Just One Day (BTS)

Episode 1: Ice Breaker

My name is Kwon Eun Ha. I am sixteen years old and am a freshman in high school. As the new student, I expect that much attention would be directed towards me on my first day at my new school. I’m just wishing the opposite.

Having received my schedule, I’m standing in the busy corridor that is lined with lockers and crowded with students. Staring at the piece of paper in my shaky hands, I try to figure out the numbering system of the lockers. Mine is 2471, but I can’t see any numbers due to the herds of students.

“Excuse me, are you new to Cherry Falls?” a helpful-sounding voice asks.

I glance up to see a tall boy with fluffy brown hair and a pleasant smile. He is wearing the school uniform in a neat and tidy fashion, and he has a small gold badge on the left pocket of his grey blazer that reads PREFECT. I’m guessing this guy could help me find my locker.

I nod, my dark wavy hair brushing the sides of my face.

“What’s your name?”

“Eun Ha,” I say, realising I probably should have introduced myself just now. I adjust my large square-framed glasses and smile awkwardly.

“I’m Jin,” he says, placing a hand on his chest. He shoulders his rucksack. “Have you been given a locker number?” he asks helpfully.

“2471.”

“2471?That’s just down here,” says Jin, leading the way past the other students in the corridor. “Excuse me,” he says loudly, causing a bunch of students to move out of the way. “Here it is.”

“Thanks,” I mumble, grabbing the key from my blazer pocket and unlocking the narrow locker.

“No problem,” he replies, “If you need help finding your way around, or have any other questions, just ask. I am a prefect, after all.”

“Okay, thanks, Jin,” I say, smiling for the first time today.

“See you, Eun Ha.” He smiles back before disappearing down the busy corridor.

“Right,” I mutter to myself, checking the books I have in my satchel. Having simply transferred in the middle of October, I already have all of my textbooks for freshman year. I was sent my new schedule by email, so my satchel is full of my subjects for the day. Deciding to test my memory later, I place my geography, biology and Japanese textbooks in my locker. Hopefully I’ll be able to find my way back to my locker at lunchtime.

“Jungkook, wait!” a voice yells from down the corridor.

Another voice laughs as the owner of it runs past me and round the corner. I close my locker and take a step back, fumbling with the clasp on my bag. I don’t see who’s running down the corridor towards me. The boy smacks into me, and we both go sprawling.

“Oh, I’m so sorry…”

Glancing up, my view of the ceiling is blocked by the shocked face of a boy with bright orange hair and wide brown eyes.

“Uh…” I utter.He gulps.I look at him. He blinks.

“Sorry!” he apologises loudly.

He scrambles to his feet, brushing off his uniform and hurriedly sticking out a hand towards me. I hesitate before grabbing onto his strong hand, and letting him tug me to his feet, somewhat awkwardly. I notice the details of his tanned hand; he has a freckle on his thumb.

“Are you new here?” he asks.

“Yeah,” I reply. We realise that we are still holding hands in the middle of the corridor, with probably half the student body staring at us.We both laugh awkwardly, letting go, and our hands fall to our sides.

“Tae?” a boy asks, running up to us. “What happened?”

“Uh…” the ginger boy falters. He looks from me to the brown haired boy. The other students have lost interest and continue to their classes.

“I have to go,” I say, quickly turning the key in my locker.

“Don’t forget your key,” he said, taking the key and slapping it into my palm. “2471, we’re locker neighbors!”

I try to smile, but probably make a really awkward face.

“Anyway, enjoy Cherry Falls!” he adds brightly, grabbing the arm of his friend and taking off down the corridor.

“…Thanks?” I muttered, raising an eyebrow and adjusting my glasses. I glance down at my right hand, remembering the strong yet gentle grip of that boy. He had a strangely deep voice for a freshman. At least I assume he’s a freshman. Jin’s got to be a sophomore if he’s a prefect…

I blink. Well… that was weird. I head to class.

“Kwon Eun Ha, is it?” the teacher asks.

“Yes, teacher,” I reply, raising my eyes from the buckles on my school shoes. I haven’t had a look round the classroom yet, but can feel numerous pairs of eyes on me already.

