True Love Never Dies

The Approval.

After two hours, the meeting was done and everyone had left the hall outside. Shaun drove me to the restaurant to meet his mom, Ryan, Janey, Joon, and Jaelynn. As we walked into the restaurant, we saw everyone sitting down waiting. I could tell that Janey was a bit uncomfortable meeting Ryan’s mom who is intimidating. Me and Shaun took our seats right next to each other in front of his mom who were looking directly at me. We all ordered food and waited. While waiting, Shaun’s mom starts talking.

“It’s so great to have all of my boys here for lunch”, Miyoung says.

“I actually want to introduce everyone to my girlfriend, Janey”, Ryan says to everyone.

Janey smiles & says to everyone, “it’s nice to meet everyone in the family.”

Miyoung starts questioning Janey, “so what do you do Janey?”

Once Shaun’s mom asked Janey that, me and Shaun looked at each other nervously thinking here she goes again with the questions and interrogating her sons relationships. I didn't want to say anything because i know that Janey could handle it herself.

“I’m a doctor and surgeon at the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles”, Janey says nicely.

“What‘s your nationality? Korean? American?” Miyoung asks.

Janey says, “my father is Korean and my mother is Vietnamese. So i’m half and half.”

Miyoung asks, “and you can speak both Korean and Vietnamese?”

“Yes, i can”, Janey says.

“You don’t look like your from here”, Miyoung takes a look at Janey & says.

Janey says, “i was born in Korea and lived there until i was 14. I moved to Vietnam and continued my education there until i was 27. Then i got the chance to come over here to the states and got a job in LA.”

Miyoung asks, “why did you move from Korea to Vietnam?”

“My father’s job were being transferred and my mother wanted to go home to Vietnam so it was a better choice to do so.” Janey says.

“And how did you come over here?” Miyoung continues to ask her questions.

Janey explains, “Jana helped me with the immigration papers when she was here and i was there. She’s actually my cousin from my mom side.”

Miyoung says, “wow. It has been a long journey for you then.”

“It has and i’m very grateful to be living and working here”, Janey smiles & says.

“Moving on to this subject. There is something i actually want to say to Jana.” Miyoung says.

Miyoung slides the file in front of Jana & say, “the grant has been approved by the federal government and you can open up your own academy now.”

I take a look at the file and it really says approved grant from the government. It was right in front of my eyes. I looked up to meet Miyoung and ask her.

Jana says in confusion, “i don't understand. I thought it was a closed case and they never approved it.”

“After so many people talking to me, i’d realized how important you are to this family and my son. You and Shaun deserve the best. All i want for my sons are for them to be happy and you gave Shaun that with your love. Love really shouldn't matter about religion or culture but about each other.” Miyoung says.

“So i'm giving you my blessing to marry my son Shaun”, Miyoung smiles & says.

I smiled at Shaun’s mom and went over to hug her tightly. I was so happy and everyone could see that on my face. I finally got her approval to marry her son. We continued on to having lunch together, the seven of us. After lunch, me and Shaun went to the market to buy something for Ryan’s housewarming party. We bought some Korean fruit and a bed set as a gift for him. Then we went home to rest for a little while.
