One Thing After Another

Confusion

"Keep your hand there! They’re nice and cold…” he said closing his eyes again and smiling. My heart meanwhile seemed like it was about to burst through my ribcage. I couldn’t stop feeling so taken by him, and I hated and loved it. I kept my eyes on his face, admiring his every feature. Noticing small moles here and there. He opened his eyes and looked into mine. Holding each other’s gazes, we let minutes pass by. I didn’t pull away this time, waiting for him to do it first, but he never did. His cheeks pink with slight fever, mine pink but not for the same reason. His hand on my wrist softly, as my hand held one side of his face.
“So beautiful…” he whispered out into the quiet room.
“Huh?” I said questioning whether I’d heard him correctly, and pretending like I didn’t hear it properly.
“Eunnie,” he said with a slow blink.
“Hmm?”
“How do you feel about Soonyoung hyung?” He said removing my hand from his cheek and looking into the palm of it.
“What about him?” I asked as if I didn’t know what he was talking. I wanted to avoid the topic for some reason around Dino.
“He likes you,” he began, "do you like him?” He said looking up into my eyes waiting on my response. I paused awkwardly, looking around the room suddenly for an exit. I didn’t know how to answer.
“He’s a funny and genuine person, who wouldn’t like him,” I said slightly uncertainly with a nervous chuckle. I looked at Chan’s face to see his face filled with a disappointing look covered with a smile. I sighed a little feeling like I shouldn’t have answered that way. It was clear to everyone in Seventeen knew that Hoshi liked me, and I liked him. But saying it to Dino felt odd, like us liking each other wasn’t the case. “Feel like food? I can make you something or go out and get something,” I suggested as I retracting my hand from his lap and stood up.
"I can’t let you go out, not with the situation you’re in right now,” Dino said with slight pain in his voice as he stood up from his bed.
"How’s the leg?” I asked looking worryingly at his hurt leg. I winced a little seeing his face show a hurt look.
“Sore,” he said plainly. I patted on his bed with my hand.
"I’ll get some pain killers, wait here,” I ran off into what I presumed was the bathroom and after making sure it was the bathroom, I sighed as I made sure I was out of his sight. My heart needed a break. It was beating non-stop ever since I walked into that room. I searched the cabinets slowly and carefully for some paracetamol. Finding some I walked back into his room with it to find him gone. I walked back out into the living room searching. Not there. I looked into the kitchen to see him boiling the kettle and cleaning rice. I gasped and jogged my way over to him.
“Stop! I’ll do that,” I said as I slid the rice cooker across the counter and in front of me.
“I can do it, don’t worry,” he spoke as he tried to slid the cooker back over but he couldn’t put much weight onto his leg. He winced a little, and looked at me to see if I noticed. I did.
“No you can’t, your leg!” I said as assertively as I could, gesturing to his leg.
“I’m fine,” he said ignoring what I’d just said, trying to slid the cooker across the counter once again.
“Lee Chan! You will listen to me,” I raised my voice, feeling annoyed he hadn’t listened to me. I must have surprised him because he looked at me with a shocked face. With slightly furrowed eyebrows I continued, “go sit down in the lounge and let me do this. It’s the least I can do since I got you into this situation.” Still surprised by my raised voice, he blinked at me, speechless. I sighed and pulled his arm over to lie on my shoulder. I helped him to the couch but the entire time I could feel his gaze on me. I tried to ignore it as I headed back to the kitchen and started making a meal for us.

After finishing up cooking I set it on the coffee table in front of the tv so we could eat and watch. As I brought each dish out, Dino ‘ooo’d and ‘ahh’d. Finishing with placing the rice cooker on the table Channie clapped. I smiled a little to myself before sitting down, “come eat."
Sitting down and eating together I’d find myself taking glances at him constantly checking how he was. Since I’d let him hurt himself, I’ve been overly worried. Just watching the TV while we ate, other K-POP groups were on. With one glance at Dino I could tell he was already missing being with the rest of the boys. "Tell me something about you Mr Lee,” I said formally trying to distracting him from feeling like he was missing out.
"Well, I have to say what’s on my mind. Like, I can’t stand not being able to say what I want to say,” he said honestly stuffing food into his mouth, “this is really good Eunnie.” I smiled again feeling like my average cooking was actually appetising.
"You like to be heard,” I nodded grabbing some food off a dish and putting it onto my bowl of rice.
"Yeah, I just want to be heard,” he mumbled through his food-filled mouth. I giggled a little at his chipmunk-like cheeks. I chewed my mouthful of food feeling myself falling for Channie little by little.
"Funny, I do the opposite. Too worried I’m going to hurt someone with my words,” I said almost as a confession, staring at my food. But I felt like I could say what I wanted to around him in the moment. I mean it was just us.
"You worry too much,” he said shaking his head softly while swallowing.
"Well with a life full of people throwing rude words at me, I’ve become sensitive to words.” I said playing with my rice feeling my heart race faster as we were suddenly talking about this strange subject I hadn’t really spoken about to others.
“Who said bad words to you?” He dropped his chopsticks and spoon into his bowl and looked at me with urgency.
“Different people throughout my life,” I stared and blinked back at him wondering why he was getting so worked up about this. No one else ever has. Plus that stuff is in the past. After I answered Chan sighed looking slightly defeated.
“Since you asked me a question I’m going to ask you one,” he said grabbing his chopsticks and spoon again to eat.
“Go ahead,” I nodded getting back to eating as well.
"Who did you work with before Seventeen?"
"Well not a lot of kpop groups, more just actors and models, meaning overseas trips,” I said thinking back to the many years of training and travel.
“America?” He said looking up momentarily from his food.
“Yup,” I nodded in reply.
"You like it over there?” He asked as I gulped down some food.
"It’s so-so. I mean I can speak English but I feel so uncomfortable around the people,” I said honestly.
"You came from Korea, that’s only natural,” Dino said nodding. I paused a little to think.
“Well… not necessarily,” I replied finally.
"You grew up here. It must mean something to you,” he said finishing up his food already. He must have been hungry since it’s quite late.
“It does…” I started off nodding, fading off.
“But…?” He said looking curiously at me, almost reading my mind. I looked at him a while getting a little lost in his eyes.
“But I can’t help but wondering where I originate from, ethnically.”
“Why don’t you find out?”
“I’m not ready. What if they don’t like me?”
“No one can hate you. You’re too nice,” he said shaking his head with a small smile playing on his lips. “Thank you for the meal Eunnie,” he said starting to try grab dishes, but standing up hurt him and he retreated the dishes back to the table.
“I’ll take them back,” I said standing up and stacking dishes on each other. He gave me a warm smile as a thank you and I rolled my eyes and walked the dishes into the sink in the kitchen. Out of his view I smiled to myself, feeling giddy. “I hope you know I’m only doing this because of your leg!” I said projecting my voice to the lounge. Hearing a small laugh from him and laughed to myself too.

