Lost on the road of the heart

Chapter 2

Your POV:
Minho walked me to my classroom before heading to his practice.
He was my friend since I was eight and he was twelve. We met that summer in Jeju Island while I was playing alone.
Back then I was my parents’ only child, my dongsaek didn’t come to the world yet, and my parents were too busy to keep up with me all day long, we actually went there because of one business of theirs. I was supposed to stay at the hotel while they are away, but I was too bored to be an obedient daughter and just went out without them knowing. To not be caught up, I went back before them coming back from work.
That day, I went overboard. I wondered around and ended up on top of a cliff. I walked till the edge of it, and stood there watching the breath taking view, and feeling the water sprained all over the air as the waves crushed on the rocks, it was so beautiful I lost myself to it until a voice waked me up. It was a child’s shouting. I looked around to find a tall boy running toward me. He just grabbed my wrist and dragged me with him far from the edge before he started to lecture me.
“Are you crazy? Why were you standing there? What if you fall of the cliff? Do you know that you’ll end up dying? And why are you here alone? Where are your parents, you are too young to be going around by yourself!”
I just looked at him as he spoke each word. He wasn’t that grown up himself, he was a kid too, and he was kind of cute. I looked at his worried brown eyes and found them just beautiful, but why was he that worried. As he ended up his speech I finally talked to him.
“Would you like to play with me?”
He looked at me dumbfounded, jaw dropping.
“I said would you like to play with me? I’m here alone because there is no one to keep me company.” I just added as he didn’t answer, my eyes now looking at my hand, trying to restrain myself from crying. I was craving for company since days now, and it just made me sad each time I thought about the fact I was alone.
“But where are your parents? Playing with you isn’t the problem here!”
“At work… they are always at work, and I go out and play around by myself…”
“Ah… I see.”
We stayed quiet for a bit, and the moment the silence started to get heavy he talked again.
“Let’s take you back home first then we’ll see if I can play with you or not? I’m not going to stay at Jeju for too long, I’m moving out somewhere else soon!”
He then just grabbed my little hand in his and accompanies me to the hotel. None of us said a thing during the whole walk, but it didn’t feel strange at all, something about him, even if I was too young to know these things, just made me feel at ease. At the door, he asked me to go back to my room and stay there until my parents are back and NEVER go back to the cliff alone. I just nodded. He was about to leave when I asked: “what’s your name?”
“Minho… Choi Minho”
“Are you going to play with me?”
“I don’t know …” he answered and just walked away.
I watched him walk away for a while before heading to the hotel room, where I just wondered why he didn’t ask back to know my name. Maybe he just didn’t want to play with me …
The next day, I waited again my parents to go to work before I went out. I didn’t go to the cliff, I just wanted to listen to Minho’s words, so I just went to the beach. There, I saw the silhouette I watched the day before leaving, sitting on the sand.
“It’s Minho!” I exclaimed to myself and run toward him, happy I came to see him again. When I approached him I walked slowly making sure to be completely silent and surprise him, but as I was right behind him, I heard his sobs. I didn’t know what to do, so I just stood in front of him and looked at him. He was actually crying, his eyes and nose all red. Before looking at the person standing in front of him, he whipped his tears, and put on a smile. Then he raised his head and got surprise as he discovered me there.
“Hey!” he said, looking anywhere but in my eyes.
“Why are you crying Minho-shi?”
“I’m not …”
“But look, your eyes are all red, do you want me to play with you too? This way none of us will be sad… I promise I will be a good friend and won’t bother you the least!”
He just smiled at me, and asked for my name.
“____ Imnida”
“____-ah, I really want to play with you too, but I’m moving out today to Seoul… And that is making me sad, because I have to leave my friends here, and my old home.”
He smiled again, hiding his sadness, and I just looked at him not knowing what to do, at last I was just eight. I came up with the bright idea of hugging him, that’s what my appa did to me each time I cried, he hugged me and patted on my back, so I did the same with him. The moment I put my arms around him, he gulped.
“____-ah, what are you doing?”
“Please Minho-ah don’t be sad! If you go to Seoul, I’ll be your friend forever, I live there too!”
“Gamsa amnida ____-ah!”
We stayed like that for a while before someone called for him. It was his dad and he had to leave.
“I have to go now ___-ah. Annyong… and don’t do dangerous things anymore, arasso?” he said, winked at me and ruffled my hair before leaving.
“Annyong Minho-ah, see you in Seoul!” I answered happily, forgetting that Seoul was too big for two stranger kids to meet, especially when the only thing they knew about each other was their names.
We spent one more week in Jeju, my parents and I, before heading back home, and I spent that time going to the beach and playing alone, I never went back to the cliff, instead I would only think of Minho’s words, he was the only one who cared about me when my parents were too busy.

Minho’s POV:
It had been a week since we moved out of Jeju Island and came to Seoul. It was like going to a whole different planet, and I wondered if I can get used to it any soon, I still had no friends there, so in my free time, I just played videogames by myself, watched games on TV or wandered the streets alone. I missed playing football, I missed my team there, and that made my solitude feel even worst. School wasn’t going start before a whole month, so things were getting boring.
Then, there was that day where I woke up, and went out for courses. As I stepped out of the house, I saw a car stop in front of the neighbor’s house. I thought the house was unoccupied, but from the look of it they just were away for a while. One grown up couple took off the car and went to the back of the car, opens the safe and took out the luggage, while a girl went out of the car; she was wearing a cute pink dress that gave me a feeling of a déjà-vu. I shoved this feeling away, and walked in the direction of the nearest convenience store. As I walked by the car, a little voice called for me.
“Minho-ah!”
I turned around to see the little girl in pink come toward me, and as she came near me, I recognized that cherry face of her.
“Minho-ah! It’s me, ____, remember me? We met last week in Jeju and I promised to be your friend!” she exclaimed as I looked at her with a big surprise.
That day when she said that we’ll see each other at Seoul, I just thought it was impossible, and that I shouldn’t bother myself with her. I mean what was our chance to meet in a city of nine millions of people! And there we were being neighbors. What she said was just true, she was going to be my friend forever; something about her made believe so back then, something that made my heart beat too fast as I saw her, that something that made me care too much about her the day I saw her standing at the edge of that cliff, that special something that made her feel so special, that same special thing that even today, ten years after our first meeting, my heart beats fast as I see her coming toward me, that special thing that made me want her to stop being just my best friend but something a little bit more.
