Just One Day (BTS)

Episode 5: Still Life

After learning the structure of the kidney, we all change into white lab coats, plastic gloves and armed with scalpels.Rocky is my biology partner, and his face hasn’t changed from the moment dissection was mentioned; he’s gone whiter than his lab coat. I feel a sneeze coming, so I turn away in hopes to make it discreet. It is not. I sneeze explosively, earning at least five bless you’s from around the room.

“You okay, Eun Ha?” Taehyung asks with a smile.

“Yes, thank you,” I say, embarrassed.

“Dude, are you actually crying?” Jungkook demands. I glance to my left to see Rocky, the kidney on the desk in front of us and a tear escaping his eye.

Rocky sniffs.“No,” he lies.

“We haven’t even cut it open yet,” I say, my eyes widening. “Sorry,” I add quickly, “Do you want me to do it?”

Rocky slides the offensive piece of meat closer to me.

“It’s not like it’s alive,” Jungkook scoffs, slapping Taehyung’s hand away from their sample.

“I just don’t like it,” Rocky mumbles, pulling off his slimy gloves to wipe his eyes.

“Jungkook, please escort Rocky out of the room,” says the teacher, spotting the issue.

Jungkook shakes his head but complies. He takes off his gloves and throws an arm around Rocky’s shoulders. He glances back once to throw Taehyung a disapproving look; Taehyung is holding up the kidney and peering at it intently.

“What was it like being inside a pig?” he asks it.

Rocky and Jungkook leave the room.

“Taehyung?” I say, successfully spilling open my kidney (that is, the pig’s one in front of me, not mine) into two symmetrical halves.

“Yes, Eun Ha?” he replies.

“Why are you talking to a kidney?”

“Why aren’t you?” he shoots back, raising his eyebrows.

“Because it’s dead,” I say, prodding the sample on my desk, “Also it’s just one bit of a pig.”

“You don’t talk to bacon before you eat it?” he questions.

“No…” I throw him a look.

“Neither do I,” he says quickly.

I glance away to hide my smile.

“Alright, class,” says the teacher, “I think we’re about done here.”

I let out a sigh of relief. I peel off my gloves and place them on the desk next to the kidney.

“You know some people eat kidneys?” I say.

“Not as good as bacon,” says Taehyung.“Goodbye, pig’s kidney,” he adds, addressing the brownish organ before placing it down.

“Please wait until all of the samples have been collected in,” the teacher adds, “Before you leave the classroom.”

I shrug off my lab coat, and Taehyung does the same, holding out his hand for mine.He returns them to the cupboard. After the desks are cleaned, the students are quick to leave the room.

“Don’t forget your homework, please!” the teacher calls as we begin to leave.

“Are you okay?” I ask Rocky as he and Jungkook return to fetch their bags.

“Yeah,” he replies.“I just won’t have any notes on the dissection.”

“You can borrow mine,” I offer, “I’ll write them up tonight.Seeing as we’re Biology partners, our notes would be identical anyway.”

“Thanks, Eun Ha,” he says gratefully, “I hope we don’t have to dissect anything else.”

“How about a pig’s eye?” Jungkook laughs.

Rocky’s expression suddenly contains more than just a hint of fear.

“Don’t be mean!” Taehyung says loudly, slapping his friend’s arm.

“Anyway, it’s break now,” Jungkook says cheerfully as we leave the room.

“What have you guys got after break?” Rocky asks as we walk down the corridor.

The only thing I’m wondering right now is how I ended up with a group of boys on my first day. Am I that attractive?

“I have P.E. with you,” Jungkook says, punching him on the arm.

“I have Art,” says Taehyung. The three of them look at me expectantly.

“Oh,” I utter, rummaging in my bag for my schedule. “I have… Art.I guess I’m in your class.” Taehyung looks rather happy with this.

“How convenient,” Jungkook says meaningfully. “Hey, if it’s life drawing class, Eun Ha should be the model.”

Taehyung glares at him before hitting him rather hard.

“Huh?” I say, looking from one to the other.

Rocky laughs nervously. I then realise what Jungkook must have been implying. The models in life drawing class are usually drawn… without clothes…

I laugh sarcastically. “Leave,” I order, pointing down the corridor. I can feel my cheeks beginning to flush with embarrassment. Taehyung says nothing, but Jungkook looks rather scared at my deadly serious expression.

“Yeah, let’s go,” Rocky says quickly, grabbing Jungkook’s arm and running off.

“Sorry about that,” Taehyung mumbles.

“It’s okay, he’s a boy,” I reply, shaking my head. This is the problem with hanging out with boys; if they make any women jokes, it’s extra awkward for you.

“I’m a boy,” he says indignantly, “and I thought it was very rude.” He huffs. “I’ll hit him again later,” he adds.

“It was just a bit awkward,” I reply, just trying to forget about it. “I thought that Namjoon’s radio show was good earlier.”

“Oh, really?” says Taehyung.

The whole school had heard the announcements at the beginning of Biology.

“Does he do any other radio shows?” I question, glad that the previous subject had been abandoned.

