The Flowers You Left For Me.

12 Love and Hatred

Areum’s POV

Kai hasn’t returned to class since our confrontation, but even so, I keep looking at his seat.

The feeling of his warm lips against mine is still present. I touch my lips with my forefinger and stare at the classroom door. Where is he?

“Ari, class is over.” Baekhyun nudges my shoulder.

I nod and rise from my seat. Before I have the chance to leave, Baekhyun touches my hand. I look at him and raise an eyebrow.

“Today’s your day off isn’t it?” He says with a small smile. “Are you going home?”

“I’m not going to the diner if that’s what you’re asking.” I mutter.

He retracts his hand and give me an apologetic chuckle. “I’ll see you tomorrow then.”

Without another word, I leave the room before him. As I walk down the hallway, my eyes scan the hallways for any signs of Kai. There are so many questions I have for him.

In the end, there were no signs of him in the school what-so-ever. With a sigh, I drag myself out of the school grounds and turn the corner to head home.

Before I have the chance to walk in deep thoughts, a hand pulls me by the arm and into an alleyway. I feel my breath get caught in my throat as I open my mouth to scream.

“Areum.” The voice stops me.

Kai?

“Sorry, did I scare you?” His face is only inches away from mine and I’m suddenly reminded of the kiss we shared in the office.

I push him away and turn to hide the color that’s creeping up my face. “W-what do you want?”

I hear him let out a small chuckle. “It’s our day off-”

I look up at him in surprise. Was he possibly talking about our promise?

Kai scratches his head and a small smile plays on his lips. “How about that dinner?”

I can’t contain my smile as it spreads across my lips. “Right, of course.”

Together, we head for his apartment. We ride in his car in silence. However, it isn’t an awkward silence. No words have to be said to feel our connection with each other. When I enter his apartment, I’m pleasantly surprised by the way his kitchen looked.

The cutlery is out in the open, and the dishes are all laid out in the open. Signs that he’s been cooking. With a small gasp I run over and open the drawer that once held his endless boxes of instant noodles.

“They’re gone!” I say in surprise and turn to him.

He laughs and scratches his head. “Yeah, I figured I might as well eat healthier.”

“Good!” I beam at him.

The two of us set off to cook with whatever materials he has in his fridge. I watch him as he chops the vegetables with skills that improved greatly since the last time I was here. Ah, he’s been practicing. No wonder.

My eyes revert from his hands chopping the vegetables to his facial features. I lose my thoughts as I observe his eyes, nose and-

Lips. Those were the lips that touched mine.

I flush and look down at my hands.

Baekhyun’s POV

Areum lied when she said she was going home. I distinctly watch her leave with Kai in his car, probably heading to his apartment. I sigh and lean on the school entrance, debating my next course of action.

“We have work Baek.” Suho walks up behind me and pats me on the back. I nod and let him pass me, my mind still focused on Areum and Kai.

Why won’t she stay away from him? I’ve told her countless times that she shouldn’t go near him.

“Hey,” Suho calls out to me. “Are you coming?”

I open my mouth, about to agree to Suho’s question, but stop myself. What about Areum.

“No, tell my dad that I have something I have to do.” I conclude, finally.

Suho narrows his eyes at me but doesn’t question it. I watch them head for the bus stop. Once the bus leaves, I direct my attention towards Kai’s apartment.

I will make sure she stays away from him, even if it means taking action myself.

-----

Kai’s POV

We eat dinner in silence.

Despite my denial, the kiss I gave her had definitely put a wedge between Areum and I. With one last mouthful of rice in my bowl, I put down my chopsticks and lean on the table towards her.

“Areum,” I say and her big, beautiful eyes look up at me. “Let’s talk about the thing in the office.”

Her face turns bright red and she drops her eyes from me. She keeps her mouth shut and waits for me to continue.

The familiarity of her lips on mine floods my senses. It meant the world to me Areum, just knowing that you didn’t pull away.

“Let’s forget about it.” I say firmly.

She looks up at me in surprise and puts down her bowl. “What do you mean?”

“It...” I pause. “It didn’t mean anything to me, and it shouldn’t-”

She scoffs, cutting me off. “You’re still doing it, denying any feelings you might possibly have for me.”

I swallow hard. She picked it up quick.

“Is it because you think you don’t deserve happiness?” She says softly. “Am I the only one suffering here?”

My mind goes blank at her words. Is that it?

There’s a long moment of silence between us. I avoid her eyes and watch as the food before us becomes cold.

Areum, you don’t understand anything. My life is not one that should be tangled with yours. I will taint you, hurt you.

