Chapter 9

Your POV

"Really?? Is that all you can say?" I say, annoyed at Mark.

"What?!?!? What did I do wrong?"

"Do you know what I've been through?" I ask him.

"Sorry...." he mutters.

"I gotta go.." I tell him and rush away.

I catch a taxi back into town, and walk around the shops. I needed to find a job to make some money to spend in the upcoming holidays. After a few hours, I managed to find a job at a little store that sells merchandise for Valentine's Day which was in a few weeks.

---

Near The End of the First Day On The New Job

---

My last customer of the day was an older Italian woman called, Mrs Conchetti who walked into the store. My co-worker Dina told me that she shopped here at least once a week, buying mini figurines and and corny wall plagues that say things like 'A mother's love knows no bounds' and 'Home is where the heart is'.

"That's $48, please" I say to Mrs Conchetti.

"Here you are dear" she says, gives me the money and leaves with her mini cupid dolls.

I finish for the day and walk down to the bus station to catch the bus home.

Resigning myself to a long cold wait, I dug my mitten-ed hands into my coat pockets and crossed the street to the bus shelter where I sank down onto the tiny metal bench. There was a poster enclosed in the glass on one side advertising Mexican vacations, and I stared at it, wondering if I could ever go to Mexico.

"You got a cigarette?" I jumped at the sound of a voice and looked up to see a man in a brown jacket with two rips in the side. Some of the stuffing was falling out, and one of his shoelaces were broken, leaving his boot hanging open. His feet must be freezing not to mention wet.

"Sorry" I said. "I don't smoke."

He kind of grunted. "You got any change?"

I shook my head. All I had was my bus fare.

"Come on," he pressed. "A few quarters at least. I'm hungry." By this time he's come into the bus shelter and was standing next to me. He was so close that I could smell the alcohol on his breath.

I tried to remain calm. It wasn't that I'd never seen a homeless person before-I'd just never seen one this close up.

"I'm sorry, if I had extra money, I'd give it to you, I swear". A chunk of ice hit my shin and I yelped, more in panic then pain. "Okay, fine. Here". I pulled my mitten off and slid my hand into my coat pocket, about to take out my bus fare and give it to him. How was I gonna get home.....I'll worry about that later.

"Jack!" I heard someone call as my hand closed around the coins. A red car pulled up, slowing at the bus stop, and a guy leaned out of the window.

"What's the problem? Are you bothering her?" It wasn't until the homeless man turned that I got a clear view of the person in the car: Jr.-his ink black hair sticking out from under a blue and white wool hat.

"I was just asking for a little change," the man grumbled. "For something to eat. She's got money. I can hear it in her pocket."

"Come on," Jr. said. "Leave her alone. Look". He took out his wallet. "I've got a five. I give this to you, you go get a burger, you leave her alone. Deal?"

The homeless guy walked up to the car window, took the five, mumbled thanks and started walking off into the street.

"You okay?" Jr. asks, leaning out of his window again. The white pompom on his hat bobbed when he tilted his head.

"Of course," I said, trying to keep my voice even. After all, it's not like anybody ever dies from having ice chips kicked at them. I hadn't been in danger. "He wasn't really bothering me."

"Okay," he said, but I could tell he didn't believe me.

"You want a ride somewhere? It's pretty cold to be waiting for a bus. And I'm going your way."

How did he know which way I was going? I wondered.

But then, feeling like an idiot, I realized I was waiting for a Southbound bus. Obviously, I was going south. I shook my head. I didn't want to experience a really awkward car ride but a part of me really wanted to run too the car, open the door and hug Jr..

"Thanks, but I'm good though. The bus will be here in about twenty minutes."

"Want me to wait with you?" he offered. "I case Jack comes back. He's harmless but he has a bit of a temper when he's hungry. You might have noticed."

"No, thanks" I said, wishing he'd just leave but another part of me thought the opposite. "Honestly, I'm fine"

"Okay then...." he says and drives his car away from the bus station.I watched as he drove down the street before doing a u-turn and circling back through the parking lot of the mall. He pulled into a space facing the road and turned off the headlights. At first I though he must of been going to the mall but then, why wasn't he getting out of the car?

And that was about when I figured out: He was waiting to make sure I got on the bus safely. I couldn't help it, I gritted my teeth . Hadn't I told him that I was okay. It's not like I needed a knight in shining armor.

I stood up and walked to the curb, trying to catch his eye. It was hard to see all the way across the street ad through his darkened windshield, but I could make out the white of his pompom. A second later, he glanced up and I waved to get this attention. When he waved back, I glared at him, making a shooing motion with my hand.

"Go home, you idiot" I said, even though I knew he couldn't hear me. "I'm fine. Leave!". He shrugged like he didn't understand.

"Go home!!" I said, shooing him again. He rolled down the window and leaned out.

"What?" he shouted

"I said I'm fine. You can go now" I yelled back

"Sorry, didn't catch that" he said, cupping a hand around his ear. I rolled my eyes.

"Go!!!" I yelled as loud as I possibly could. "Go, go, go!!"

"Snow?? Oh, snow!!" he yelled back. I'd swear he was grinning. "Snow, snow, snow!! Yeah, a lot of it!! Happens every winter!!" he waved. "See you sometime!" he called before rolling his window back up and continuing to sit in his car, going no where.

I stamped my feet in frustration. I saw the headlights of the bus in the distance. It was running 5 minutes early but hey, I didn't mind.

"It's a chilly one out there," the bus driver quipped as I climbed on.

"Definitely cold" I answered.

"Cold is right." The driver laughed. "I'd even go a far as to say frosty." The bus lurched forward and I turned my head and looked out the window.

The bus started down the road but then screeched to a halting stop. The bus door opened and a guy jumped on. Not just any guy, it was Jr.. He walked up to me and took me in his arms.

"I'm sorry for everything, but if you like Mark and want to date him, then that's okay with me because I love you so much that I would give you the chance to decide who you want. He kisses me, ever so lightly that I thought I had imagined it and walked out of the bus and onto the road.

The bus started down the road again and I turned my eyes away from the red car's headlights, to the boy driving the car.

He looked at me with eyes that told me to pick him. He mouthed 'I'm sorry' and turned a corner and disappeared....
