Chapter 5

When I woke up, I knew Jun was gone. “How are you feeling dear?” Madam Pomfrey asks, bustling over to me from her office as soon as I start to sit up. “Better. It doesn’t hurt anymore.” “That’s good. Now, you can go back to your dorm, but if anything is painful, you best come back and tell me. I’ll not have someone injured waltzing around the school like they’re fine.” I agree and gather my things, taking my time back to the dorm. The girls had shown up at some point while I was asleep and had left a pile of sweets on my bedside table. Carrying them into the room, I draw all three pairs of eyes. “Are you okay now?” Nina asks immediately, getting up from her bed. “We were so worried. We didn’t know how badly you were hurt until we saw you cuddling with that ‘one horny motherfucker’.” She snickers and I chuck a chocolate frog at her.
“He was soothing me. Shut up, I know that sounds bad.” I give up on explaining as they start giggling. “Was it last month that you said you wouldn’t fuck him?” “I said I wouldn’t fuck him because he basically expected me to do so.” “That makes no sense but whatever.” Hanna shrugs, going back to perfecting her makeup. “Is there another party? Even with classes tomorrow?” I ask, putting my things away. “Yeah. Some of the Ravenclaw kids smuggled in some vodka and I was invited. Did you want to come? I could get you in, too.” “I’m good. I’ve had enough excitement for the weekend. You guys have fun, okay?” They nod and finish getting ready before calling goodbye and leaving. Suffocated in the silent room, I grab my bag and go out to the common room, spreading my homework on one of the circular tables. “How are you feeling?” Seokmin asks, appearing and sitting down. “I’m fine now. The pain’s gone. I should be able to practice this week.”
Seokmin frowns. “You’re not supposed to do physical activity after getting hurt.” I shrug. “I’m strong. If I say I’m okay, I am. If I get hurt during practice, you can say ‘I told you so.’ Okay?” He grumbles and opens one of my textbooks from a marked page. “What class is this for?” He goes back to the cover. “Life and Death, Advanced Potion Handbook. We needed this for potions? It wasn’t on my list?” He stares at the book, confused. “That’s just an extra book I picked up to learn something new.” I murmur, taking it from his hands and setting it aside. “Life and Death potions?” He narrows his eyes and I pretend I don’t hear him as I continue writing an essay on essence. “It looked interesting.” I say, hoping he’ll back off. “What would you need those potions for?” “Lee Seokmin, drop it.” I didn’t want to get into it. Secrets were meant to be secret. “Alright then, I’ll leave. Just don’t, kill anyone. Okay?” My lips twitch upwards. “No promises.” He huffs in annoyance and stalks off. Sighing, I drop my pen and glance at the book. I wasn’t ready to reveal my secrets and didn’t know if I ever would be. Living in Japan was both wonderful and terrible, leaving scars both inside and outside of me. “Miss Yuki Park?” A little voice squeaks, making me jump in my seat.
Looking around, I spot Cotton standing next to the table. “Miss Eve Wilson asked me to come and bring you crepes. Would you like to have them in the common room?” Blinking, I shake my head quickly. “I’ll just make a mess in here. Do you think I could eat them up on the astronomy tower?” “Of course, anything Miss Park likes. I shall wait up in the astronomy tower for you to arrive.” Cotton disapparates and I quickly pack up my books, hauling my bag over my shoulder and hurry up to the astrology tower. I find Cotton with a large platter of crepes filled with strawberries and whipped cream. “Cotton paid attention to the way Misses Park and Wilson ate their crepes last time and did it for you. Could I help you with anything else?” I shake my head, smiling. “Thank you Cotton.” “My pleasure Miss Park.” She disapparates again and I set my bag down against one of the support pillars.
