A change of heart

My next class is Biology. I don’t have anyone I know in this class so I sit in the corner of the back row. A poker face guy with earphones in his ears sits next to me and doesn’t say anything. He scares me. The teacher tells us to read the textbook, but I didn’t bring mine on the first day. I slightly lean towards the poker face guy and awkwardly peek at the words on the textbook. He notices, rips the earphones from his ears and shoves the textbook closer to me. “Here.” He says bluntly. “Oh, thank you.” I say. So we share the textbook between us. When I finish the page, I reach over to turn it but he does at the same time and our hands touch. The boy’s face goes red and he quickly pulls his hand away. He pushes the book closer to me. “Have it. I don’t need it anyways.” He says almost coldly, he puts his earphones back in his ears and turns away from me to share the textbook with his friend. What was that? It was an accident, no need to treat me like a germ or something.

When Biology finishes, the boy stands up and quickly exits the classroom. He’s so fast that I can’t catch up before he disappears in the crowds of people walking through the hallways to get to their next class. I look at the textbook in my hand. I didn’t get to return it to him. A name is written in black pen in the top right corner ‘Oh Sehun’. I’ll assume that it is his name.

By the end of the day, I know that I have Math class with Yugyeom, Cho, Jinyoung and their other friend Jaebum, I have Chemistry with Cho, her friend Sojin, and Luhan, I have History class with Sojin, ‘Oh Sehun’, Minseok and Luhan but I didn’t get to return the textbook because it was in my locker and I have Physics with Yugyeom, his friend Mark, Sojin, Jinyoung and Yoongi. By the end of the day I’ve learn that at school there are three ‘houses’ that separate the school. Simply House 1, House 2 and House 3. When the school has events, the houses compete against each other to win points and earn a reward. Because I am in Yugyeom’s homeroom I am in House 2. There are only four year levels in this senior campus, year 9, 10, 11 and 12 and there are 6 homerooms in each year level, meaning that there are 8 homerooms in each house, 2 from each year level. Don’t worry, I was confused too when they were explaining to me. In House 1 there is the popular boy group called Exo, ‘Oh Sehun’, Luhan and Minseok are in that group. House 2 has Got7 which has Yugyeom and all his friends. And finally House 3 has a group called BTS which has Yoongi in it. When the school events come, these groups are usually the ones who compete on a totally different level, make it seem like life and death. Apparently the athletics carnival is arriving in a week. The different ways to earn points for your house is to participate, win an event, help the teachers, cheerlead and support. Yugyeom encouraged me to participate, because that is the best way to score lots of points for your house, after winning that is.
