Just One Day (BTS)

Episode 9: Never Forfeit the Game

“What a lovely way to end my first week at Cherry Falls,” I say as I shoulder my satchel.

“What do you mean?” Taehyung asks, walking a little faster to catch up with me.

“The prospect of midterms around the corner,” I reply dryly.

“Don’t think about those,” says Jungkook, throwing an arm about my shoulders. Taehyung narrows his eyes at him. I shrug off his arm.

Taehyung sighs loudly. “I have to study for those.” He sounds mournful.

“Dude, just chill!” Jungkook exclaims, smacking his arm.

“Easy for you to say,” Taehyung retorts.

“Guys!” I utter. They both fall silent. Gosh, it’s been a whole week of this now. What is their problem?

“Don’t forget to come watch the game tonight!” Jimin calls, running past us.

“We do have tickets,” I reply with a grin.

“Cheer me on,” he adds before he disappears.

“What does he think we’re going to do, cheer for the other team?” Jungkook says disgustedly.

“Is someone jealous of Jimin having a fan?” Taehyung teases.

“What fan?” he asks.

“Who, me?” I question, pointing to myself. “I haven’t even seen him play yet,” I add, “He must be really nervous.”

“You worry too much,” Jungkook says.

“Better than not worrying at all,” says Taehyung, adding under his breath, “Especially about the things that matter.” I’m not sure if Jungkook heard that last part, because he just shrugs.

“Anyway, Tae, you’re still coming round mine later so we can walk to the game?” says the brown haired guy.

“Yeah,” he says enthusiastically.

The three of us walk out of the school gates, the autumn leaves gathered in little piles all around us. I’ve been walking home with Jungkook and Taehyung most days this week, since we live near each other, being Jungkook’s next door neighbour as well. Plus Jungkook always waits for me so we can walk to school together every day, meeting Taehyung on our way to school.

“Bye, then!” says Taehyung, giving an energetic wave as he turns down his street.

“See you later!” Jungkook agrees.

“Bye, Eun Ha!” Taehyung adds.

“Bye,” I say with a laugh, waving back.

“Yeah, bye!” Jungkook yells.

“Have you been to school games before?” I ask him as we continue on our walk home.

“Yeah, every one so far,” he replies, “So that’s, like, two.”

“It’s a shame Jimin couldn’t play yet,” I muse.

“Why you always talking about Jimin?” Jungkook questions.

“I could talk about Taehyung instead,” I suggest brightly, laughing slightly as I think of Taehyung’s antics. He really is something-

“No, no,” Jungkook says, waving his hands, “I spend enough time with that alien as it is.”

“Alien?” I frown, adding, “Have you always been friends?”

“Best friends since kindergarten,” he answers stoutly.

“That must be nice,” I say.

“Why, don’t you have a best friend?” he asks.

“It’s complicated,” I reply with a shrug.

“Anyway, we’re leaving for the game at quarter to six,” he says as we reach our houses.

“Alright, see you later,” I respond, my hand already on the door handle.

“Don’t study!” he says sternly.

I simply raise an eyebrow at him as I open my front door.

“Bye, Jungkook,” I say as I go inside.

When quarter to six rolls around, I’m sitting in the living room with my phone, having had a shower and changed out of my uniform. I adjust my glasses and go into the hallway to put my converse on. I hear recognisable voices outside the door.

“Hey, what are you doing?” Taehyung demands, his voice slightly muffled by the door.

“We’re going to the game right?” Jungkook says.

“Yeah, but whose house is this?”

I smile as I open the door to reveal a grinning Jungkook and a confused Taehyung.

“Bye, mom!” I call.

“I’ll pick you up at eight, have fun!” she responds. I close the door behind me and start walking.

“Hey, Eun Ha,” says Jungkook, walking beside me.

“Hi, again,” I chuckle. We glance back at Taehyung who is standing still and looking from me to my house to Jungkook’s house.

“I didn’t know you lived here!” Taehyung says in shock.

“Yeah, I moved in on the weekend,” I reply, “Come on, we should get going.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?” he demands.

“You really think I’d just give out my address?” I utter.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”He turns to Jungkook. The brown haired boy just shrugs.

“I didn’t know it was important,” he says.

“Anyway, who’s excited for the game?” I ask enthusiastically. Taehyung grins suddenly and runs to my side, the three of us beginning to chat about basketball and various things as we make our way back to the school.

“Let’s sit over here,” Jungkook suggests, “We’ll have a good view from here.”

“Excited?” Taehyung asks with a grin.

“I’ll get snacks,” Jungkook says suddenly, rushing off.

Taehyung sits down next to me on the bleachers, and the autumn air is already beginning to feel cool. I fiddle with the sleeves of my white sweater as I stare out over the court. I spot Jimin who waves at me. I can sense his nerves as I wave back. Impulsively, I stand up and make a heart with my arms.

“Park Jimin!” I yell. He laughs, catching the attention of Yoongi and Hoseok. They both look up and wave at me.

“Park Jimin!” Taehyung joins in, cutely making a heart. Jimin wrinkles his nose. I chuckle, sitting back down and tapping Taehyung’s arm to get him to sit down next to me.

“Let the game begin,” Jungkook says mysteriously as he returns, taking a seat next to Taehyung, his arms full of snacks.

“Any for me?” I ask, peering over. He tosses a packet of strawberry laces at me. I tear it open and Taehyung and I begin to share it.

“Hey, Eun Ha,” says Wonwoo, taking a seat next to me. Even though he’s out of school, he is still wearing a collared shirt under a striped sweater, though he does wear black skinny jeans.