The astronomy tower was just a few pillars supporting the stone roof. The rest of it was open to air, so I sit on the edge, letting my feet dangle dangerously over the side of the tower. Pulling the platter towards me, I sigh and start eating. Watching the grounds, I nearly choke on a crepe as Vernon appears, riding his broom towards me. “I thought that was you! What’re you doing up here, Yuki noona? Isn’t that dangerous?” He stops in front of me and I shrug. “As long as no one pushes me or scares me I’m safe. I’m actually taking a break from all the stuff going on down there.” I motion to the grounds and Vernon nods. “What’re those?” I follow his gaze to the food. “Come here and I’ll share.” He doesn’t hesitate and lands, setting down his broom and joining me on the ledge. “This is actually really beautiful.” He breathes, staring at the grounds. “Yeah, I found it last month when I was exploring. No one comes up here unless they have class, which is always at night. So it’s pretty quiet.” Vernon nods and picks up what must have been his fifth crepe. We see a spot of blue and silver coming towards us and Vernon quickly crams the last of the crepe into his mouth. “It’s Chan, I have to go back to practice. Bye noona.” He leaves before I call goodbye and I chuckle, closing my eyes as I start humming.
Reaching back for another crepe, instead my hand collides with another and I shriek, jumping. An arm quickly snakes around my waist to keep me from falling and he giggles. “Don’t do that!” I slap the top of his head and he takes Vernon’s vacated spot. “How’d you find me?” I ask, picking up another crepe. “I saw you from the lake. It’s not like you were hiding in the shadows.” Jun shrugs and eyes the platter. “Go ahead. It’s just comfort food. I’m probably not going to eat all of it anyway.” He nods and takes one. “Did you come to ask if I was okay like Seokmin?”
I watch dried leaves swirl across the grounds, mindlessly taking a bite of the food. “No. I know you’re not alright. I just came to keep you company.” “What made you think I needed company?” I wince internally at the cold answer. “Because it’s obvious. I know you’re a Hufflepuff. All loyalty, tolerance and kindness. But right now, you’re not truly one. You’re in a dark place and you’re not letting anyone in to help you out of it. Tell me I’m wrong.” I don’t. For a sixteen year old, he was surprisingly smart to have put the pieces together. “So even if you won’t let anyone in, the least I can do is keep you company, even in silence. Or at least Wonwoo can if you don’t want me to bother you.”
“I’m not ready.”
I say so quiet that I can barely hear myself over the wind blowing around us. “I’m pretty patient.” Is his only reply. “These are surprisingly good.” He changes the topic and I feel myself relax slightly. “Of course they are, Cotton made them.” “Cotton?” Jun asks as if he’d never heard that name. “One of the house elves down in the kitchen. She’s named Cotton.” I jump when there’s a loud pop behind us. “Did Miss Park call for me?” “U-uh yeah. It’s actually kind of chilly up here. Could we maybe have some hot chocolate please?” Cotton makes a confirming sound and disapparates only to appear a minute later, two humongous mugs in her hands and she wobbles over to us. “There you are! Enjoy!” She disappears and I smile at the spot after she leaves. She was such a sweet house elf. “Oh okay. I never really stay down in the kitchen. I usually let the food come to me.” I glance over at him and see him wink.
I roll my eyes and nudge him with my elbow. “The kitchens are amazing, really. It’s so close to the Hufflepuff basement that it barely takes five minutes to get in and get out for food. I’ve been there so many times that I’m pretty sure I know every elf by name.” “And how long have you been here?” Jun muses aloud. “Don’t laugh. I prefer the house elves to hormonal teenagers.” “I’m not laughing. I just find it interesting.” “Mhm.” I hold a steaming mug between my hands, warming them.
“Why do you let me be so, free, with you? I can tell that you know martial arts, but you just let me do whatever.”
