Just One Day (BTS)
Episode 3: Immature
“Math, math, math-math-math!” Jungkook sings as we head down the maths corridor.
“Ah, Jungkook, Taehyung,” says the teacher. She is small, with a short bob haircut and is wearing a white blouse with a black pencil skirt. “And you must be Eun Ha,” she adds after the two boys enter the classroom.
“Yes…?” I say hesitantly.
“Welcome to Cherry Falls, I hope you’ll do well in my class,” she says.
“No pressure, then!” Jungkook says loudly as he takes his seat in the middle row.
“Where would you like to sit?” asks the teacher.
I look around the room. Two blonde girls sit by some sporty looking boys in the back row, and it’s clear that the nerds are in the front. It would be safe just to sit next to the boy with dark hair who is wearing a pair of round wire rimmed glasses.
“Sit here!” Jungkook says, waving an arm in the air.
“Alright,” says the teacher, “And let’s begin this class.”
“Taehyung, move up,” Jungkook commands, giving his ginger friend a shove. Taehyung throws him a look before moving up one seat along the row.I sit down between them and get out my books.
“Today we will be learning to use the quadratic equation,” the teacher begins, and I notice the glasses boy in front of me already writing something down in his notebook.
“So, do you like maths?” Jungkook asks. He’s very chatty.
“Yeah, I mean, it’s okay,” I ramble, tucking my hair behind my ear.
“Cool earring,” says Taehyung, looking at the black square earring that adorns my left earlobe.
“Oh, thanks,” I reply, smiling slightly before turning back to my notebook.Taehyung fiddles with his own earring for a second, which is shaped like a triangle.
“So, does anyone already know the quadratic equation?” the teacher asks.
“B plus or minus the square route of minus b squared minus four a c all over two a,” I mutter under my breath. The glasses-wearing boy glances around, impressed.
“Eun Ha?” the teacher says. I look up, my cheeks turning pink. “You had it right; please repeat it to the class.”
I just hope she won’t make me get up and write it on the board.I’d be sure to fall over again.I awkwardly repeat the formula. The teacher nods before starting explaining the mathematical principle to the class.
“Hey, Wonwoo,” says Jungkook, tapping the glasses boy on the shoulder.
The dark haired boy ignores him, scribbling down the answer to the next question.
“Wonwoo, what did you get for question five?” Jungkook persists, tapping his pen on the table.
“I’m on question twelve, one minute,” the boy mutters.
“Show off,” Jungkook says with a grin. I look down at and cover my own answers. I’m on question eleven.
“I got 3.56 and 7.48,” says Wonwoo, glancing round.“Oh, hi,” he adds.
“Hi,” I reply.
“Wonwoo,” he says with a nod.
“Eun Ha,” I say.
“You may want to review question eleven,” he suggests. I glance down at my answer, then back
to my calculator display.
“Oh,” I utter, changing my 3 to an 8. “I copied it wrong.”
“Easy mistake to make,” he says with a shrug. “Have you considered joining Math club?”
Jungkook starts sniggering.
“Math club?” Taehyung asks.
“You want to join?” Wonwoo questions. He raises an eyebrow at the ginger boy.
“Math is my best subject,” Taehyung says proudly.
“It’s mine too, doesn’t mean I want to join the math club,” Jungkook scoffs, as if hanging out with nerds would cause an allergic reaction.
“When is it?” I ask quickly.
“We meet on Wednesdays,” he replies, “It’s separate from the Academic society and we enter competitions and solve problems and stuff like that.”
“Maybe,” I say.
“Seriously?” Jungkook utters.
“Well, I’d like to get on with my work now, so if you don’t have any other questions,” says Wonwoo, throwing Jungkook a look.
“Are you seriously going to join the math club?” Jungkook asks. “Talk about social suicide.”
“Shut up, Kookie, I’m trying to do math,” Taehyung grumbles.
Jungkook pulls a face before getting on with his work.
Soon enough, the class is over.
“Bye, Eun Ha,” says Wonwoo, “I hope you’ll join the math club.”
“Bye, Wonwoo,” I reply as I shoulder my satchel.
“What a nerd,” Jungkook says.
“I thought the smart students were respected,” I mutter.
“You’d think so,” Taehyung says.
“Let’s go to Korean,” says Jungkook, leading the way out of the classroom.
“Are you smart, then?” Taehyung asks with interest, hanging back beside me as we follow Jungkook down the corridor.
“Uh…” I utter, not really knowing how to answer the question. Yes, Taehyung, I’m really smart; I was a top student at my last school! I’m obviously smarter than you, have you seen my grades?
“I wish I was smarter,” he mumbles, looking away.
“Hurry up, you two,” Jungkook calls, making a full turn right in the middle of the corridor as he looks back at us. I straighten my tie.
“Settle down class!” says the Korean teacher.
“Eun Ha, you’re sitting with us,” says Jungkook, grabbing my wrist.
“Hey!” Taehyung says loudly, “You don’t just grab people!”
Jungkook quickly lets go and bows apologetically. “I’m sorry,” he says.