“Hi, Wonwoo,” I reply, offering him a strawberry lace.He shakes his head.

“Sorry about math club being cancelled on Wednesday,” he says. Jungkook sniggers.

“It’s okay,” I reply.

“We can’t meet for another week because of midterms,” he adds, sounding rather put out.

“Don’t even talk about midterms,” Jungkook says loudly.

“It’s starting!” Taehyung says excitedly, grabbing my arm. I grin and watch as the basketball game commences.

I keep my eye on Jimin throughout the game. He’s really talented; so quick on his feet, though not as fast as Yoongi. Man, that skinny guy can really run. Hoseok is also pretty fast, with incredible reflexes, easily jumping to block the opposing players. There are five members on each team, and the remaining two from our school are a lean guy with long chestnut hair tied back in a ponytail and a lanky guy with a mop of dark brown hair.

The whistle shrieks when it’s time for a break. I cast my eyes over the bench where the players have flopped down. A very sweaty Jimin throws me a grin. I wave back. That’s when I notice that there are only five players present from our school.

“Aren’t there normally reserves?” I question.

“Huh?” Taehyung utters.

“You know, like… spares?” I ramble.

“Usually there are,” Wonwoo answers me, “But half the team are sick.”

“Did they eat something bad?” Jungkook jokes.

“It’s flu season,” Taehyung points out.

Jungkook nods. “Even Yoongi’s got something,” he says, and we look over at the small guy who looks like he’s trying not to eject his lungs. Jimin quickly hands him a bottle of water and Hoseok is swift to drape a hoodie over him.

“That’s not really fair on our team,” I say, frowning.

“I know, right,” Wonwoo agrees.

“Since when did you take an interest in school sports?” Jungkook demands. Wonwoo throws him a look.

“Since when did you take an interest in me?” Wonwoo retorts, raising an eyebrow. Jungkook scrunches up his face. Taehyung laughs loudly.

“Anyway, game’s back,” I say as the whistle goes again. The players run out onto the pitch and continue the game. My hands are starting to feel cold so I can’t imagine how cold the players must be, even though they’re running around.Jimin’s breath leaves his body in little clouds and Yoongi’s small nose is bright red in the chill air.

Then, as the lean boy with a chestnut ponytail approaches an opponent with the ball, Yoongi yells for him to pass. But the other player, a bigger, broader guy, advances quickly. The lean boy takes his eyes off his opponent for only a minute, before he is sent sprawling. Two bodies smacked into each other and the orange ball rolls slowly away as the player from our school meets the ground.

A collective gasp erupts from the crowd.I find myself on my feet as the boy cries out.

“Jeonghan!” Wonwoo yells, jumping up and running down the bleachers. The other players along with the coach are gathered around the fallen boy who clutches his ankle. Wonwoo adjusts his glasses and pushes past them, kneeling beside Jeonghan.

“How do they even know each other?” Jungkook asks incredulously.

“Why do you even care about that at a time like this?” I shriek.

Taehyung rises to his feet and pats my arm gently. “He’ll be okay, I think they’ve already phoned an ambulance.”

Wonwoo, having checked that Jeonghan is going to be alright, looks like he wants to kill the player from the other school. The guy in question is currently being reprimanded by the referee.

“They don’t normally play this dirty,” Taehyung tries to reassure me.

“Jimin could get hurt this time,” I fret.

“There you go, talking about Jimin again,” Jungkook says, rolling his eyes.

“Shut up, Jungkook,” Taehyung and I say in unison. We laugh awkwardly.Jungkook gives a sigh, returning to the unfinished sweets from earlier.

The ambulance arrives and the paramedics check out Jeonghan’s ankle. From what I can tell, it’s not broken, but they take him to the hospital anyway. Wonwoo also disappears inside the ambulance, which leaves almost as quickly as it arrives. It seems that the game will continue, but the coaches are in conflict.

“What’s wrong?” I question, having sat back down again next to Taehyung.

“We haven’t got enough players,” Jungkook explains, looking concerned. Yoongi, Hoseok Jimin and the other boy are in deep discussion, evidently trying to figure out how they will finish the game.

“How can we finish the game if we haven’t got enough players!” Our coach demands.

“You could forfeit the game,” the opposing coach suggests slyly.

“Never!”

A girl with straight blond hair and a fringe stands up in the bleachers. I look over to see that Lisa is shrugging off a red leather jacket. She confidently removes a hair tie from her wrist and secures her hair back from her face in a high ponytail. She is wearing a black and white raglan tee, a pair of loose black shorts and Doc Martens.

“I’ll play,” she announces, stepping down from where she and her friends were seated. Namjoon’s eyes are wide as Lisa makes her way down the stands.

“Sorry, what?” says the referee.

“Excellent,” says our coach, taking Lisa by the arm.“We have five players, now.”

“What is she doing?” Jungkook asks incredulously.

“Saving the game,” says Taehyung.

Jimin and Hoseok are utterly shocked. Yoongi quickly assesses the situation. He nods to the rest of his team as Lisa approaches them. He cheerfully slaps her hand, followed by Jimin, though Hoseok looks away shyly.

“Game’s back on!” declares the referee.

“Pass me some trainers,” Lisa orders, catching a pair that Yoongi tosses to her. Kicking off her Doc Martens, she expertly laces the borrowed pair of trainers.

“Doesn’t she need a school team shirt?” the other coach asks dubiously.

“I think it’s pretty obvious she’s on our team,” our coach says smugly.

“Let’s go!” says Lisa.
