor and I run to the railing. Ah-ri was in the room facing us and her two windows were open as she danced around with her paint brush. A hand is waved in front of my face and I turn to see Chanyeol smiling at me. "I bet you miss her, but don't skip dinner." Nodding, I throw one last glance at her before going in and grabbing a plate of Chow Mein.
