Slaughter House

Chapter 3

“Mom? Dad? What are you thinking! I’ve told you both countless times that everyone but the professor are the worst people I’ve ever encountered. Why did you accept that I go with them to this unknown place? Would you seriously let your daughter go into the unknown like that?”

No sound came out of their mouths, though I knew they were talking. They just kept staring at me intensely, saying something I couldn’t hear.

“We talked about this before! Why didn’t you tell him something?” I continued asking them. They just stared. “What’s wrong? Do I have something on my face? Why are you looking at me like that? Talk to me!” They both pointed to a mirror robotically as I observed their unusual behavior. I walked towards the mirror they were pointing at.

What I saw astounded me. My face… my face wasn’t normal. It had the same shape and characteristics, but it wasn’t flesh covered by skin anymore. It looked more like porcelain… like china. I had turned into china!

--
I woke up to Yoogeun shaking me lightly from my slumber. He looked at me and I could see a tinge of worry in his eyes.
“What’s wrong? Did I start sleep-talking or something?” He simply shook his head.

“We’re here,” he said. I looked out the window and saw that the sun had gone down. The sky was colored a mix of deep blue and purple. Everyone on the bus was already on their feet, ready to get out at any moment.

“Um, how long have I been asleep…?” I asked my seat partner.

“Believe it or not, you’ve been asleep for over 5 hours,” he replied. I lazily stood up from the seat like everyone else using the seat in front of me for support. I let Yoogeun pass before going out last. Lastly, professor Daewon checked if we had forgotten anything.

I looked around me. We were in the middle of nowhere. Literally. And I was not the only one to think so. The only things in my vision was grass and trees in the distance. The ground made a slight saddle between the small hills but it wasn’t very noticeable. Where exactly were we…?

“Professor, where are we?” asked Shinhye.

“This is China Senadale…” Daewon said, looking around as if proud of himself for some reason. I’m suddenly calling him by his name, but I’m going to be in trouble if I call him that out loud.

“Looks more like a savannah,” mocked Hyuntae looking around with disgust plastered on his face. I didn’t like Hyuntae at all. He was a bastard and a man whore.

I rubbed my eyes with my palm to clear my vision a little. I was still sleepy, but we had started walking around together as we weren’t allowed to get separated from each other.

“Isn’t anyone going to come pick us up?” Yoogeun asked.

“No, we are going to walk until there,” was his response from the professor.

“But isn’t he rich or something?” Shinhye whined as she flipped her hair back. “He should have enough dough to send us a car or something.” How ‘bout I put your perfect little ass in a car and send it down a cliff?

“Don’t worry, baby. Let’s just enjoy the place and our time here,” cooed Hyuntae. She cooed back and soon enough, they were rubbing on each other and making disgusting high pitched noises at each other.
“Alright, just because I give you more freedom than other teachers doesn’t mean I will allow you to pollute my hearing and sight with that,” stated Daewon.

“Sorry, professor,” they both teasingly apologized.

We followed our professor’s lead into the field for half an hour until we reached what looked like a cottage. It was high-class and almost entirely made of glass. I’ll take back what I said about it being a cottage. It was more like a small glass mansion. I was more happy that none of the idiots around me bothered me on our way here.

I took out my phone to call my parents to tell them that I had arrived safely. I dialed my home number, but as soon as I heard three rings, the connection cut. “Professor, my network is going batty,” I said, earning me a laugh from the morons. “What’s so funny, bimbos?” I straightforwardly retorted causing the girls to gasp in shock and Sanghoon to snicker. I glared at the latter.

“Bohee, calm down now. Students, don’t make fun of other people’s way of talking. Honestly, one would think I’m accompanying a kindergarten class…” the professor said, pinching the bridge of his nose with his index and thumb. “Now what’s wrong with your network, Bohee?”

“I can’t seem to call my parents,” I complained.

“I don’t think he has network towers for those cell phones you kids use, only landline. I’m sorry, Bohee, but it seems like you can only call from inside the building.” And with that, he started walking the few meters separating us and the glass building. While walking, I heard those morons whispering.

“Can you believe she just called us bimbos…?” Mina told Sanghoon.

“Don’t listen to her, you’re not a bimbo. She’s just jealous of my baby,” he comforted her.

“I’m going to give her the lesson of her life when we get back,” she threatened. Oh, how I wished I could simply turn around and give her a punch in the nose and him a kick in the shin, and get away with it. We ended up in front of the house quickly.

“Is the owner going to come meet us, seeing we passed?” asked Boyeong.

“He should…” her boyfriend Dongjoo added. As if he even wanted to see his face. Unless he was some creepy pedophile or pervert.

“No, children, he won’t. He is a bit busy at the moment so he will be seeing you when we depart tomorrow morning,” answered professor Daewon. I looked up at the building standing in front us. I couldn’t see what was inside because of the one-way glass, maintaining the person’s privacy.

Dongjoo looked at himself in the mirror and fixed his hair. “Does this place have a receptionist?” he asked.

“No, and quit admiring yourself.” Daewon opened the front door.

“Are we allowed to just get in like that?” Yoogeun asked as he entered the house.

“Yes. The owner has allowed me to do so for the day.”

This was a bit odd… “Who is the owner and how are you both related?” I asked as I entered as well.

“The owner was supposed to be Lord Dermont’s adopted son, but he had mysteriously disappeared a couple of months ago, meaning Dermont has taken over the ownership and takes care of the place… He suffered a big loss. We were friends back in my college days.”

“Not such a big loss compared to his money,” Sanghoon remarked. You’re saying it as if you’ve never seen money. In fact, that might be the case. Or else, you never would’ve chosen to date Ms Plastic. I wish I could’ve said that.

The professor looked at me. “Go see if there’s any phone at the booth,” he told me and I walked towards the direction he pointed.

I took a right turn and saw 5 phone booths. Each of them needed a quarter to be used and coincidentally, I had a good amount of them. I took one and pushed it into the slot, and dialed the number. It rang three times and then someone picked up. “Hello? Mom? Dad? It’s me, Bohee. I’ve arrived safely… hello? Is anybody there…?” The other side couldn’t be heard except for scratching and static. I couldn’t hear anything remotely close to a voice. “Hello? Hello? Mom? Dad? Hello? Can anyone hear me?” And the line got cut.

I went back to the others and when I arrived, professor Daewon asked me whether I could talk to my parents or not.

“The network is very undependable here…” I remarked.

“Don’t worry. I’m sure you can tell them what happened when we get back and they’ll understand,” Daewon said as he took out a few keys from his pocket. He handed each of us. They had plates on them with our room’s number on them. “Now go freshen up and get dressed. We’ll be having dinner soon.”

Hyuntae looked around. “Who’s going to bring us the food?” he asked.

“Oh, don’t worry. They have service here, they just like to keep it a little more private,” answered the professor before we all went to the rooms indicated on the numbered plates on our keys.