Jun asks, sipping at the hot chocolate. “Truthfully?” I murmur into the mug. He nods. “I don’t actually know. Maybe it is because I’m lonely. Maybe I want to feel safe. Maybe it helps me relax. It might be all of them, I’m just confused about it.” It’s silent as we both drink our hot chocolate. “If you ever need something to relax you, I’m always free.” Secretly glad he’d skipped over the ‘safe’ part, I eye him and he rolls his eyes. “I promise I won’t do anything sexual.” “Deal.” I breathe and notice him freeze. “You’re actually going to let me like, hug you?” “Don’t expect too much.” “So no biting?” I huff. “I don’t know, okay? If it helps, maybe.” He grins and downs the rest of his hot chocolate. “Can I have this last one?” I look over at the almost empty platter. “Yeah, I don’t think I could eat one more.” He happily helps himself to it and I smile, shaking my head a little at how happy he seemed now. Finishing my hot chocolate, I set the mug down and it disappears along with the platter and Jun’s mug. “I have another question.” I nod, letting him continue. “Arthur. It was him, right?” I close my eyes with a sigh. “Yeah, I’m pretty sure. The bludger was bewitched and it was hit straight towards me. I know Wonwoo wouldn’t have hit it at me, so the only other person is Arthur.” “I’m going to-“I shake my head. “Don’t do anything. It’s not worth it. I don’t know why he has it out for me, but he’s not worth the time of day. I heard you guys actually. That time in the common room.”
His skin pales slightly and I shake my head. “I think he’s chosen to hurt me instead of fuck me for some reason. It’s confusing.” “I don’t, really don’t think that way about you anymore.” I look over at him to see his face is serious. “In the beginning I figured you were just another city girl that was feisty on the outside but still wanted sex. I figured out pretty soon after your sleepover that I was an asshole. You’re my friend, I wouldn’t want to hurt you like that. Or let you get hurt by that asshole. I’m sorry.”
I feel my heart melt a little at his words and smile. “Thank you. I accept your apology.” It’s silent for a moment before Jun gets up. “It’s starting to get cold, let’s go inside.” I take his hand and he pulls me to my feet, pulling me after him down to the Hufflepuff basement corridor. I look at him in confusion. “Go in. See you at dinner.” He pushes me forward a little and waits until I let myself in before walking away. Curling up on the couch in front of the fireplace, I surround myself in one of the patchwork quilts and watch the fire.
Skinship.
That’s what I was missing. Mahoutokoro had been devoid of it. Outside of the bedroom, there were no casual touches. There weren’t any secret smiles because then it was used against you. Everything was strict and that was why I craved skinship over anything else. Just a simple hug did wonders to calm me down. I don’t remember how long I laid there staring at the flames dancing back and forth until someone walks into my line of view. Blinking, I look up at a smiling Hao. “Seokmin told me to come see if you’re still annoyed at him.” I sigh. “I wasn’t that annoyed. It’s just, if someone is avoiding a subject, its common sense to leave it alone. He didn’t drop it until I told him to.” “Ah. I understand. I think he’s just worried because you just got hurt and you’re acting like you’re fine. You might be fine, but we really can’t help but worry. That’s what friends are for, right?” He sits down at the other end of the couch. “Yeah, I’m sorry. I’m just not used to being so open. My old school looked down on that and I just got used to it like that.” “I understand. I think the boys forget that sometimes though. I’ll remind them later. Did you finish your essay that Seokmin interrupted?” I grumble as he reminds me and shake my head. Sitting up, I grab the parchment and books from my bag. “Well I have to go to practice, I’ll see you at dinner.” Hao pats my leg before getting up and leaving.
It takes the next two hours to finish the two papers I had due and when I’m done I get up, nearly falling over from losing feeling in my legs. Putting my bag in my room, I go out to the Great Hall. Alice waves at me from the Hufflepuff table and I grin, sitting down with them. “You’re actually sitting with us for once?” Hanna asks, innocently blinking her eyes at me. “Are you drunk?” I ask, looking at her disheveled clothes. “No, I’m pretty.” She giggles and continues eating. “How long did you guys stay at the Ravenclaw dorms?” They’d left this morning and something told me they’d been there all day. Nina shrugs as I put some food on my plate. “So I have something to tell you guys. Don’t be surprised okay?”
