Just One Day (BTS)

Episode 11: When Tutor Meets Student

Taehyung starts giggling. Min turns round and sees us. I wave at her, and she blushes, waving back.

“Looks like she does have a boyfriend,” Jungkook remarks.

Min murmurs something to the blond guy before hurrying over to our table.

“Hello, Min,” I say with a wide smile.

She blushes harder, her small face becoming redder by the second.

“Who’s the guy?” Jungkook asks, leaning in, “He’s a sophomore, right?”

She nods. "His name is Kim Minseok.”

“Are you two dating?” Jungkook asks directly.

“Shh!” she exclaims, putting a finger to her lips. “You can’t tell anyone, especially Seolhyun.”

“Why?” I question, my brow furrowing. “Is there any reason you shouldn’t be dating him?”

Min shakes her head vigorously. “You just cannot tell her, you three had better swear it.”

Taehyung places a hand over his heart and nods solemnly.

“I won’t tell anyone, I promise,” I assure her.

“Thanks,” she says breathlessly.

“Min?” says Minseok, walking over with two iced coffees.

“Thanks, oppa,” she says shyly, taking her coffee.

“Hi,” he says with a smile, looking at the three of us.

“Oh, these are my friends,” Min says quickly, “Jungkook, Taehyung and Eun Ha.”

“Nice to meet you guys,” Minseok says.

“And you,” says Taehyung.

“Well, I’ll see you guys,” says Min.

“Enjoying the break from exams?” Jungkook asks slyly.

“I’m sure she is,” I say, slapping his arm, “Stop bothering them.”

Minseok laughs. “See you around school.”

“See you, hyung,” Jungkook calls after them, “Bye, Min.”

Min looks like she wants to die as she follows Minseok out of the café.

“Jungkook, you’re really annoying,” I state.

“I’ll second that,” Taehyung agrees, trying to hide his smile.

“I wonder why she doesn’t want Seolhyun finding out,” Jungkook wonders.

“Don’t you dare,” I say. “She told us to keep it a secret.”

“We should respect her wishes,” Taehyung adds.

“You two are no fun,” Jungkook grumbles.

We finish out milkshakes and walk home. With a weekend approaching, I’m looking forward to catching up with my favourite drama and eating lots of chocolate.

“So, I think everyone’s here now,” says Cha Eunwoo, the president of the Student Academic society. We have gathered in the school library and are seated at desks, waiting to find out who we’ll be tutoring. “I have a list of the students, along with their report cards so you’ll know which areas they need tuition in.”

My hands fidget nervously as I wait. I untangle my fingers and try not to tap the table.

“I’ll give out the documentation, and the students will be coming to meet you,” he says, checking his watch, “Right about now.”

A piece of paper appears on the table in front of me.

“Who did you get?” Jin asks, turning round in his seat. “I got Yoongi.” He makes a face. “Apparently he needs help in Math.”

I cast my eyes down the sheet of paper as students begin to enter the library to meet their tutors. The grades are, quite frankly, terrible. E’s in Korean, History and Geography, D’s in the sciences and languages, C’s in Music and P.E… A’s in Math and Art? Wait a second-

“Hi!” an excited, deep, and incredibly familiar voice calls. I look up to see a grinning Taehyung standing at my table. Well, shi-

“Oh, hey, Taehyung,” Jin says with a grin. I go pale, then bright red.

“Eun Ha!” Taehyung giggles, “I didn’t know you’d be my tutor!”

“N-neither did I,” I stammer, glancing down at the report card. I had completely skipped the name in my haste to look at those grades.

“You seem nervous,” Jin observes.

“You seem to be forgetting about your own student,” I snap, jerking my head towards the auburn-haired basketball player who hovers at Jin’s desk.

“Oh, sorry,” he says sheepishly.

“Hey, Eun Ha,” says Yoongi, inclining his head at me. “I spoke to the coach last week about the mixed team.”

I give a nod.

“I don’t know why I’m telling you this,” he goes on. “Oh, yeah,” he says, snapping his fingers. “Lisa said you should try out for the team.”

I adjust my glasses.“Me?” I utter.

“Yeah,” he says, rubbing the back of his neck. “No idea why, are you good at basketball?”

“Well, I-”

“Anyway, I trust her judgement,” says Yoongi, waving a hand. “Try-outs are Wednesday after school.”