The day went quite quickly with both Dino and I doing work for school and with spare time before the boys came back, we watched a movie. Both of us sitting on opposite ends of the couch almost like we were trying so hard to separate ourselves. Though the movie was cut short but an interrupting bell ring. Before I could even get to the door, Hoshi emerged through it. Like an excited puppy reunited with it’s owner, he swept his shoes off and galloped towards me. He quickly hugged me tightly taking me by surprise as I squealed a little.
"Eunnie! God, I missed you,” he said into my hair still in the hug. I wrapped my arms around his shoulders, resting my head on his shoulder for a moment before we both let go.
“Hey Hoshi! Where’s the others?” I said with a smile on my face. I did miss him I’ll be honest. Especially the already bright atmosphere he brought to the room.
“I ran ahead of them to see you,” he flashed his winning eye smile, “they’ll be up soon but stay around outside for a bit okay? I want to talk.” With that he walked over to Dino who was on the couch still with the movie playing. I looked back to him seeing him peering over the back of the couch looking a little bitter before Hoshi approached him which caused a change in expression. My chest feeling like it deflated as I saw his bitter expression. I turned around and greeted the rest of the members in with a smile before leaving the dorm.

I hung around the corridor to their dorm for a while after I had greeted them all inside and they were busy talking to Dino about the day. Almost knowing what Hoshi wanted to talk to me about, I tried to calm my sped up heartbeat down with deep breathes. Hearing a door open and shut behind me I turned around clutching my purse strap tightly to see Hoshi jogging up to me with a smile on his face.
“Haeun! Thank you for sticking around,” he said with big eyes as he stopped in front of me.
“That’s okay, it was only five minutes,” I waved my hand in slight protest, with a small smile. He continued to smile at me and me to him. I stood there for a while, waiting for him to tell me what he came to tell me.
“I like you!” He blurted out loudly. I blinked rapidly in response to the sudden confession. “I mean you already know that but, I just wanted you to know,” he started to look anywhere but my eyes and was rubbing the nape of his neck in nervousness. I exhaled as I had been holding my breath since he said he liked me. My heart still racing and my cheeks starting to burn a little. He finally said it.
“Well I’m flattered Hoshi, I really am,” a smile appeared on my face as I showed my appreciation towards Hoshi’s confession.
“And if you’ll allow it, I want to go out sometime with you,” every word he spoke seemed to be filled with his nerves. He kept touching the edges of his clothes and adjusting his weight. As flattered as I was, I mean this was Hoshi from Seventeen asking me out, I couldn’t help but think about my job.
“With me?” I questioned, pointing a finger to myself. He nodded rapidly. “Hoshi you know better than anyone else that these sort of relationships don’t work,” I said with weight in my voice. I hated to bring down his mood but it was true.
“I know but I can’t help trying,” he said with exasperation.
“I appreciate you confessing, and I think I feel the same,” I slowly replied being careful to phrase my words. His eyes lighting up, looking into them was difficult. I wanted to enjoy being around him more. He was so exciting to be around. “But there will always be a limit as long as I’m your manager, Soonyoung-oppa.” I also exhaled out in a sad tone. His lit up eyes dimming slightly in disappointment. Seeing the disappointment fill his eyes, a part of me was wondering why I was holding back. “Let’s give it a try,” I blurt out. He looked up form his despair with wide eyes.
“Really?! You’ll really try?” He said almost jumping, with a gigantic smile on his face.
“I mean, I’m very busy,” I said to him. He nodded showing me he knew. “Sometimes I talk too much,” I added on looking at the ground studying my shoes. I gasped as he quickly engulfed me into his arms. I looked up over his shoulder, feeling his body’s heat and his heart beat again mine.
“Thank you for giving me a shot,” he said in a whispered tone. A smile appeared across my face. What a cutie.
“Thank you for making me happy,” I said finally having the nerve to wrap my arms around his waist.
