Chapter 36
*Flashback *
“Yah! Jeongguk-ah over here!” Sungjin called out before I was about to pass the ball a guy a few inches taller than him started to block him, shit what do I do? Time was running out and everyone on the sidelines was yelling out and cheering. I should just shoot it, everything was now in slow motion, I look around still dribbling the ball to see if I could pass It to anyone close to the hoop, there’s no one. “JUST SHOOT!!” I hear my teammates yell desperate for me take action, I guess here I go, I took the ball and shot it to the hoop as hard as I can, the ball went flying and everyone’s eyes were on it, miss or make? The ball hits the rim rolling around…until it actually went in! Fuck we just won!!! All the guys ran to me holding me up above their shoulders, “VICTORYYYYY” they all shouted, it is indeed another victory.
We were all showering and dressing in the locker rooms getting ready to celebrate our winning game for tonight, “We’re gonna celebrate all night fellas at the karaoke lounge!” Sungjin yelled out as everyone cheered, I just laughed as I was putting my shirt back on, “You coming this time Jeongguk?” Sungjin put his arm around me, “I mean we can’t celebrate without the winner here,” “yeah come Jeongguk!” all the team members were saying, “I-I don’t know guys, I have to be up early to fish,” “Aw, c’mon man your old man should be fine with you celebrating our final win of the year,” “Uh,” I nervously smiled closing my locker, “Y’know, Hayoon is going to be there…” he smirked, Hayoon? I gulped looking at him, “Mmhm, yeah, you’re definitely coming alright.”
Everyone was pigging out and singing on the karaoke, and I’m pretty sure someone snuck alcohol in, we’re only 15/16 for god’s sake, I really don’t want to get into trouble. I sat on the couch watching everyone having a good time, I only came because they said Hayoon would be here, but…she’s not. I think I should leave, I’m already uncomfortable. I got up and slowly eased my way back to the door hoping no one would notice me trying to go home, some of them were a bit tipsy singing so I should be okay.
I opened the door trying to make a break for it but ran into someone falling over them. Well…her. “Aish,” she looks up at me rubbing her head, “S-s-sorry,” I quickly say getting off of her, “ah, it’s okay…” she says trying to fix her skirt, I averted my eyes as I got a glimpse her polka-dotted underwear, “You saw didn’t you?” she drills her eyes into me, I shook my head still looking elsewhere, “You’re a bad liar,” she chuckles, “Well aren’t ya going to help me up?” I look down at her as she pouts, she’s…really cute. “Oh, right, sorry,” I held out my hand and she firmly grasped it standing up. “Your face was red, so, I know you saw it.” She squints her eyes. “I didn’t mean to, I…I have to leave.” I began to walk passed her but felt her grabbing my arm, “Jeongguk, why are you leaving?” “Um…” “We could…we could go somewhere else if you like,”
We were taking a walk at the port, it was pretty dark but all the boats that were still out in the water were shining, making it look like stars were on the water. Hayoon was skipping in front of me like a kid, she’s really cute, I can’t believe I’m hanging out with her, especially at night.
“You still go out fishing?” she looks back at me waiting for me to catch up with her. “Uh…sometimes,” I say, “I see, my mom is still making me sell fish at the market, I honestly hate it because I come home smelling horrible,” “You? No you don’t, you always smell amazi--,” fuck, that sounds creepy, she turns back to look at me again only she was smiling, “I meant to say, oh, I didn’t think the smell would stick to people,” fuck, nice save Jeongguk,
“Yeah, it does sometimes. I just want to leave this town and go live somewhere far like Incheon or Seoul, I’m tired of this ocean and fishes” “Are you planning to go to Uni there?” “I would like to, but, my family isn’t that rich so, one can dream, right?” she laughs taking a seat on the edge of the dock, “Sit Jeongguk,” I hesitantly sit next to her, only scooting away from her as much as possible, “Why are you far, come here,” she pats the spot close to her, I gulped and slightly moved towards her. “You’re so shy Jeongguk,” she giggles, I licked my lips and just looked out the dark water not saying anything,

“It’s such a beautiful night,” she sighs, why am I getting nervous all of a sudden? This kind of feels like a date, “Jeongguk?” her voice made me jump a bit, “Y-yes Hayoon?” “Have you ever had a girlfriend before?” did she just ask me that?? “U-u-uh…” “I guess not,” she giggles, “I was just asking because I always see you around school by yourself even though you’re pretty popular with everyone since you’re good at sports.” “oh…I guess?” I rubbed the back of my neck, is that really why she asked me?
“Actually, I asked because a friend of mines was planning on confessing to you.” “What? Me?” my voice almost cracked, “mmhm, Kim Eunji the cheerleader.” “Oh…” Well, Eunji is definitely not my type. “Are you….interested in her?” she asked looking down at her legs that were kicking back and forth, “N-no, I’m not.” She looks up at me with wide eyes, “Really? I-I mean she’s really beautiful and popular.” I shrugged my shoulders, “That doesn’t mean I’m attracted to her,”
“Oh…yeah, right.” We were both quiet now and I didn’t know what else to say from that, it was pretty much getting late and I should probably walk her home. “Jeongguk?” “Yes Hayoon?” “Can I, tell you something?” I looked at her and could tell she was blushing, “I um, I always, kind of, liked you, since our 1st year, well, I mean, I kind of…still do.”
Hayoon…likes me? “You’re probably not looking for a relationship since you’re busy with sports and fishing and you don’t really like to hang out with people but I just…wanted to let you know that.” She turns her head to look in the opposite direction. Did Hayoon really confess to me? She’s been liking me all this time?? “Well, we should get going it’s getting late and kind of chilly,” she gets up brushing dirt off of her skirt, “Shall we?” she half smiled, I get up and we began to walk out of the port area and then out of nowhere I found myself grabbing her wrist, “Hayoon…” she turns her head back to look at me,
“Thank you for, telling me your feelings.” What am I doing? “I…I’ve always liked you...always. Since 1st year too.” I averted my eyes feeling the rush of blood to my face. I let go of her wrist and we just stood there, awkwardly. Shit, did I really confess too??
A smile grew on her face, “So…what now?” I honestly have no clue! What do guys do after they confess? “Oh uh…um…” I scratched the back of my head trying to figure out what the hell to do, all of sudden she comes closer and kissed my cheek. I touched the cheek she kissed and stared back at her trying to process what just happened, she slowly grabs my face with both of her hands and pulls me slightly down to kiss her.
This…is my first kiss…
