Monsta X Series

chapter 5

The note that Minhyuk had gotten from Vernon asked you out on a second date. You read it as soon as you got to your room for the night, having mixed feelings about it.
-Y/n- if you are free this Friday at 8 o’clock meet me by the front gates at that time. –Vernon.
You reread his scrawled handwriting and sighed. You had no choice but to meet him and at least thank him for not arresting Minhyuk.
When Friday morning rolled around, you sat up in bed, rubbing the sleep from your eyes. You sighed as you remembered you had a date tonight. It’s not that you weren’t excited, Vernon was very sweet. It was the fact that he wasn’t Minhyuk. You were starting to realize suppressing your feelings for him would be harder than you had initially thought.
You got up and dressed, meeting Minhyuk in the kitchen.
“Why do you look so sad today?” he asked as you poured your coffee and mumbled a good morning.
“I just don’t feel like going out tonight” you explained. Inwardly Minhyuk smiled but he tried his best to look concerned.
“Just make it a short night, but you know you should go out” he shrugged. You mumbled once more and pouted. He did what he could as far as passing along the note went, but if you were staring to not like Vernon, that wasn’t his fault.
Well, mostly not his fault.
“Feel like swimming in the pond again before you go?” Minhyuk joked, trying to take your mind off of your night. You chuckled.
“No, but thank you. I had a nice time yesterday. I want to do that again”
“Maybe Vernon’s house has a pond too” Minhyuk shrugged.
“It doesn’t.” you said simply.
The silence hung in the room as Minhyuk tried not to look happy.
“I would like to stop in to town and see the guys there. I’m nervous if anyone we know got arrested.” You voiced a growing concern.
“Good idea” Minhyuk said. He had no way of hearing whether someone had been arrested or not, unless someone decided to make the trek to the house. No one had, and he had been hopeful that that was a good sign.
Walking into town a few hours later, you had a bag full of your mother’s vintage tea pots to sell for bail money, just in case someone had gotten arrested. You had never been partial to these teapots and wondered what made your mother collect them over all these years. In another bag, you had a change of clothes, in order to get ready for your date later.
Knocking on Shownu’s door you waited as Changkyun answered.
“Hey, is everyone safe from last night?” you asked, before even getting in the front door.
“Not so loud” Changkyun said looking around the crowded street as he closed the door behind the two of you.
“And no. Everyone made it home” he answered your question. You let out a sigh of relief, but was still planning selling these ugly tea pots.
“I see you brought something to sell just in case. You have such little faith in us” he smiled, and opened the bag you were carrying. As he looked inside he realized it was nothing of interest and gave up.
“Are they taking bribes again?” you asked the second question that had been on your mind as well.
“As of yesterday they were, but with the meeting being broken up last night I’m not sure they are anymore.”
“I don’t know if I am brave enough to try my luck” you shook your head.
“I am meeting Shownu in town later. I can take them” Changkyun offered, taking a seat back on the couch where you assumed he had been before you and Minhyuk arrived.
“I’m going into town later too, but I don’t think I will have time to sell these” you voiced your thoughts aloud as you took a seat next to Changkyun.
“Why are you going into town later and not now?” Changkyun asked you, confused.
“She had a date with that guard” Minhyuk filled him in on how he had been almost arrested at gun point he night before. Changkyun raised his eye brows and whistled when Minhyuk had finished.
“You need to marry this guard if he keeps us out of trouble like that” Changkyun laughed and shook his head. You and Minhyuk exchanged quick glances and looked away.
When night time had rolled around, you helped Kihyun get dinner ready for everyone before you headed to the bathroom to get yourself ready. You double checked your hair and makeup in the mirror before heading out into the kitchen.
Minhyuk sat there with Changkyun finishing up dinner and chatting in low voices. They ceased what they were talking about when you entered and Minhyuk looked you up and down. You slowly twirled, giving him a full view to make sure everything was in place.
“Look good?” you asked. Minhyuk looked away and nodded.
“Thanks” you said and waved good bye to Changkyun as you exited. Minhyuk didn’t say anything else, but he watched you as you left. He stared at the door for a moment after it had closed behind you.
“Could you make it any more obvious?” Changkyun laughed as he punched Minhyuk’s shoulder.
“I don’t know what you are talking about” he brushed it off.
“It’s alright I get it! y/n looks good in that dress” Changkyun teased. Minhyuk shook his head, and held back his laughter.
“It hugs her curves and we all know she has a really cute butt…”
“And now you are done talking” Minhyuk said punching Changkyun on the shoulder in return.
Someone is getting flustered…” Changkyun persisted.
Someone will get stabbed if they continue” Minhyuk joked back, but Changkyun shut up anyways. He kept looking sideways ta Minhyuk, causing them both to laugh again.
Walking to the front gate, you waved as you got closer and saw Vernon standing there waiting. He was surrounded by what appeared to be a few friends. You walked over to them shyly as he introduced you. They all dressed in what appeared to be very expensive clothing, and you felt out of place. You had to remind yourself, you used to be one of them.
“We were going to have a get together at my place, if that is alright with you?” Vernon asked.
“Of course it is alright with her! Has she seen the place?” an older guy you learned was called Seungcheol said as he began walking towards a line of town cars, just like the one that had picked you up not too long ago.
“Meet you guys there” Vernon said as he guided you to one of the last cars.
“I hope you like my friends. I have talked about you before so they were pretty anxious to meet you” he told you as he opened the car door and followed in behind you.
“I hope I don’t disappoint” you smiled.
“You won’t” he grabbed your hand and squeezed it briefly. It was a sweet gesture, but it felt unnatural to you.
“Oh, thank you for letting Minhyuk return home last night” you told him before you forgot to mention it once more.
