Just One Day (BTS)

Episode 7: Academic Society

“Did someone knock the door, Eun Ha?” my mom asks. I’m standing in the living room in front of the mirror fixing my hair. I adjust my glasses.

“I think so, mom,” I call, “I’ll get it. I have to go in a minute, anyway.”

“Okay, Eun Ha,” she replies from upstairs.

I smooth down my blazer as I go to the front door. Unlocking it, I see a grinning Jungkook.

“Oh, hi, Jungkook,” I utter, a smile appearing on my face.

“Eun Ha,” he says cheerfully, “Are you ready to leave for school? I thought, seeing as we walk the same way…”

“Yeah, sure,” I reply. “Let me just put my shoes on.”

“Take your time,” he says.I stuff my feet into my shoes and buckle them up quickly. I grab my bag from where it sits at the bottom of the stairs. “Bye, mom!”

“Bye, Eun Ha,” she calls, “Who was at the door?”

“Jungkook!” I yell up the stairs, “We’re walking to school now!”

“Alright, have a good day!”

I bet she’ll interrogate me later…

“Let’s go,” I say, closing the door behind me.

“Had a good day yesterday, then?” he asks.

“Yeah, it was fun,” I consider.

“School was fun?” he asks incredulously. He tugs on his bag straps as we walk.

“I bet you like school, really,” I tease.

“Are you kidding me?” he utters. But he grins. “It’s okay.”

“You don’t seem to find it so hard, though,” I say tentatively. Being the same age, Jungkook is easy to talk to, even if he’s a bit stupid at times.

“No, it’s fine,” he says breezily. He looks at me. “Are you really going to join the Math Club?”

I give a brief laugh.

“No, I just said that to look cool,” I say, narrowing my eyes at him. “Besides, why do you care if I join Math club?”

“I don’t,” he says quickly, avoiding my gaze.

We walk in silence for a few minutes.

“So, video games,” he says.

“What about them?” I ask, smiling slightly.

“Well, I happen to be very good at video games,” he says, “Tae also. So you should definitely hang out with us, sometime.”

“Do I look like a gamer?” I ask in surprise. I know Jungkook has already suggested this to me, but I’m still wondering as to why exactly.

“You don’t look like them,” he says boldly, gesturing to a pair of made up students who walk on the other side of the road. The two wear their plaid skirts dangerously short, with little heels on their school shoes.

“I think that’s a good thing…?” I utter.

“Yes, of course it is,” Jungkook says, “You’re, like, actually cool.”

I look at him.

“As well as pretty,” he adds.

I sigh, feeling a blush come to my cheeks.

“Sorry,” he says awkwardly.

“What for?” I say, hitting his arm, “Being an idiot? Sorry, most people can’t help that.”

“Hey,” he protests, looking injured.

“Just kidding,” I say quickly.

“You better watch it before I steal your glasses and hide them from you,” he says seriously.

My hands go to the pair of glasses on my face.

“I’d never speak to you again,” I say dramatically.

He narrows his eyes at me. “You’re kidding right,” he says with disbelief.

I laugh at his worried expression.

“Hey, guys!” a voice yells, and we are set upon by the ginger alien that is Taehyung.

“Hi, Taehyung,” I say with a grin. The boy honestly looks so pleased to see me.

“How are you, Eun Ha?” he asks, walking beside me on my left.

“I’m fine thank you, how are you?”

“Fantastic, thank you,” he says with a massive smile.

“Nice to see you too, Tae-tae,” Jungkook says sarcastically.

The two chat about video games and such until we reach the school gates.

“Homeroom, let’s go,” Taehyung says enthusiastically, taking the lead.

“Honestly, why is he so happy to be at school?” Jungkook asks out loud.

We enter homeroom a few minutes before the morning announcements are due to start.

“Hi, Eun Ha,” says Jimin. I sit down next to him.

“Hi, Jimin, how are you?” I ask politely.

“You don’t need to be so polite,” he chuckles, “We’re friends, right?”

“Of course,” I say with a smile. I notice that both Jungkook and Taehyung are watching us.

“We’d better shake hands, then,” says Jimin. I take his hand, smiling at the fact that his cute little hand is only marginally bigger than my own. “And don’t make fun of my hands, okay,” he adds sternly.

“I think you have very nice hands,” I say in a serious tone. He grins.