“It’s fine; just forget about it,” I say awkwardly.
“Sit here, anyway,” he says hurriedly, pulling out a chair. I sit next to him, and Taehyung sits across at the next desk in the row.
“Hi, are you new?” a girl asks. She is sitting next to Taehyung and has short auburn hair with a cute fringe.
“Yeah,” I reply, adjusting my glasses for probably the hundredth time today.
“I’m Min,” she says, sticking out a hand past Taehyung. I reach over to shake it.
“I’d say welcome, but you’ve probably heard that a lot today,” she says with a smile.
“Yeah, I have, actually,” I reply with a laugh.
“Let’s begin, please,” says the teacher, and we all begin reading our textbooks.
I skim through the paragraphs, immediately grasping the concept. I glance over at Taehyung, who is wearing an expression of intense concentration. Min seems to have already finished reading and is staring out of the window. I look at Jungkook, who throws me a grin.
“And I’ll have your essays in next week, please,” the teacher says. He picks up a pile of papers from his desk and starts handing them back to the students.
“Good work, Jungkook,” he says, presenting the brown haired boy with a paper graded A.
“And you, Min.” The short haired girl is also presented with an A.
“I expect better from you, Taehyung,” he says, “There were many spelling errors.”Taehyung’s face falls as he stares at the amount of red pen on his essay. He hurriedly covers it with his hands, but not before I snatch a glance at his grade. A large red E is written in the top right hand corner. My stomach sinks.
“I have already seen your grades, Eun Ha,” says the teacher. My gaze snaps up to look at the smartly dressed man. “From you last school; I hope that you continue to excel at Cherry Falls.”
I wrinkle my nose at the word ‘excel’, but nod in response.
“Class dismissed! Don’t forget your homework essays are due this time next week.”
The students begin to leave the classroom after the bell chimes. It’s lunchtime, right? Today has gone so quickly…
“Having lunch with us?” Jungkook asks promptly. Taehyung still looks a bit sad, it must be the grade he got on his essay. “Tae?” he says, elbowing his friend.Taehyung quickly plasters a smile on his face.
“Yeah, sure,” he utters.
“See you later, Eun Ha!” Min calls as she runs to join a group of girls who are outside amongst the autumn leaves.
“Let’s go!” says Taehyung.
“Did you bring your own lunch?” Jungkook asks.
“Yeah, I did,” I answer.
“I forgot mine,” he says sheepishly, “Wait out here with Tae while I go buy something.”
That was very direct.
“Don’t take forever!” Taehyung calls after him. “Do you want to find somewhere to sit?”
“How about over there?” I suggest, pointing at a bench under a tree whose leaves have almost all fallen.
Taehyung quickly runs over and sits down in the middle of the bench.
“Someone else could have taken it otherwise,” he says by way of explanation when I reach him.
“Good point,” I say, sitting down next to him. From where we are sitting, I can see a group of older kids hanging by the wall, and on the other side is the basketball court.
I see a short guy running around in his uniform, ducking under the arm of a taller boy and getting the basketball through the hoop with seemingly very little effort. His black hair has become messy what with all the running.
“Jimin!” I say loudly, raising a hand. I then realise that I have drawn the attention both him and the other players.
“Hi, Eun Ha!” he yells back, tucking the ball under his arm and running over. “How’s your first day going?”
“Pretty good, thank you,” I reply. “You play basketball?”
“I’m on the lower school team,” he replies with a shrug.
“Hey, give us back the ball!” another boy yells from the court.
Jimin chuckles. “Those guys are sophomores,” he says, pointing at two of the players. “Yoongi,” he adds, gesturing to a small guy with short auburn hair and a frown. “And Hoseok,” he finishes, pointing at a taller boy with mousey brown hair and a wide grin.
I wave awkwardly. The two wave back, Hoseok more enthusiastically that the shorter one.
“Well, see you guys later,” says Jimin, turning and running back to the court. I hear Hoseok say “Ooh!” and he pokes Jimin in the ribs.
“Some people are very immature,” Taehyung says rather matter-of-factly.
“Who’s immature?” Jungkook questions, returning with a polystyrene box of kimchi and rice.
“Observe,” says Taehyung, gesturing to his friend. We both laugh.
“Sorry, what?” Jungkook asks, confused.
“Sit down,” the ginger boy says, rummaging in his bag for his sandwich. I open my plastic box of cold noodles and tear open a packet of chopsticks.
As we eat our lunch, I look around the school yard. The cool kids hanging out opposite the basketball court are playing music. It sounds like hip hop, and one guy is sitting on the wall and talking to the others. He has silvery blond hair and wears his tie loose and his top button undone, a collection of badges on his blazer.
Suddenly a blond girl who is hanging out with them drops her apple due to laughing at something I can only assume was very funny. The red apple rolls towards us. The older girl rolls her eyes flicks her fringe out of her eyes and runs over. I pick up the apple and offer it to her.
“Hi, there, I’m Lisa,” she says with a wide grin.
