Just One Day (BTS)
Episode 6: New Neighbours
“Study hall, study hall,” Taehyung sings in his deep voice. He is grinning but looks rather bored as he kicks a scrunched up piece of paper along the floor as we walk.
“Study hall, study hall,” Jungkook’s voice appears behind us mockingly. He pops his head up between us. He mimics the ginger boy in a deliberately squeaky voice. Taehyung hits him over the head. “Eun Ha, save me!” Jungkook whines, escaping from Taehyung and coming to my side.
I sigh as I walk between the two boys.
“Do you have much homework?” Jungkook asks.
“Yeah, some,” I say, “It’s only Monday but I’ve got essays and write-ups-”
“Not due until next week, surely?” he questions.
“I’m not going to leave my homework ‘til late,” I say seriously, “I need to make a good impression with my new teachers.”
“It’s a bit late for me to do that,” Taehyung mumbles.
“Anyway,” I add, remembering, “Rocky needs my Biology notes, and I haven’t written up the experiment yet.”
“You take school too seriously,” Jungkook says, throwing an arm around my shoulders. Taehyung looks at him with narrowed eyes. I shrug Jungkook’s arm off me.
“Maybe you don’t take school seriously enough,” Taehyung suggests.
Jungkook laughs. “You can talk,” he says with a smirk.
“What’s that supposed to mean?” Taehyung demands.
“Guys,” I say tensely.
“Yeah?” They both say, turning to look at me. Oh, so it’s one of those situations… okay. I sigh. “We’re here, aren’t we?”
“Study hall?” the ginger boy asks, “Yeah, we have it in here.”
We have arrived outside the hall where students enter and are sitting down behind desks.
“Let’s sit over here,” Jungkook suggests.A group of students sit in the back corner of the hall, who I can only assume are popular.
“Hi, Eun Ha!” says Rocky, who sits among them.
“Hi, Rocky,” I reply, raising a hand.
“Eun Ha!” an excited Min calls. She sits with a group of girls nearby. One of the girls is leaning over and talking to Jimin, who also sits with the popular students. I wave at Min, but sit down next to Taehyung when he offers me a chair.
Each desk only sits one person, but I’ve got Taehyung on my left and Jungkook in front of me. Rocky turns round in his seat.
“I’ll write up the Biology notes now,” I say, anticipating his question.
“No pressure!” he says quickly, holding up both hands. “But thank you. How has your first day been?”
“Eventful,” I deliberate. “It’s been okay.”
“Okay?” Taehyung and Jungkook question in unison.
“Eun Ha, what’s up?” says Min, rushing over to me. “Seolhyun seems too busy to talk to me right now.”
“Is she the one talking to Jimin?” I question, looking at the girl talking to him, who has long black hair and is wearing bright pink lipstick.
“You know Jimin?” Min asks in surprise. She kneels beside my desk. “He’s on the basketball team.”
“He’s in my homeroom,” I reply.
“That’s pretty cool,” she says, “Have you had a first good day?”
“I have,” I say with a laugh. I’ll be hearing this question a lot today, I think.
“Awesome,” she says happily, “Made any new friends yet?”
“Are you included in that?” I joke, “Yeah, I’ve made a few. Jungkook and Taehyung are in some of my classes, and I know Rocky from Biology.”
“Seems you’ve fallen in with the popular crowd,” a voice remarked. I glance up to recognise the serious-faced Wonwoo from my maths class.
“Oh, hello, Wonwoo,” I say, pleased that I could remember his name.
“Is this seat free?” he asks, gesturing to the empty seat on my right.
“Woah, dude, you can’t sit there!” Jungkook exclaims, having turned round in his chair to look at us.
Both Wonwoo and I stare at him. Min looks embarrassed and even Rocky has turned round with one eyebrow raised.
“Just kidding!” Jungkook laughs, “Can you help me with my maths homework?”
Wonwoo adjusts his glasses. “No,” he says, taking a seat next to me.
“Min-ya!” the dark haired girl a few rows in front calls Min.
“Yeah, Seolhyun,” Min says quickly, standing up. “Seolhyun wanted me to sit by her in study hall,” she explains to me, “I’ll see you later!”
Min rushes back to her friend.
“They’re all like that,” Wonwoo remarks.
“Hmm?” I glance at him.
“Nothing,” he says. “No, Jungkook, I’m not helping you with your maths homework,” he adds flatly, looking at the brown haired boy who has turned around again.
“Fine, fine,” he utters.“Eun Ha?” he asks hopefully.
“I’m busy right now,” I ramble, “Aren’t you good at maths?”
“He’s just lazy,” Taehyung informs.
“Shut up, Tae,” Jungkook says, turning back around in his seat.
“And rude,” Taehyung adds quietly. I hide a smile by pretending to rub my nose. He gets out one of his school books and starts writing.
I consider what homework I have and decide to write up the notes for the Biology dissection. The hall falls into silence, save for a few murmurs between students.I soon finish the brief write up, and turn to my History essay. I sigh as I look at the blank page in front of me. Maybe I’ll do this later. I tap Rocky on the shoulder.
“Yo,” he says, looking round.