“Why, thank you, so do you,” he says primly. We both laugh.

“You do actually have tiny hands, dude,” Jungkook interjects.

“Don’t be so rude!” says Taehyung, punching him on the arm.

“Ow!” Jungkook whines.

“Yeah, Jungkook, don’t be so rude,” I agree, raising my eyebrows at him. Taehyung catches my eye and he beams at me.

“Good morning, Cherry Falls!” A voice comes on over the speakers. of the students fall silent to listen.

I hope you are all doing well, students, staff and teachers. I have a few announcements. The gardening club is still looking to recruit a few more members, so please consider signing up this week.”

Jungkook and Taehyung exchange a glance before bursting out in silent laughter.

“Music lessons can still be signed up for, see Miss Lee the music teacher if you are interested. Also, the lower school basketball team has a game on Friday, please come to cheer on our team. The Academic society are also offering personal tutors this year, so if you think you need a tutor, please speak to your teachers. On the other hand, if you are a member of the Academic society or thinking of joining, you may also offer your services to your fellow students to help their grades. This will be discussed in your meetings with the Academic society – see a prefect for details.

"Have a great day, and I will talk to you again after lunch. This has been Namjoon, thank you.”

The students begin to chatter again, and Namjoon’s announcements remind me of the tutoring scheme offered by the Academic society. I hope I can find the room at lunchtime; asking Jungkook or Taehyung would be too embarrassing.

“Will you be coming to the game on Friday?” Jimin asks.

“Sorry?” I utter, being pulled out of my thoughts.

“Our basketball game… I’ll be playing,” he says.

“Yes, of course,” I reply, “I’ll come along to cheer; of course I’ll support the team.”

“We’ll be cheering the loudest,” Jungkook says proudly.

“As long as you don’t distract the team,” Jimin says dubiously.

“It’ll be fine,” I say quickly, “I’m sure you’ll play very well.”

“Thanks, Eun Ha,” he replies. “I’m a little bit nervous, actually.”

“Haven’t you played yet?” I ask.

“No, I couldn’t make the last few games because of an injury,” he confesses, “Being a freshman as well… I just hope I play well on Friday.”

“You’ll be fine,” I assure him, “I’ll make really good fan chants.”

“Park Jimin!” Taehyung says enthusiastically, raising his fist as if he were attending a sports match.

“Is really short!” Jungkook adds.

“Hey!” Jimin exclaims, reaching over to hit him.

Jungkook laughs nervously. “I think the bell’s about to go,” he says, standing up and grabbing his bag.

Sure enough, the bell does chime.

“I’ll get him later,” Jimin tells me.

“Just challenge him to basketball,” I suggest.

“Good idea,” he says, holding up one hand. I high-five him.“What class do you have now?”

“Geography,” I answer.

“Aw, I’ve got Physics,” he says, “See you later.”

“Bye, Jimin,” I say as we leave the room and he walks off down the corridor.

“You have Geography?” Taehyung asks.

“Yeah,” I say.

“I don’t, but I can walk you to your class,” he offers.

“Thank you,” I say, knowing I’d be unlikely to find the room otherwise.

“Hey, Taehyung, hurry up!” Jungkook calls. He’s standing a few paces down the corridor, his hand on his bag strap.

“We’re not in the same class,” Taehyung says, confused.

“Ooh, looks like they both want to walk her to class, Yoongi,” a voice remarks. The sophomores on the basketball team, who Jimin sort of introduced me to yesterday, are walking down the corridor. Yoongi wears a backwards cap that clashes with his school uniform and Hoseok is bouncing an orange basketball along as he walks.

“But they can’t both walk her to class,” Yoongi points out in his deep voice. He cracks a smile. He and Hoseok both laugh.

“These freshmen are too cute,” Hoseok says.

“Shut up,” Jungkook grumbles.

“We’re your seniors, I don’t think you’re allowed to talk down to us,” Yoongi points out, patting Jungkook’s cheek as he passes.

“Catch you later, losers,” Hoseok adds with a grin, making a finger-gun a shooting at us.

“Bye, Jungkook,” I say awkwardly, waving at him as Taehyung and I turn to walk down the corridor.

“See you in maths!” Taehyung calls.

The corridors are almost empty as the students rush to their classrooms.

“What classroom do you have geography?” he questions.

“Room 12,” I reply.“But I forgot to get my books from my locker.”

