Chapter 1. Homesick

You missed the city. The loud noises from the street, beautiful yet a bit crappy view from the third floor of your small apartment. The fast food and that cheap but pretty good pizza place you used to work in. It wasn’t at all a complain, just a nostalgic moment.

One month. Just one month since you moved out to that little town and you were already thinking of calling your mother to move back in with her. But there was turning back, Irene already bought you a mattress and put it on the spare room she had.

Your best friend, Irene. The second reason why you moved out there, because the main reason was the major you wanted to study…. far far away from home. Very far away from all the trouble and your parent’s divorce drama. Your brother was so lucky to get away first. So that was it.

“Are you working late tonight?” your best friend showed up, jumping on her knees at the edge of the bed, and almost moving all study material you had there.
“Uhm no, why?”
“Well, I’m going out with Kai and his friends. So, I wanted to know if you can cover me up with Mr. Kim, because I’ll probably stay at his place”
“At Mr. Kim’s place? Isn’t he a little too old and bald for you?” you joked. Irene smiled rolling her eyes. It was one of the things she loved about you, that you always had a great sense of humor no matter the circumstances.
“I meant at Kai’s. Come on Y/N, I’m serious!”
“Okay, okay. I will” you promised while taking the books you were reading and placing them on the shelf above your bed.
“Thanks for the invitation, by the way” Irene sighed, heavily.
“I’m sorry, it’s that I don’t want you to come with me. It’s just that it’s uhm, a private concert with a local band. And we have no idea if they’re going to sell…you know… any kind of funny medicine. And the less people the better”
“Oh…” you looked at your best friend, a bit concerned. “Just, be careful. Please? Text me when you get to Kai’s apartment”
“Sure mom” Now it was your turn to roll your eyes and playfully throw a pillow at her face.
“Talking about mothers. Shouldn’t you be studying for midterms?”
“Maybe. I have a group study on Tuesday. So, I might study there”
“I don’t believe you a bit. But hey, it’s your life. We’re almost adults…” you got up, opening your closet to search for some clothes. You had twenty minutes to get change to go to your part-time job.
“We’re 22”
“And already legal, so we gotta start being responsible”
“YOU gotta stop being so uptight. I am responsible, I just relax when I have to. And well, it’s Friday so…time to relax”
You turned back to face your best friend, she had this smile that made you stop complaining. “Okay, I’m sorry for calling you out…again”
“It’s fine. Just… take it easy” Irene winked at you.
“Will do. But now, it’s time to work to pay my bills”

The Sweet Lies coffee bar, was like another little coffee shop. The difference was that at the city you were used to pick up the coffee from Starbucks at the drive-in. The place was nice. Everything made of vintage dark wood, very much the kind of place you liked.
It was pretty early, but you loved to have your space before any new costumer or co-worker came in. Although, the barista was always there, very busy with the coffee machines. Lucky for you, Xiumin was a quiet guy. He respected everyone’s personal space. Always so into his thoughts as he prepared capuccinos or in this case, pumpkin latte’s. So, every time crossed the glass doors into the shop, he would just look at you and slightly smile as a way of saying hi.
Like any other day you will approach the stereo to plug in your phone and put a playlist. The manager let the employees to put up their playlist as long as it wasn’t some “noisy heavy metal shit”, according to his words. You controlled the urge to make a joke about it.
Being a mid-time waitress wasn’t that bad. The tips were good, because the costumers were nice people, including the regulars. The smell of the pastries was delicious, and she once in a while, the cook gave her a taste of his “new creations”. A really nice place to work.

After hours of taking orders, serving and pouring hot coffee on mugs, it was finally closing time. 9:20 p.m. You took off your apron, and let your hair down, your head was hurting a bit from the tight pony tail you had, but it was okay, a nice sleep would do the job.

