Just One Day (BTS)
Episode 8: Impending Doom
“Eunwoo, this is Eun Ha,” says Jin, gesturing towards me. He addresses a tall and gangly student with black hair.
“Pleased to meet you,” he says, holding out a hand in greeting. I shake it.
“Eun Ha’s a transfer student,” Jin explains through a mouthful of noodles, “She was a top student at her last school.”
“Impressive,” says Eunwoo, “I suppose a teacher recommended that you join?”
I nod in response.
“He’s the president of the Academic society,” Jin says, nodding at Eunwoo.
“Can you please not talk with your mouth full?” Eunwoo complains.
Jin swallows. “Sorry,” he says sheepishly.
“Let’s begin this meeting,” Eunwoo says loudly, catching the attention of the whole room.
Jin gestures for me to sit down next to him at the side of the classroom.
“You may all begin eating your lunch if you wish,” Eunwoo continues, “I have a few points to discuss.”
I glance around the room to see that most of the students wear Prefect badges, apart from a few freshmen including Wonwoo who talks quietly with a pretty girl with long hair.
“Midterms are coming up,” says Eunwoo, earning groans from the whole room.
“You mean our impending doom,” one student remarks. He is a short boy with light brown hair and a dramatic expression.
Eunwoo rolls his eyes.
“Yes, thank you, MJ,” he says.“Anyway, after the midterm results, we will begin our personal tutoring scheme.”
The students begin to murmur amongst themselves.
“Who will we be tutoring?” MJ asks.
“Same as last year, MJ,” Eunwoo says irritably, “Other students. You will each be assigned a student, most likely in your year group, to tutor for one or more subjects that they are struggling with. Are any of you objecting to that?”
The students reply “no” in response.
“The idea is that you will tutor someone who is in your classes for those subjects,” the tall guy explains, “So that you won’t be taking too much time away from your own studies. I have been speaking to the freshman and sophomore Heads of year, who have already identified students in need of tutors.”
“I suppose all this is to make our resumes look good?” MJ pipes up again.
“You may think of it that way,” Eunwoo says, shaking his head.“I think the whole point is that we’re helping our fellow students?”
“How lovely,” says Jin. I glance at him, not sure if he’s being sarcastic or not, but he shoves more noodles in his mouth so it’s impossible to tell.
“Does anyone have anything to add?” the president of the Academic society asks. “Not you, MJ,” he snaps.
“What do you think of that, then?” Jin asks me.
“It sounds like a good idea,” I say.
“Any idea who you’ll be partnered with?” he questions, picking at one remaining noodle with his chopsticks.
“No,” I reply, “Seeing as I haven’t really met that many students yet.”
“Well, of course,” he says. “Are you enjoying Cherry Falls so far?”
“Yes,” I answer, “I like it here.”
“That’s good,” Jin says with a smile. “Fancy a game of chess?”
“Is that what you guys do for fun?” I joke.
“Yes, is that a problem?” Jin asks, faking an angry tone. He doesn’t manage to actually look annoyed; he smiles too much.
“No, I like chess,” I laugh. Jin looks pleased.
“I think MJ is still trying to beat his record with the rubix cube,” Jin says, glancing over at the chatty boy who has Eunwoo and a bunch of other students gathered around, one guy timing him as he fiddles with a rubix cube.
“You’ll never beat that record,” Eunwoo remarks. “Jisoo, did you want to discuss the physics assignment?” He turns to a girl with long wavy hair.
“Yes, if that’s okay,” she says, going over to a desk on the other side of the room and sitting down. Eunwoo grabs a file from his bag and goes to sit by her.
“Yeah, it’s fine,” he replies, “We’re partners, after all.Which part was it?”
The two begin talking and looking over their notes.
“Are you any good?” Jin asks, returning with a chess set.
“Probably not,” I laugh.
“Then I’ll beat you,” he says with a grin.
“As long as you play fairly,” I reply, sitting down across from him.
“Right, let’s begin.”
***
“Wow, you’re not bad,” he says as we finish the game.
“I lost,” I utter. I raise an eyebrow at him.
“You are younger than me,” he says with a shrug, “And it wasn’t an easy win, by all means.”
I smile.
“So, do you guys just hang out here and do homework?” I ask, glancing around the room.
“Yeah, mostly,” says Jin, “It’s kind of nice.”
