나의 사랑, 나의 천사

Chapter One: One Year Ago

"I love you, my little unicorn."
Lay scrunched his nose up in distaste. "Ma, I'm not little anymore. Why do you insist on calling me your unicorn?" he whined, pausing while he ate his sandwich.
Mrs. Zhang chuckled at her son's behavior. "Because you're my only son - why can't I still call you my unicorn?"
Lay pursed his lips. "Because I'm not six anymore. I'm almost a legal adult!"
His mother laughed. "But you'll still be my son, Yixing."
The boy huffed in annoyance and threw away the remainder of his sandwich. "I promised to meet Sooyoung in town. I'll see you tonight." He threw his mother a smile.

The last smile he'd ever give her.

Choi SooYoung.
His girlfriend.

Just the thought of her brought a large smile to his face as he started the car and drove into town, all the way to the restaurant she worked at. He walked in and spotted her, just as she clocked out and headed towards the table she usually waited for him at.
Lay pushed his hands into his pockets and made his way to her, happiness flitting across her expression when she spotted him. "Hey."
Sooyoung smiled widely and stood up, wrapping her arms around his waist. Even though he wasn't much taller than her, she rested her head on his shoulder. "Oppa."
Lay's arms wrapped around her automatically, something he didn't even have to think about. "How was work?" he murmured, pulling back to smile at her.
Sooyoung shrugged. "The usual. Nothing special really happens here, anyway!" she smiled and untangled herself from him, opting to grab his hand instead. "Where are we going, anyway?"
Lay smirked playfully. "It's a surprise." Tugging her out gently, he lead the way to his car and opened the door for her, closing it gently. Jogging around to his side of the car, he got in and started it, pulling away from the curb smoothly. "You'll love it though."

Sooyoung laughed quietly. They'd arrived at their destination - a small lake. It had been a muggy day, and the idea of swimming was so tempting. "How do you know me so well?" she teased, unbuckling.
Lay chuckled. "Because we've been together so long. I even brought that swimsuit you left at my place a while back ago."
Sooyoung rolled her eyes playfully. "Well, you go on ahead then. I'm gonna change. No peeking, Yixing!"

A strong, hearty laugh left Lay's lips as he slipped his tee-shirt off and bounded towards the lake, not wasting anytime swimming in. Within moments, Sooyoung joined him, laughing as he began splashing her. "Oppa!"
Lay smirked and swam under the water, popping up behind Sooyoung. Swiftly, he wrapped his arms around her, pressing a kiss to her temple. "I love you..." he murmured, smiling against her skin.
Sooyoung turned in his embrace. "I love you too."
Lay rested his head against hers. "However...I can't refrain myself from doing this, jagiyah." Before she could ask him what he meant, he fell backwards purposely, bringing her down with him.
When they came back up, Sooyoung gasped for air and flicked his forehead. "Oppa!" she giggled, pushing her hair back from her eyes.
Lay laughed, and planting a swift kiss on her lips, let go, swimming away. "Catch me if you can, jagiyah!"
Laughing, Sooyoung swam after him, knowing he would feign tiredness and let her catch him.

"...and it has been reported that both the driver and passenger were pronounced dead on scene."
Lay sighed, running a hand through his hair. He'd just dropped Sooyoung off at her house, and was on his way home, where his parents would probably be waiting.
If only drivers could be more careful.
I'm going to be a little late, there's been a car accident. Not expecting a reply, he sent the text to his mother, waiting for the long line of cars to begin moving again.

When they did, he caught a glimpse of the accident. A black Ford, smashed into the guard rail, the back fender
pushed in as if it'd been hit.
Nothing special.
Until he took a closer look.

The back windshield was cracked, just like his mother's car.
Lay's heartbeat sped up. No, it's just a coincidence, he thought shakily.
And then he noticed the long, yellow mark, like the one on his mother's car, when she had accidentally
hit a post at a drive-thru for fast food.
Lay's hands began to shake, and he eased to a stop. Without thinking, he stammered out of the car, ignoring the honking from furious drivers behind him, and stumbled to the accident scene.

It was definitely his parent's car. The accessories inside proved it.
Lay felt as if he were suffocating. His knees gave out below him, and he found himself on the pavement of the road as a paramedic rushed over, having noticed the boy.
"Yah! What are you doing here? This is off-limits. Get up, boy!" When Lay didn't move, the paramedic knelt down next to him. "Did you hear me?"
Lay's eyes stumbled onto the paramedic. His mouth opened, but no sound came out until finally, a loud, terrified scream.
He screamed until his head hurt.
He screamed until his throat felt as if a knife were cutting through it.
He screamed until the paramedic brought him to the ambulance and eased his pain with morphine, effectively taking him into the world of sleep.

Lay awoke in a white room.
Confused, he sat up. He'd had the craziest dream.
"Mom?" he called out, rubbing his eyes. "Dad?"
Nobody came.
Only then did he notice the tubes attached to his arms.
Frowning, Lay yanked them out and stood up, walking unsteadily to the door. His legs felt like jelly. "Mom? Dad?"
Shock filled him when he opened the door to see people in scrubs running around, most with notepads in their hands.
Why was he in the hospital?
Fear filled him, and he stumbled out, catching a nurse's attention. "Sir, you're supposed to be in your bed," she said sternly.
Lay didn't comprehend a word she said, even though they spoke the same language. "Where's Mom? And Dad?" he asked, ignoring her unapproving look. "Where are they?"
The nurse gave in. "Name, please."
"Zhang Yixing. Their names are -"
The nurse's face paled. "Zhang? Are you sure?"
Lay barely paid attention to her change in attitude. "Yes. Their names are -"
Again, the nurse interrupted him. "Your parents are dead."