“Yeah, he does an hour on Wednesday afternoons,” says Taehyung, “He plays music and stuff; it’s pretty cool.”

I nod.

“What does he talk about in the mornings?” I ask next.

“He just goes over any announcements, but he also reads out students’ emails,” he explains.

“Emails?”

“They write in asking for advice,” says Taehyung, “Namjoon answers people’s questions and stuff.”

“That’s pretty cool,” I say. “I’m guessing it’s all anonymous?”

“You got it,” he replies. “We have arrived at Art,” he adds informatively.

The sign above the door reads Art Room, and only a few students have turned up early.

“Hi, Sehee!” Taehyung calls as he enters the room. A girl is sitting behind a canvas with a paintbrush and palette in her hands. Her long brown hair is held back from her face with a red bandana.

“Hi, Taehyung,” she replies with a smile. She lays down her paintbrush.

“This is Eun Ha,” he says informatively, gesturing to me.

“Hi,” says Sehee, “Did you transfer here?”

“Yeah,” I reply, “Are you an Art student?”

“I try to be,” she says with a laugh, “I just came here early.I literally ran over from English.”

“Ooh, so pretty!” Taehyung exclaims, peering at the painting Sehee is working on. I go over to take a closer look.

The colours are abstract and it’s difficult to tell what the picture is at first. But soon enough I make out a horizon, the pinks and oranges of a sunset, and the wiggly outlines of trees.

“Landscape?” I suggest.

Sehee beams.“I’m glad you could tell,” she says, “My teacher wanted me to do still life.” She makes a face.

“It looks really good,” I assure her.

“Thanks,” she replies, “I think class is starting soon.”

Sure enough, the teacher walks in and Sehee gestures for me to sit next to her. I do so, and Taehyung sits behind us. The teacher explains what we have to do this lesson, and soon leaves us to get on with it.

“Shall I get you an onion?” Taehyung asks me.

I laugh at the ridiculousness of the question, though we have been asked to draw an onion this lesson.

“Yeah, go on, then,” I say. We are now sitting at desks and Sehee had to put her painting to one side. She is focusing on drawing the onion on the desk in front of her but looks thoroughly bored.

“It’s not colorful enough,” she says by way of explanation.

Taehyung returns and places an onion on my head.

“Taehyung,” I say, trying not to move as I know the onion will fall and draw more attention towards me.

“Sorry,” he says, taking it off and handing it to me. “I got you the best one,” he adds, “It’s the roundest.”

“Thank you,” I say, looking rather amused. The ginger boy looks pleased with himself as he studies his own chosen vegetable. “You didn’t save the best one for yourself?” I ask.

“No, I got the weird one,” he says casually, “It reflects my personality.”

“So, I’m extra round?” I question, still twisted round in my seat to look at him.I hold up my onion,

“And small?”

“No, I meant to say that’s the prettiest one,” Taehyung replies. I quickly turn round as my cheeks turn red.

“That’s cute,” Sehee mutters.

I laugh nervously. I get on with the drawing task; making the onion actually look like an onion is harder than it looks.

“Teacher, I’ve finished!” says Sehee, raising her hand.

“Good work,” says the teacher, peering at her drawing, “You can continue your painting in the other art classroom if you wish.”

“Thank you, teacher,” says Sehee, quickly gathering her supplies and carrying her canvas out of the classroom.

“Taehyung, the object of study does not have human eyes,” the teacher says with a sigh.I glance round to see that Taehyung has added eyes to his drawing, which is actually very good.

“They’re not human eyes, they’re onion eyes,” he says matter-of-factly. “Sorry, teacher,” he adds, “I’ll erase them.”

“Very good observational drawing aside from the unnecessary eyes,” the teacher says. “Eun Ha,” she adds, startling me. “Not bad,” she considers, “Add more shadows and further define the lines.”

“Yes, teacher,” I say.

“Hey, Eun Ha,” says Taehyung, tapping me on the shoulder once the teacher has gone back to her desk.

“Hmm?” I turn around to look at him.

“What do you think?” he questions, holding up his drawing.

“Taehyung, it still has eyes,” I state.

“Onion eyes,” he repeats.

“It’s actually really good,” I add.

“Really?” he utters. He looks back at his drawing, and I can tell he doesn’t want to remove the eyes from it.

“You could just do another one,” I suggest, “If you want to keep Mr Onion alive.”

“Mr Onion,” he says with a chuckle, “Yeah, good idea.”

“If you don’t have too much other homework, that is.”

“Ha! Other homework? Art is my second best subject, I’ll do work for that,” he says.

“You seem pretty good at Art.”

“It’s the only subject I can get As in other than maths,” he says with a shrug. “Uh, I mean…”

“It’s okay, Taehyung,” I say quickly, checking that none of the other students had been listening.

The bell chimes.

“Let’s go, then,” he says, packing away his stuff as I do the same.

“What’s now?” I ask.

“Study Hall,” he replies, “Boring!”

“At least I can finish some of my homework,” I consider, shouldering my satchel as I leave the room.

“I have too much homework,” Taehyung complains.“Anyway, it’s this way.”

We turn a corner and head towards the large hall in the middle of the school.