“Okay,” I squeak. Yoongi takes a seat across from Jin, and they begin to discuss Math.

“Do I sit here?” Taehyung asks loudly, earning glances from half the library.

I nod fervently. “Yeah, just sit there.”

He tugs out the chair and plonks himself in front of my. I swallow.

“I suppose you’ve seen my grades,” he says, his expression becoming morose.

“Yeah,” I say. “But don’t worry,” I quickly add, “We can improve them.”

“Together?”

“Together,” I confirm. He beams, and it’s like someone opened a window and let the sun into a dark room.

“What should we work on first?” he asks.

“Uh, well, you have E’s in Korean, History and Geography,” I say, casting my eye down the list.

“You’re really good at Korean,” he says.

I sigh. “Thanks,” I reply, “But I actually hate Geography.”

“Really?”

“There’s too much writing,” I consider, “Sorry. I shouldn’t be complaining about school.”

“No, it’s okay, I understand,” he says, “Like, I find it interesting, but…”

“Essays,” we say in unison. We laugh awkwardly.

“Anyway, if we concentrate on bringing your grades up for Korean and History first,” I begin.

“Good idea!” he exclaims, a little too excited about the whole thing. “When should we study?”

“I suppose we can study after school,” I reply, “What days are good for you?”

“Every day,” he answers. “I mean, I have to study now, so I’ll be free every day after school.”

“Then let’s start today,” I suggest, suddenly becoming rather professional. “We can work on Korean and History after school; see what you need help in the most.”

“I’ll meet you in the library, then,” he says, resting his face on his hand.

“Okay, everyone!” Eunwoo calls from the front of the library. “The bell’s about to go, so head to your classes.”

“Come on, Eun Ha,” Taehyung says with a grin, “We’ve got History.”

“We’ll be going through the midterm paper, probably,” I say with a groan. I gather up my things, slinging my bag over my shoulder. I know I made some stupid mistakes on that paper; the topic had to be my worst so far.

“This is not going to be fun,” Taehyung mutters as we leave the library.

Jungkook’s mouth forms a smirk as Taehyung and I enter the classroom, as if we walked in holding hands or something.

“What did I tell you?” he yells, punching Tae’s arm repeatedly.

“Yah!” Taehyung exclaims, sweeping Jungkook’ arm out of the way and sitting down. I take my seat next to the ginger boy.

“I’m going to hand out the midterm exam papers,” says the teacher, and the students groan. “Some of you did exceptionally well,” he continues, slapping a paper onto Jungkook’s desk. A.

“Some of you could do better.”

My paper lands on my desk.B minus. I make a face.

“Some of you are clearly struggling with the subject.”

Taehyung’s face falls when he receives his essay back. He got an F. He swiftly turns his paper over before crossing his arms and staring out of the window.

The teacher talks us through what we should have written for our essays, and soon enough, the class is over.

“I’m not really sure I’m the best person to be tutoring you for History,” I fret as we leave the classroom. I could feel the teacher glaring at me for almost the whole of class.

“Don’t be stupid,” Jungkook scoffs, “You just flunked that one, didn’t you?”

I frown. No, actually, I studied for that exam. Just not enough.

Taehyung smacks the kid. “Don’t call Eun Ha stupid,” he says stiffly.

“It’s fine,” I say, waving a hand. “We’ve got Maths now.” I walk ahead of them as they trail behind.

“What’s your problem?” Jungkook hisses. “I thought it was a genius idea for Eun Ha to tutor you, why are you taking it out on me?”

“She’s just upset about her exam,” Taehyung retorts, “Leave her alone.”

“Dude, you failed, shouldn’t you be more upset?”

“Hey, Eun Ha,” says a familiar voice. I glance up to see that dark haired Wonwoo has appeared at my side and walks next to me.

“Hi, Wonwoo,” I reply.

“You sure look pleased about something,” he remarks, “Did you just get an exam paper back?”

“Yeah,” I say, “I’m pretty sure my History teacher hates me.”

“Really?” he asks, “What did you get?The essay question was really hard.”

I lower my voice. “B minus.”

He nods. “I actually got a B as well,” he whispers, “So don’t worry.”