“Let’s go there first, then,” he says.

“You won’t be late for class?” I ask in concern.

“It doesn’t matter,” he replies, “Our lockers are down here.”

We go to my locker and I get out my Geography and Japanese textbooks. I had brought most of my books in yesterday, being able to put some in my locker that I didn’t need until today. I place the heavy books in my bag.

“I’m so sorry,” Taehyung utters as I meet his eyes.

“Taehyung,” I say with a sigh. I turn the key in my locker and place it back in my blazer pocket. “I think you can stop apologising now.”

“I just want to make it up to you,” he mumbles, “I didn’t mean to embarrass you on your first day. Please?”
“I’ll think of something,” I say quickly, just wanting to forget the whole business of having Taehyung literally fall on top of me in the middle of the school corridor.

We turn a corner. I fiddle with the strap of my satchel as we walk.

“Do you like geography?” Taehyung asks conversationally.

“I like learning about the natural side of it,” I reply with a shrug.

“Like volcanoes!” he says enthusiastically.

I nod.

“Yeah, it’s pretty fun, I suppose,” he says. “I just wish we didn’t have to write essays on it.”

“Mm.”

“Are you okay?” he questions, peering at me in concern.

“What?” I utter. “Yeah, I’m fine, Taehyung.”

“You just seemed a little quiet,” he explains.

“No, I’m fine,” I repeat. The Academic society thing is still on my mind, is it really a good idea to join?

“Well, enjoy your second day at Cherry Falls,” he says grandly. “We have arrived at your classroom.”

“Thank you, Taehyung,” I say gratefully, “I hope I can find my way around the school soon.”

“I’ll help you until you find your way,” he offers. We smile at each other.

“Well, I’ll see you in maths,” he says.

“Bye, Taehyung,” I reply.

“Goodbye, Eun Ha.” He seems reluctant, but turns and walks back down the corridor. I enter the classroom and, after speaking to the teacher, take a seat in the front row. Regretfully, there are no other free seats. The class passes dreadfully slowly.

Geography is followed by Japanese, and Japanese is followed by… Maths.

“Eun Ha!” I hear Jungkook yell from down the corridor. Luckily I could remember where my maths classroom is.

“Hi, guys,” I say, approaching him and Taehyung, who stand outside the classroom.

“Hi, Eun Ha,” says the ginger boy. “How have your classes been?”

“Good, thank you, and you?” I reply.

“Why are we so formal?” Jungkook complains before Taehyung can answer. “Let’s just do maths.”

We enter the classroom and I sit between Jungkook and Taehyung again, but we don’t talk much. We hand in our homework, only to receive more.

“Maths is your strongest subject, Taehyung,” says the teacher, “If you enjoy it, maybe you should join the math club.”

Wonwoo twists round in his seat at this suggestion, his expression dubious.

“Maybe,” Taehyung says politely, “Thank you, teacher.”

“Dude, are you kidding?” Jungkook demands as soon as the teacher is out of earshot.

Taehyung scoffs.“Obviously,” he says, though he looks away quickly to avoid his friend’s gaze.

“Um, Wonwoo?” I ask, tapping him on the shoulder. He glances round, adjusting his glasses. He is in the act of putting his notebook back in his bag, the class now over.

“Yes, Eun Ha?” he says.

“Would you happen to know where the Academic society meets?” I ask nervously.

“Sure, I’ll show you,” he replies, “I’m going there now.”

“Thank you,” I say. Duh, of course he knows where they meet! He is in the Academic Society...

“Have fun,” Jungkook says dubiously. “Come on, Taehyung.”

“Do have fun,” Taehyung adds with enthusiasm.

“See you guys,” I say as they leave the room.

“It’s actually just down the corridor,” Wonwoo says as we leave the classroom.

“Oh,” I say, feeling a bit stupid.

“It’s fine,” he says, “Here we are.”

“Eun Ha?” a voice calls.I look up to see a Jin the prefect coming down the corridor.

“Hello, Jin,” I say, feeling more at ease upon seeing someone else I know.

“Academic society?” he asks, stuffing his mouth with the noodles he has evidently bought from the cafeteria. I nod as Wonwoo enters the classroom. Jin swallows and grins at me. “Come on in,” he says.

I take a deep breath before entering the classroom behind Jin, anticipating meeting the school’s elite.