“It seems nice,” I reply. “I guess I’m a member now.”
“Yeah,” he says with a grin, “Welcome to the Academic society. You’re still up for tutoring, right?”
“Yeah, sure,” I say quickly, not wanting to back out now. It’s not like I have much else better to do. Besides, I know that discussing the work with someone else will help me own revision, even if it’s explaining everything all over again.
“Good, I’ll make sure Eunwoo puts your name down,” he says. “We’re trying to get as many people up for it as we can.”
I nod.
“Well, there’s not much of our lunch break left,” says Jin, glancing at his watch, “You can probably go now, if you want.”
“Oh, really?” I say.
“Yeah, go meet your friends or just get some fresh air before next class,” he says.
“Alright,” I agree, “Thanks, Jin.”
“No problem,” he replies, “If you ever want to ask me about anything, I’ll most likely be in the library.”
“I’ll probably be there, too, to be honest,” I laugh, thinking of what I was like at my last school.
“I’ll see you soon, then,” he says.
“Bye, Jin,” I say with a smile as I walk towards the door.
“Eun Ha,” says Eunwoo, his voice stopping me in the doorway.I turn to look at him. “Thank you for joining us today,” he says, “I hope it’s not too soon for you to tutor someone, I know you’ve only just transferred here.”
“Oh, no,” I say, “It’s fine. It’ll be after midterms, anyway.”
“Yes,” he answers, “Well, okay, that’s good.”
“I’ll see you all on Thursday, then,” I say. He nods.
“No, MJ, that card trick is overused and painfully obvious,” Eunwoo yells into the classroom. “Goodbye,” he says with a bow before disappearing back into the classroom.
I walk outside into the cool autumn breeze. The leaves have almost left the trees and piles of leaves twirl around my feet. I wander, looking for the place that Jungkook, Taehyung and I had lunch yesterday. I spot the bench, and spot three boys sitting on it.
“Woah, look out!” a voice yells as a basketball comes straight for my head. A small student pops up and smacks the ball away. “Are you okay?” the guy asks, flexing his skinny wrist. It’s Yoongi. He adjusts his cap and picks up the ball.
“Yeah, I’m fine,” I say quickly, “You must be good at basketball.”
“I am the captain,” he says with a cocky grin.
“Hey, Eun Ha!” Jimin calls as he runs up to me. He slaps Yoongi on the shoulder. “The ball didn’t hit her, did it?” he asks in concern.
Yoongi throws him a look which says “as if”. “No, of course not,” Yoongi states, “I blocked it.”
“Good,” Jimin says, looking relieved. He pats my head gently.
“You coming to the game on Friday?” the sophomore asks, tucking the ball under his arm.
“Yes, Jimin asked me to,” I reply.
“Good one, Jimin,” he says, “She’ll be able to control your idiot mates over there. Their cheering is so infuriatingly loud.”
“I know,” Jimin replies, running a hand through his hair. He glances over at where Jungkook, Taehyung and Rocky are sitting. They have spotted me and are waving.
“Rocky should still join the team,” Yoongi considers.
“I’ve tried asking him,” Jimin said with a shrug.
“Oi!” Hoseok yells, standing with his hands on his hips in the middle of the basketball court.
“What?” Yoongi shouts.
“What’s taking so long?” Hoseok demands.
“Why you yelling?” Lisa bellows from where she sits next to Namjoon on the wall.
Hoseok looks suddenly embarrassed.Lisa laughs.
“Ugh, let’s go,” says Yoongi, bouncing the ball on the ground as he runs back to Hoseok.
“See you later, Eun Ha,” says Jimin, also running to join the others.
I now return Jungkook and Taehyung’s waves, walking over to them.
“How was the Academic society?” Taehyung asks warmly. He shuffles up so I can sit on the end of the bench.
“It was okay,” I reply.
“Bet it was dead boring,” says Jungkook, peering past Taehyung. Rocky pops his head into view.
“Was it interesting?” He asks.
“I suppose,” I say with a shrug. “You know that midterms are next week?”
“Don’t even talk to me about midterms,” Taehyung says, pulling a face.
“Fun, fun, fun!” Jungkook says brightly.
“Not, not, not!” Taehyung corrects, pointing at him.
The bell chimes.
“Let’s go to class, then,” says Rocky.