“It’s not that,” I say as we near the Maths classroom, “I have to tutor someone in History.” I steal a glance at Taehyung who is still chatting to Jungkook, seeming to have resolved their previous issue.

“You’re tutoring Taehyung, aren’t you?” he questions. I nod. “You know who I have to tutor?” he complains, “This kid, Mingyu. He literally cannot do Math.”

I smile.“Well, you’re amazing at Math, so it should be pretty easy.”

He sighs.“You haven’t met him, that’s all I’m saying.”

“How is Jeonghan?” I question.

“Oh, he’s alright,” says Wonwoo, cracking a smile, “He badly sprained his ankle so he’ll be out of basketball for a while, but he’s in school on crutches. I just walked him safely to Physics.”

“I’m glad he’s not too seriously injured,” I reply.

“Talking about math?” Jungkook asks suggestively, sliding up to us and inserting himself between our shoulders.

“Don’t you think that was a bit creepy?” I say pointedly.

Jungkook scoffs.“So you weren’t talking about math?”

Wonwoo and I simultaneously roll our eyes, before adjusting our glasses.

“Hi, Wonwoo,” Taehyung says enthusiastically.

“Hi, Taehyung,” the dark haired boy replies.

“Anyway, we have Math,” I say, walking ahead and entering the classroom.

“The subject Eun Ha doesn’t have to tutor you in,” Jungkook says.

Sitting between Jungkook and Taehyung, pay attention to the teacher’s explanations and examples, before picking up my pen and looking at the questions in my textbook. We’ve had our papers back, but most of the class did really well, so the teacher’s run-down of the paper was brief. Even Taehyung got an A. I tap my pen against my face as I read the first question. I glance to my left to see that Taehyung is tapping his pen in the same fashion. A small smile creeps onto my face as I begin to write.

Korean is next. We walk into the classroom and I sit down next to Jungkook as usual. Taehyung is at the next desk beside Min. I wave at her.

“So how was your date?” Jungkook asks suggestively.Min looks stricken. I elbow him in the ribs
.
“Shut up,” I say.

“Woah, sorry,” he utters, holding up both hands.

“Stop it, Jungkook,” Taehyung says, his face serious.

“Guys, take a joke,” Jungkook grumbles.

“I’m sorry about him,” I say to Min. I lower my voice before continuing. “Did you enjoy, though?”

Min nods, her face turning pink. “Yeah, it was really fun.”

“You should tell me more about him later,” I tell her, fiddling with my earring. She looks like she is desperate to tell someone all about it, but she had said not to tell Seolhyun.

“Eun Ha,” says the teacher. My head jerks up.“You’re tutoring Taehyung, right?” I nod. “Well, I would advise you to address basic spelling and grammar first.”

Taehyung squirms, looking at the floor. I set my jaw.

“Yes, teacher,” I answer. How could she embarrass Tae like that?

“Woah, that was pretty rough,” Jungkook whispers.

“Taehyung,” I say, trying to get his attention. “Tae,” I utter, tugging on his sleeve. He turns his eyes towards me, the deep brown orbs now sombre. “Tae, it’s okay.”

He gives a nod.

“Don’t worry, okay?”

His lips curl into a smile, and we continue with the lesson. The rest of the day goes by fairly quickly, and before I even register how fast the time’s going, we’ve had Biology and now Taehyung and I are sitting in Art.

“We have study hall next,” he says with a yawn, resting his face on his hand. I have to admit, sleepy Tae is really cute.

“Yeah,” I reply, “Do… do you want to start then?”

“Tutoring?” he questions.“Okay.”

“We can work on Korean,” I say. “I was thinking earlier,” I add, and he looks expectantly at me, “That as your Korean improves, your Geography and History grades should also go up.”

“Because of the essay writing?”

I nod.

“Good idea, Eun Ha,” he says. “I can’t even write well in my own language,” he grumbles.

I lower my voice. “Have you always found it hard?” I ask.

He nods morosely. “Always.”

“Well, I’m here to help,” I say with a shrug.

“Class dismissed.”

“Shall we go to the library?” Taehyung asks as we pack up.

“Yeah, I think Eunwoo mentioned something about us having a pass to miss study hall,” I answer, “We can go to the library instead.”

“Let’s go, then,” he says happily, and the two of us head to the school library to begin the tutoring.
