Winter Sorrow

Winter Sorrow

Snow fell from the cloudy sky. The chilly air pierced through his clothes. Jungkook strolled down the busy street. His hands buried in his pocket. His thick scarf snugly wrapped around his neck. His cheeks flushed. He exhaled. A whiff of clouded breath puffed out. Christmas was coming, love is in the air with streets filled with colorful flashing lights. Many couples could be seen from every corner, holding hands, laughing, smiling. Jungkook averted his eyes to the ground, unable to stand to see the happiness that only reminds him of his lonely heart. He was on his way to the dorm after practicing for another extra hour. Earlier, he had practiced with Taehyung but since he wanted to touch up on a few dance moves alone, he insisted he goes back to the dorm without him. As much as he wanted to continue to practice, he kept receiving texts and calls from his Hyeongs, ordering him to return home. The night was still young, people were still bustling out on the streets. Had it been Hoseok, Jimin or Taehyung, surely, things would’ve been different. But perhaps that’s the downside to being the maknae.

Jungkook continued down the street at a leisurely gait, passing by many shops and restaurants, his mind aimlessly wandering. Then, he came to a halt. He sniffed. He turned and walked up to a glass window, his hands splayed on the cold surface. The tip of his nose flattened. He licked his lips. Before him was a magnificent display of assorted chocolates: brittles, toffees, truffles, nuts and chews and many more. Its brown, glossy, milky, soft texture melting his very own heart. The chocolatey scent filled his nostril. Oh how he wish he could buy a box. Song Si’s Chocolates was a growing popular brand. Citizens raved at how delicious it is. Jungkook took a step forward toward the wide open door when Jin’s voice came crashing down. You must save your save your money. Don’t spend it on pointless things. Jungkook cursed himself. Is it worth spending money on expensive chocolates when you could easily buy cheap ones that are probably just as satisfying? Disheartened, he started to head back home, when a couple came out of the store.

“Thanks for the chocolates, honey,” she said.

“Anything to make you happy,” he smiled. “Here, why don’t you try it now?”

He opened the box and fed her a piece of chocolate.

“Mhmm, it’s delicious! You’re really are the best!”

The man wrapped his arm around her shoulder, planted a kiss on her forehead and walked off into the street. At that moment, Jungkook pictured himself in a similar scenario.

“Thanks, Hyung,” he said as they walked out of the store.

“Aaah, anything for my Kookie,” Jimin nuzzled. He took a piece of chocolate out of the box, then hooked his arm around Jungkook’s neck. His face only an inch away, feeling his breath on his lips. “Wanna, try some?”

He nodded.

“Close your eyes.”

He willingly obliged, grinning. He opened his mouth, ready to bite into that sumptuous chocolate. But instead to his great surprise, he felt a peck on his cheek and…

Jungkook shook his head. Jimin would never treat him in such a way, at least not anymore. Before, he never acknowledged any of his Hyung’s advances. He wasn’t sure how to deal with such overwhelming affections, to be treated in a way with thousands of people watching him. But now, he could care less what other people think of him. He finally came in terms with his feelings and grew to accept and love the affections Jimin gave, but, it was too late. Couldn’t Jimin have waited a while longer? Whenever he now showed any form of affections, those affections weren’t reciprocated. What happened to the guy that once was obsessed for his love? Where is he? Jungkook sighed. He placed his hand over his chest, gripping at the sharp pain that gashed through his heart. Jimin’s feelings now lied elsewhere. He made his way back home, wishing he had the old Jimin back.