“No problem. I was surprised to see him out in that area” Vernon began. You listened intently preparing to choose your words carefully.
“He has a friend out that way he was visiting. Lost track of time, I’m sure. He seems to be in the wrong place at the wrong time a lot”
“Well, don’t tell anyone I told you, but there was a rebellion meeting out in that area last night” he looked sideways at you. It seemed like he was trying to impress you with this inside information.
“Oh… really? I thought there was no such thing as a rebellion anymore?” you asked. You wanted him to think you were as ignorant of the rebellion as possible.
“They are small, but they still try to resist for some reason” Vernon shook his head. It was like he didn’t know why the small group of the resistance was still fighting anymore. You were suddenly not liking this side of him. You hummed in response, not sure how to respond.
You had driven through the set of gates at Vernon’s place and drove to the front steps. His friends cars had arrived already and they were filing out of them. It appeared as though they were heading to the back yard.
Vernon got the door of the town car, and escorted you up the front steps.
“What a true gentleman” Seungcheol joked as he saw Vernon walking you up the stairs.
“I bet you don’t get treatment like that in the slums?” the girl Seungcheol was with asked you. You were taken aback by her words.
“Mostly there are no steps to be escorted up” you responded. You didn’t know what else to say. His friends were seeming to become snobbier the more you talked to them.
You and Vernon followed them to the chairs that were on the back porch. You were getting to know each of his friends in turn.
Seungcheol worked as a guard with Vernon but he was a higher rank. Jeonghan was going to school for some high paying career. Joshua was inheriting his father’s successful business. The girls that accompanied all of them came from well-bred families as well. You were enjoying yourself listening, when the conversation was directed at you.
“So, y/n, where did you grow up? It certainly doesn’t seem like you are from the slums” Jeonghan asked.
“I grew up a few towns away. This place reminds me of my childhood home actually” you gazed up at Vernon’s family mansion that you admired so much every time you looked at it.
“Then why do you spend so much time in the slums?” the girl who accompanied Seungcheol asked. She held her hands up like it didn’t make sense at all. Yom reminded yourself, to her it probably didn’t.
“I have good friends there” you told her honestly. They laughed but stopped quickly when they saw you weren’t kidding.
“Tell me the truth…” the girl continued.
“Does it smell as bad as I would think?” she asked. You shook your head and crinkled your eyebrows. It was like she had near been there.
“It doesn’t smell there, but the people smell, I heard. They do manual labor all day, so I can see why” Jeonghan added.
“No one smells any different there” you shook your head when an idea dawned on you.
“You haven’t ever been to the slums, have you?” you asked. This conversation was beginning to put a bad taste in your mouth.
“Only when we need to arrest someone” Seungcheol joked. These got laughs from the rest of the group, but you didn’t find this very funny.
While you were doing your best to get along with Vernon’s friends, Minhyuk paced the sitting room at Shownu’s place. Changkyun would glare at him every few times Minhyuk blocked his view of the television.
“Pacing and blocking me from watching my show isn’t going to make y/n home any sooner” Changkyun finally told Minhyuk.
“There is nothing else I can do” Minhyuk sat down feeling defeated. He rubbed his palms into his eye sockets. He wished he could just fall asleep until you returned. He stood up and began pacing again, much to the frustration of Changkyun.
Back at Vernon’s house. The conversation had finally turned away from the slums. You didn’t feel like contributing to the conversation much anymore. Vernon tried his best to include you, but he could tell you were not having a good time anymore. When it had begun to get late, town cars were called to take everyone home.
“Here, let me accompany you home” Vernon offered as he got the door for you. You laughed at this.
“I don’t think it would be safest for you to go not the slums this late.” You shook your head and pitied his naivety.
“I’m not in uniform so I think I would be alright” he shrugged his shoulders. You looked at him and the feeling that you lived worlds away was more tangible than ever.
“All the more reason to not go into the slums with me” you turned to enter the car when he pulled you back and kissed you. It was a short kiss, but it took you very much by surprise.
“Good night” you told him as you entered the car and closed the door behind yourself. He tapped on the glass for you to roll down the window.
“The day after tomorrow, there is a party to celebrate my father’s promotion. Be my date?” he asked. You opened and closed your mouth like a goldfish unsure of what to say. Your heart told you to say no, but Vernon smiled.
“I will send a car to your friend’s house to pick you up. We will be having dinner so expect the car around 6.” he said and began to walk back to the house before you could give him your true answer. There was no getting out of this one.
The car pulled away and took you back to the house. You were feeling pretty low as you knocked twice on the door. Minhyuk answered and smiled seeing you returned home before midnight.
“Hey- rough night?” he asked noticing the look on your face.
“Don’t get me started. Let’s just get some sleep” you shook your head and walked towards Hyungwon’s room that you knew was still vacant. Understand, he spent all of his time at home with his wife and new baby.
“Everyone else asleep?” you asked.
“Asleep or in town for the night” Minhyuk informed you as he followed you to the room and closed the door behind the two of you.
“Want me to take the couch?” he asked leaning against the door.
“No. I just- I just feel like being close to you tonight” you admitted. He nodded and walked over pulling back the covers and getting into the bed. He glanced at you and watched as you let your dress fall to the floor. He gulped when he saw your cute lace bra set that you were wearing.
“What are you looking at?” you asked as you glanced back at him while searching for a t shirt of his to change not. You felt like his gaze was burning a hole into your back.
“I just- I’m sorry you seemed to have a bad night” he smiled and leaned forward as you changed into his shirt.
“Just cuddle with me” you said crawling into bed and pressing your bum into him like you liked to do. It was getting more difficult to hide that fact that he liked this position too.