“Please take a seat,” she says, “This will be your homeroom, so be sure to arrive before quarter to nine every day.”

“Thank you, teacher,” I say, turning my gaze to the students in front of me. “Oh no…” I mumble.
There, in the middle row, sits the ginger boy and his friend. It has literally been five minutes since I last saw this guy. His brown haired friend points excitedly at me, nudging him. The ginger boy shakes his head, embarrassed.

“There’s a free seat here,” someone calls helpfully. I look over to see a boy with black hair who sits at a desk by the window. I walk over as he pulls out the chair beside him, and quickly sit down; the autumn leaves paint a pretty picture of the school yard in auburn, amber and gold. “Hi, I’m Jimin,” he says with a grin.

“Eun Ha,” I reply, giving a small smile.

I feel a tap on my shoulder. Turning, I see that the brown haired guy is reaching across his ginger friend to get my attention. Glancing to my right, I see that they sit in the same row. I sigh inwardly.

“Hi?” I utter.

“I’m Jungkook,” he says with a wide smile, offering me his hand. He shakes my hand enthusiastically. “Pleased to meet you,” he adds, “You’re very pretty.”

I raise my eyebrows at this comment. Jimin rolls his eyes. The ginger boy wrinkles his nose.I look at him. Meeting my gaze, he flinches slightly.

“I’m Taehyung,” he says in that unexpectedly deep voice.

“Nice to meet you,” I reply, not knowing where this confidence has appeared from.

“I’m really sorry about earlier,” he blurts.

“Quite the ice breaker,” Jungkook says with a smirk.

“What happened?” Jimin asks curiously.

Taehyung and I simultaneously break out in awkward laughter, avoiding each other’s glances.

“Tae-tae here knocked the new girl over in the corridor,” Jungkook helpfully informs him.

“Oh, that’s a bit awkward,” Jimin says with a chuckle. Yeah, no kidding, Jimin…

I absentmindedly rub my elbow.

“Did I hurt you?” Taehyung asks worriedly.

“Huh?” I look at him. “Oh, no, it’s fine.”

“I’m really sorry,” he says again.

“I think she gets it, Tae,” Jungkook says.“Anyway, Eun Ha, right?”

“Mhm.”I nod.

“What brings you to Cherry Falls?” he questions. Taehyung looks rather put out.

“I transferred from another high school.”

“Oh, really? Why?”

“Because I let a tiger from the zoo loose in the library,” I say suddenly.

The three boys look at me. Taehyung starts laughing.

“Sorry,” I add quickly, “I was just joking.” I mentally face-palm.

“Is that what you’re telling everyone?” Jimin asks with a smile. He shakes his head.

Taehyung’s shoulders are still shaking with stifled laughter.

“I bet that would be- Dude, are you still imagining a tiger running round the library!?” He interrupted himself by having a go at Taehyung.

The ginger boy let out another laugh. “Don’t you find that hilarious?” he demanded.

I laugh despite myself. “I actually just moved house.”

“See, she is normal,” Jungkook says, shaking his head, “Not like our alien, here.”

“Alien?” I question.

“That’s what Kookie calls me,” Taehyung explains.

“It’s because he’s really weird,” Jungkook supplies.

“No kidding,” Jimin says, looking at his watch. “I think the bell’s about to go.”

“I am from Daegu, I was educated in the proper manner,” Taehyung says matter-of-factly.

“You’re from another planet, I still believe it,” Jungkook says in a serious tone, though he grins.

The bell chimes, and all of the students begin to pack up and leave the classroom. I check my schedule. I have history next.

“What have you got now?” Jimin asks.

“History,” I reply.

“I’ve got maths. Try not to get lost.” He throws me a grin.

“See you, Jimin,” I say.

“Bye, Eun Ha,” Jimin responds as he gets up and tucks his chair in. That’s when I notice how short he is. I say short; he is still a few inches taller than me.

“Come on, Tae,” says Jungkook, practically dragging his friend out of the classroom.

I pick up my bag and find my way to my history classroom. As a group of students enter the classroom on the left, I look up to read the sign above the room on the right. It’s my history room, and standing right under it, is Taehyung. I take a deep breath and walk towards him. Maybe things will be less awkward this time. Looking up, he smiles.