The doorbell rings breaking into my thoughts. Areum and I exchange a brief look of surprise as I get to my feet and head for the door.

“Hello?” I open the door slowly.

Without warning, the door slams open and pushes me back. Before I can register who it is, a hand comes forward and hits me full in the face. I fall back as Areum lets out a small squeal. My head spins as pain stings my face.

Who?

My vision blurs, but soon focuses onto the figure that stands before me at the entrance.

With his eyes filled with fury, Baekhyun storms into my apartment.

-----

Areum’s POV

“Baekhyun! What was that for!” I rush to Kai’s side and help him sit up again.

“Areum,” Baekhyun’s hand comes down beside me and pulls me up by the wrist. I struggle to get out of his grip, but it’s next to impossible. “Get out.”

I stare at him in disbelief as he shoves me out of Kai’s apartment with my shoes. As I try to get back in, the door slams in my face.

“Baekhyun!” I scream at the closed apartment door. “What are you doing?”

With a frustrated grunt I spam the doorbell with all my might. Please Baekhyun, don’t hurt him!

Moments later, on what felt like the hundredth time I rang the doorbell, the door clicks open. Baekhyun walks out without a word. I stare hard at his expression as he closes the door behind him.

“Baekhyun,” I clutch his arm. “What did you do?”

He tosses me a look and shakes his head. “Nothing, let me bring you home.”

“No,” I let go and press my hand on the door. “I want to see Kai.”

“Kai doesn’t want to see you Ari.” He says quietly.

“You’re lying!” I bellow at him. “I don’t care about what you think Kai is, but he is definitely not dangerous!”

He pauses and his expression darkens. “That’s what you think.”

Without another word Baekhyun left me in the hallways. I watch his back disappear around the corner and feel a sudden feeling of anxiety shoot through my body.

I place my hand on Kai’s door to stabilize myself and suddenly find myself on the verge of tears.

“Kai?” My voice shake. “Open the door.”

There’s no response.

“Kai!” I call out desperately. “Please!

Silence.

“Kai.” I fall to my knees in front of his door, tears streaming down my cheeks uncontrollably. “Don’t do this, stop playing with my feelings like this!”

-----

The next morning, I ride the bus to school with red puffy eyes. I didn’t mean to, but I ended up crying the whole night. It’s only when I thought about it, did I realize how much just how much Kai means to me.

I love him.

I tuck my hair behind my ear and walk up the steps to the entrance. Today, I will tell Kai. If he knows then, everything will be alright.

I walk into the empty classroom and pause again at my desk. Upon it sat the white rose that’s been appearing every day now. I furrow my brows and hold it up to examine.

The rose that Baekhyun gave me.

My heart races suddenly and I’m burning hot with anger. I storm to the garbage can and slam it inside the bag with a grunt. A rose that I don’t want.

All I want is Kai.

I’m not surprised to find Kai’s table empty. My eyes stay glued onto his seat for the entirety of the first and second period, disappointment eating away at me slowly. My appetite is gone and I didn’t feel like sitting at a table with Baekhyun. I head to the roof, hoping to find Kai.

Chanyeol is there instead.

He turns to me as I close the rooftop door and comes up beside me with a concerned look on his face. “You look out of it today.”

I shrug him off and look away. “I’m not in the mood to talk, Chanyeol.”

He nods and leans on the bars at the edge of the roof. “You’re thinking about Kai aren’t you.”

I flush. “H-how did you know?”

He chuckles. “Everyone knows that you two have feelings for each other.”

I mince my lips and say nothing. I place a hand on the middle bar.

“Everyone’s rooting for you.” He grins and leans closer to me. “I am too.”

“Not Baekhyun.” I says flatly.

He nods in understanding. “Baekhyun and Kai know each other more than any of us do. Maybe it’s just some kind of jealousy between friends.”

I keep quiet. Just jealousy? And that’s enough for him to hit Kai?

“But about Kai.” Chanyeol’s voice drops into a serious tone. “Kai is-”

“Chanyeol!”

I don’t bother to turn around at the new voice. I recognize it as Baekhyun’s, a person I don’t wish to see right now.

“Oh, Baek.” Chanyeol walks over to greet him.

“Ari, did you eat lunch?” I can hear concern in Baekhyun’s voice, but I show no sympathy.

He waits for me to reply and when I don’t, he continues.

“Did you hear about the rumours Chanyeol?” He raises his voice, making sure I can hear him clearly. “Kai is moving.”

I freeze and my grip on the bar hardens.

“He’s moving out of Seoul.” Baekhyun’s voice rings in my ear.

Kai is moving?
