Chapter 9

-AJ

"I really think we should discard the section where we exploit artists and celebrities. We aren't a gossip magazine. I don't understand why we've been publishing gossip when we should be publishing upcoming fashion trends and art."

"Do you really think we would get any sales if we continue to post about it? People love what we are giving, and it's giving us great profit," her superior opposed.

"But your writers aren't enjoying this. They were hired to write about art, about what they love, interview critics and artist about their work. The articles now do not have any of this. We aren't the same magazine that we were before. They didn't sign up for this."

"If the New York branch doesn't like what we are doing now then they can quit. We don't mind letting a few people go. Our sales are better than ever. I don't care what magazine is delivering at this point. We are finally recovering from the slide we had."

With a sad sigh, Ana nodded and was dismissed from the Director's office.

"I don't know Irene. It would be a huge change."

"And the times have changed, just like you said. These people don't respect the work you do. You deserve something better. "

"You know what, " she walked back into the office," I would like to resign."

"Oh my gosh I can't believe I did it!"

"Well you did, and you can't go back." Irene smiled and handed Ana a slice of pizza.

"It's not like I'm gonna go back." Ana leaned back on the dining chair, her daughter sitting on her lap. "I can't handle that stress anymore."

"Your mom is working too hard." Irene earned a little smile from Lara. "Whoa! You see that, she's not mad at me anymore." She threw her hands up. "Took her a while."

"Yeah, she's good at holding grudges."

"Nuh uh," a little voice spoke up.

"Yes you are," The two women bickered with the little girl. Ana was partially amazed because her daughter was starting to speak a little more. Even if she couldn't really pronounce her
vowels correctly or her r pronunciation.

"I'm tired." Lara rubbed her eyes.

"And that's our cue, I'll go take her to her room and come back to help you clean up, yeah?" Ana offered.

"Alright, then we will talk about that job offer"

With a nod Ana carried Lara to her room and helped her get ready for bed.

"Mama?"

"Hm?" Ana sat at the foot of Lara's small bed.

"Can you show me some pictures of my Dada before I sleep?"

"Okay baby," She sighed and gave her a tight smile as she took out her phone "Here, don't stare at it too long. It can hurt your eyes. I don't want you using glasses like me." Ana tucked her in and sat closer to her daughter.

"When can I see him?" She looked up at her mother.

"I don't know baby. I really don't know."

It took Lara a few minutes to fall asleep. Once she was sure that her daughter wouldn't wake, Ana quietly left the room and went back to the dining room.

"So are you ready to work for me?"

"Hell yeah."

"Great, follow me." Irene clapped her hands and walked to her studio. She reached for her laptop and opened it up. "That means I can finally tell you what I'm working on and give you your first task."

"So soon?"

"Yes honey, we are ready to launch this project. All I need is for you to help me spread the news in all media plat forms and write beautiful articles for me."

"Wait don't I need to sign anything before we start."

"We'll do it tomorrow at work. I just want to fill you in because we have a meeting tomorrow with some managers."

"Oh, okay."

"I'm filming a show. A reality show, where I take a group of famous idols and let them learn and explore cultures other than theirs."

"Wait so I'm writing about celebrities? Again?"

"Hear me out, I'm going to be the MC and show them different cultures and stuff. It isn't gossip. Think about it. We take these people who know almost nothing about cultures like ours and they will spread good words. People will see the beauties that lay in our countries."

"Hm, I guess it does sound nice."

"So, they're going to be taking place in the melting points of cultures. New York and Los Angeles. From there we would see if we are allowed to take them out to other places."

"Okay, that means I have to interview them right?"

"Yes, you do."

"What about Lara? I can't just leave her with her grandparents every time we travel. We are going to miss each other."

"She does start school soon?"

"Yeah, pre-k, oh my gosh."

"We'll start in New York, you won't be leaving her. If anything, we work something out."

"Alright."

"Great. Nice having you on board."

The next morning, Lara was dropped off at her grandparent's apartment. Ana and Irena had spent the previous night discussing the project and talking about the guest in the show. Now they were ready to meet the managers of this group they were to film with.

"Remember let me do the talking and if they ask you anything, answer politely."

"Jeez, yes, I know how to handle South Koreans okay. I lived there for sometime remember?"

"Funny. Now, business face."

"Okay okay."

Irena had mentioned that it was a South Korean boy group. Was Ana nervous about it? Yeah she was. She feared that it would be the one her ex boyfriend was in, but she also knew Irena wouldn't put her in such position. Plus, they're always too busy to do promotions anywhere but Asia.

"Hello, I'm the CEO, Ms. Arias. I'm glad to be seeing you today. It's an honor to be working with your boys. They are here right?"

"Thank you, I apologize that they aren't here yet. We didn't think traffic would be crazy at this time," a lady, who Ana figured she would be one of the assistants for the other company, said.

"We are in New York after all," Irena chuckled.

Soon enough the doors of the meeting room opened and a few body guards walked in with the people they were expecting. Well, the ones Ana was told of. The managers, not the actual boy group. Following them, a group of seven young boys walked in. They all bowed as they saw Irena and the other staff. They stood in front of their assigned seats. Ana knew this group. She recognized them, but she never heard of them when she was back in South Korea. Irena did mention that this group had recently debuted. Ana recalled seeing them when she went out for lunch in a Korean restaurant she went.

"Sorry we are late." One of the few tall ones spoke in broken English. "1,2,3, Come and get it, GOT7." The other six followed his lead and bowed. They sat down.

Irena smiled at them and welcomed them."Let's start this meeting then."