“I’ve finished the Biology dissection write-up if you want it,” I say, holding out the piece of paper.
“Yeah, that’s great, thanks Eun Ha,” he says with a grin.
“No problem,” I reply, “I hope we won’t have to do anything like that again.”
“Me too,” he says with a laugh. He turns back to his own desk.
“Are you doing the maths homework?” Wonwoo asks.
“Yeah, I am now,” I answer. He nods.“Did you want to compare answers?” I add.
“If that’s okay,” he says.
“Yeah, it’s fine,” I say with a smile.
We both get on with our work, and I can see that Taehyung is also working on the questions, almost keeping pace with Wonwoo and me.
“Did you finish the maths homework?” Jungkook asks, turning round.
“Nearly,” Taehyung says distractedly.
“Yeah, I just finished,” I say, comparing my answers to Wonwoo.
“Good job,” the dark haired boy says, adjusting his glasses. I self-consciously do the same.
“You might both be wrong,” Jungkook suggests.
“I doubt it,” Wonwoo and I say. We then laugh.
“You know what,” I say suddenly, just to make some kind of point, “I might join the Maths club.”
“Really?” Wonwoo asks, surprised.Jungkook actually looks horrified.
“Mhm,” I reply, then say no more until study hall is over and it’s time to go home.
“See you tomorrow, Eun Ha,” Jungkook says. He and Taehyung both wave as I turn and walk down the corridor towards the front of the school.
“Eun Ha,” Wonwoo calls after me. He runs up to me.
“Yeah, Wonwoo?”
“I was just wondering, what made you want to join Math club?”
“I like maths.”
I blink at him.
He nods, not fully convinced. No, Wonwoo, I just wanted to prove a point to Jungkook, actually. That idiot seems to think that popular people can’t be studious… Ugh, I'm such a nerd.
“Well, I’ll see you in math class tomorrow,” he says, turning to go.
“Wonwoo?” I ask quickly.
“Yeah?”
“Are you in the Academic society?”
“Yeah, why?” he looks confused.
“Oh, it’s just that my History teacher recommended that I join,” I ramble. “I spoke to Jin about it.”
“Oh, right,” says Wonwoo, adjusting his bag strap, “Yeah, I’m the in Academic society. I was also targeted by a teacher.” He chuckles.
“I was just wondering,” I add, “It would be good if I already knew someone there.”
“Makes sense,” he says, “Like, all of the Prefects are members, including Jin. I’ll have to introduce you to Sohye – she’s goes to math club as well.”
“Okay,” I reply, “Is she a friend of yours?”
He hesitates. “Yes,” he answers, his face starting to turn red.
“Well, I’ll see you tomorrow,” I say, trying not to smile too knowingly.
“Yeah, see you,” he says.
I give a wave before turning walking out into the school yard. Most of the students seem to have left to go home already. I recall the route that I walked this morning, and head home.
“Hey, Eun Ha!” a voice calls. I’ve been walking some ten minutes as I turn to see who called my name. It was Jungkook.
“Hi, Jungkook,” I say with a smile as he runs up to me.“Do you live around here?”
“Yeah, just down that way,” he says, pointing to the turning on the left.
“Really?” I ask in surprise, “Me too.”
“So it must have been your family that moved in on the weekend,” he says in realisation. “That’s my house, are we next door neighbors, then?”
He points to the white-walled house next to mine.
“Yep, looks like it,” I reply. “That’s pretty cool.”
“Are you kidding, that’s awesome!” he says enthusiastically, “By the way, did you enjoy the rice cakes?”
“They were from your mom?” I question.
“Yeah, she makes them all the time,” he says with a grin.
“They were delicious, please thank her for me,” I say.
“Will do,” he replies.“Well, I’ll see you tomorrow. You should come over sometime, Tae’s here practically every day after school.”
“Oh, Taehyung?” I say.
“Our favourite alien,” he says with a nod, “I hope you’re good at video games.”
“Not very,” I admit as I climb the steps to my house.
“I’ll have to teach you,” he offers, “Anyway, bye!”
“Bye, Jungkook,” I say with a laugh as I go into the house.
“Who was that you were talking to, Eun Ha?” my mom asks; I can hear her voice coming from the kitchen.
“Jungkook, mom,” I call, locking the front door and taking off my school shoes. I walk through to the kitchen. “He’s our next door neighbour.”
“Does he go to Cherry Falls?” she questions. She takes off her apron and smiles.
“Yeah, he’s in my homeroom and some of my classes,” I reply.
“So, who else did you meet today?” Mom asks me. She is wearing a pair of casual blue jeans with a purple top and her hair is the same dark brown as mine, only shorter.
“Hmm, well, Taehyung is in some of my classes as well,” I say, “I met Rocky in Biology, Wonwoo in Maths and Jimin in homeroom.”
“Did you make any friends that are girls?”
“Mom,” I say, raising an eyebrow. What is she suggesting? I take off my grey blazer and sit down at the kitchen table. “I made friends with a girl called Min, and I also met Lisa who’s a sophomore.”
She nods.“How are you finding Cherry Falls so far?”
“I like it, Mom,” I say with a smile, “I actually really like it.”
