A change of heart

Chapter 3

Hyunae’s POV
A lot has happened in a weeks time. I finally gave Sehun his book back, but he still won’t talk to me. I’ve gotten really close with Cho and Sojin and their friends Haneul and Miyon. I’ve also gotten really close with Got7, seeing as how they are in my house and most of them are in my homeroom. Me being friends with Got7 has sparked some...hate towards me. Some girls death glare me because they aren’t friends with Got7 no matter how hard they try, yet on the first day of school Yugyeom showed me around, or that’s what Cho said.

“I’ll be competing against you!” Cho says jokingly as she points at me. “House number 3 will win the athletics carnival this year!” she giggles. “Did you sign up to any events?” I nod. “Just all the running events. What about you?” I smile. “I’m going to participate in all the events.” She smiles brightly. Wow, Cho is beautiful, nice, smart and sporty. How perfect can she get? The siren sounds and the sports teacher’s voice comes on the speaker; “16 girls 100 metre sprint. 16 girls 100 metre sprint. Start lining up.” So Cho and I make our way to the starting line. Our names are called out for the first heat, two girls from House 1, two from House 2 and two from House 3. Cho is standing on my left. “Good luck.” She says with a smile. “But you’ll come second because I will win.” She pokes her tongue out. “We’ll see about that.” I say. I may not look like it, but I’m a really fast runner. I can sprint and do marathons...but that is the only type of sport I can do. We go into our starting positions. “Ready. Set. Go!” The buzzer sounds and I push off. The audience watching goes wild as I speed through the other girls. I cross the finish line and easily catch my breath. “Woah, you’re fast.” Cho says surprised. Yugyeom appears out of nowhere and grabs me from behind. “You were so fast!” He says as I try to squirm out of his grasp. “Yeah, thanks.” I laugh. He holds a water bottle in his hand and I am dying for a drink. “Hey, can I have some water?” I ask.

Yugyeom’s POV
“Hey, can I have some water?” Hyunae asks. I stiffen, but why? She just wants some water. “Hello~?” she calls. I look at her. “Can I have some?” I look at the bottle in my hand. “Y-Yeah.” I say while handing it to her. She gracefully unscrews the lip and gently puts the bottle against her lips. Against her lips. Against her lips! That’s an indirect kiss! I feel my face get hot and I turn away from her, pretending to look at the cheering audience who is screaming and shouting at the second heat of girls sprinting down the track. Why am I fussing over an indirect kiss? Calm down Yugyeom...calm down. Indirect kisses mean nothing...It’s the real kisses that count. I suddenly imagine us kissing, how her lips would pucker and how I’d slowly and romantically lean into her and – “Thank you for the water.” Hyunae says, shoving the water bottle at my back. I turn around and take it without saying anything. We just indirectly kissed. The siren wails the next announcement is made, “16 boys 100 metre sprint. 16 boys 100 metre sprint. Start lining up.” This is my chance to show off to Hyunae. “Hey,” I say, trying to sound cool. “Watch me beat all the other guys in the race.” I wink at her, hoping that I look charming. She smiles and giggles. “Good luck, Yugyeom.” My heart skips a beat. “O-OK.” I say and stagger off to the starting line. “Gook luck, Yugyeom.” My head replays her words. I’ll definitely win now! “Good luck, Yugyeom.” The smile from my face doesn’t disappear, until I notice that Jungkook from House 3 is in the same heat as I am. Jeon Jungkook is the guy everyone wants to be; smart, good looking, sporty, good with the girls. How am I meant to come first in the race if Jungkook is competing against me? “Good luck, Yugyeom.” I’ll just have to try my best. Jinyoung stands next to me, “You OK, bro?” he asks. “Yeah, yeah. I can totally win this race.” I say. He shrugs and nods towards Jungkook who is stretching his legs. “I can’t win can I?” I ask. “No one can win against Jungkook.” Jinyoung confirms. We get into our starting positions. “Ready. Set. Go!” The crowd goes wild and my lungs burn fiercely, but I can already see Jungkook inching forward. His feet are like lightning and they strike the floor hard and fast and send him flying towards the finish line... “It’s OK. You came fourth.” Hyunae says as she pats my head. I pout. Fourth isn’t going to impress her, she came first in HER race. “Fourth out of six people.” I say. Of course Jungkook came first, Chanyeol from House 1 came second, Jinyoung came third and I got stinking fourth. “The guy who came first is so fast.” Hyunae says dreamily. Oh no, is she attracted to Jungkook? She can’t be, she needs to be attracted to me. Hold up... I backtrack my thoughts. Did I just say that she needs to be attracted to me? I laugh. She doesn’t need to be attracted to anyone. “He’s Jeon Jungkook from BTS.” Cho says. “Isn’t he cool? A lot of people want to either be with or be him.” Jinyoung walks up to her and they hug; “Good on you babe. Third place.” She smiles. At least third is in top 3 winning places, fourth is like the reject place. I can’t impress Hyunae like this.

Hyunae also comes first in her 200 metre race. Woah, she is awesome. “Do you have your water bottle with you? Or my water bottle?” She asks desperately. “Someone stole my bottle.” I say grumpily. “It was right next to me then it disappeared.” Hyunae pants heavily. “I-Is something the matter?” I ask, getting concerned. “No.” She breathes. “Just. Need. Water.” “Let’s go get your water bottle.” I say, worry evident in my tone. I help Hyunae to back to here the audience sits so she can access her backpack with her water bottle inside. She looks so tired and weak, it feels like she can collapse any moment.

Hyunae comes second in her 400 metre race, but when we come back to get water, her bottle is gone. “Are you serious?” she pants. “Who is going around stealing water bottles?”

Hyunae’s POV
I take off my shoes and socks. This is why I hate long jump. Not only do I suck at is but the sand gets into every nook and cranny of my foot and its gross. Miyon, who is also in House 2 only participates in jumping events but she sprained her ankle in the high jump and now I have to fill in her for. I stagger to my left and lean on Yugyeom as everything turns white. “Are you OK?” He asks, catching me. “Yeah...yeah...” I say, shaking the dizzy feeling out of my head, but the dizziness only gets worse and the world spins nauseatingly. “You don’t look OK. Hyunae, you’re really pale. You should go to the first aid room.” Yugyeom’s eyebrows knot together in worry. “Yeah, I’m fine.” I say, blinking multiple times. “I just have this hereditary thing where my body loses water easily when I exercise so I need to keep hydrated. But since there is a bottle thief here, I can’t really do that.” “That sounds serious...” Yugyeom supports me by putting his arm around my shoulder. “I think you should go to the first aid room.” The siren wails and the sport teacher speaks on the speaker; “16 marathon runners, all 16 year old marathon runners line up now.” Yugyeom looks at me with worry in his eyes. “This is the last event.” I assure him. “Let’s win it, then I’ll visit the first aid room.” I pant. He nods uneasily. I slip my shoes back on and we walk to the starting line.