“Y/N, so what’s next?” Hani, the other waitress approached to you, putting on her sweater. “Where do you wanna go today?”
“Home. I need a long a relaxing bath”
“Booooring! Let’s go get some drinks, shall we?”
“Why everyone on this town likes to party and be reckless?”
“Because it’s weekend! And I don’t plan staying on a Friday night at home, while I can just go to a bar a get some drinks. Come on, I know a pretty good bar. It’s safe and really close to your street’s apartment”
“Again? I mean, I don’t want to sound disrespectful but, don’t you get tired of always covering for roommate?”
“She’s not just my roommate, she’s my best friend. And yeah, yeah, she’s been distant lately, but I guess she’s just really… spending quality time with Kai. When she lived in city she wasn’t that happy, and he apparently makes her happy so…”
Hani looked at you in disapproval and then took your coat.
“Listen. I know that she means a lot to you, and that she knows you since you were kids and everything, but I’m also your friend and it worries me that you don’t go out that often…” the moment you met Hani you knew she was going to be a really great person. And you appreciated that she was supportive, but there was no excuse to tell her that you didn’t really wanna go out.
“Hani I…”
“No, no! Wait. Let’s make a deal. We go out, to take one or two beers and then Jin and I will drop you home early before your landlord notice”
It didn’t sound so bad. You still had your doubts, but there was no harm on getting a couple of beers and have a chit-chat.
You sighed deeply and took the coat out of Hani’s hands letting her know you were in. She smiled and jumped a little bit excited.
“By the way, shouldn’t we invite Xiumin?” you asked.
“Oh, no I don’t think that would be necessary”
“What? Why not? He’s the boss, when the manager is not around. Shouldn’t we just at least tell him if he wants to join?”
“Y/N, trust me, I’ve tried. But he always says he has something else better to do or that he’s too tired for that”
You looked at Xiumin, cleaning the coffee machines, concentrated. You felt a bit bad, if Hani was inviting you out, you could do the same for him. So, ignoring your friend’s words you just walked towards him with a smile. “Hey!” He stopped to look at you smiling back.
“Hey”
“So uhm, the guys and I are going to get some drinks at the local bar. You can come with us, if you want”
“It’s very nice of you to invite me” he said in a soft tone, almost charming. “Unfortunately, I already have plans, sorry about that, really”
“Oh, no, no. It’s okay if you already have plans! I mean it’s Friday, of course you have plans” you gave yourself a mental slap. Feeling a bit embarrassed. “We can hang out next time or…something…”
Xiumin couldn’t help but smile at your nervous laugh, thinking it was a bit adorable. “Okay, you guys have fun”
“Thank you! You have fun too. Good night” you turned around just to see Hani and Jin at the door trying not to laugh after your lame attempt.
You got into her car, she promised not to drink that much, because she was the designated driver, soon you started thinking that it was a really bad idea.
“You’re gonna love the bar, it has the kind of music you like. And they also sell some food, for the munchies, you know…” Jin said sitting at the front sit. You just nodded and smiled, putting on the seatbelt and watching through the window. Suddenly you noticed something strange…
A motorcycle parked in front of the coffee house and a guy just leaning next to it. Her surprise grew when you saw Xiumin greeting the guy and riding the motorcycle right behind that guy. Now, that was confusing.
But you didn’t have any more time to even make questions because Hani already took off.

Hangovers weren’t your field of expertise, and this one was going to be the second and the worst one of your life. That local bar, was pretty good, but you had no idea that they were making a contest that night. A beer pong contest to be honest. Of course, you refused to participate at first, but after Hani convinced you to just play one match, you were doomed.
Everything started to happen very fast, and just a bit blurry. You were still a bit conscious enough to not do anything stupid, but you couldn’t help speaking no sense… really embarrassing no sense.

“Seriously! Sometimes I don’t get it… what’s the point of finding a nice guy, fall in love and then getting married and have his kids?! In the end there’s always something not working out and when you least expect it… BAM! You divorce!” talking about your parents was never easy, and it just took a bit of alcohol to let it out.
“Wow, Y/N, I had no idea about that…” Hani said, taking away the glass of beer from your hands, but every time she did that you would take another one or someone else’s. “Listen, I think you had enough of this…. Why don’t we go home?”
“Home?I can’t go home. I need… I need a plane tickeeet for that”
“No, I meant. Your apartment. Now, come on let’s go”
The way back to your apartment was a bit trippy, you were laying in the backseat and getting a bit sleepy until Hani helped you to take you out.
“Okay, where are your keys?” Hani whispered letting you rest in the wall while she took your purse.
“In one of the little pockets…I guess… I don’t know, you look for theemm..” you mumbled
“Okay, let’s get you in” The luck was on your side that night, Mr. Kim wasn’t around so you got inside safely. “Alright, you’re gonna regret this in the morning probably…”
You mumbled something that Hani didn’t get, but finally you made it to your bed.
“Thanks Hana…” you said closing your eyes before seeing her smile.
“Sleep well, Y/N”
