The Flowers You Left For Me.

10 Blood & Pain

Baekhyun’s POV

The weather is bright despite the mood I’m in. I leave the diner for the park where I throw rocks at the pond, getting lost in my thoughts.

Areum and Kai, was it possible that they were-

I shake my head in frustration. No, I can’t let them, Kai can never be with her, he of all people should know this.

“There will be a new student coming to class today kids.” Our teacher said, interrupting my game with Suho. The two of us turned to look at the new kid in the tiny classroom.

“Look at his eyes,” Suho whispered, pointing a finger at him. “He looks so angry.”

I raised an eyebrow but disregarded Suho’s words. I waved the new student over for him to sit next to us and to my surprise, he did.

“My name is Baek.” I held out a hand to him.

He glared at me and smacked my hand away. “I’m Kai. Don’t act so familiar with me.”

Despite his cold attitude towards me, the two of us became the most unlikeliest of friends. Yet my personality wasn’t able to change him.

It was during a lunch recess that I discovered his real personality. One of the other students had asked him to play with him, and I guess, caught him on a bad day. He was suspended from school for a month for putting the other kid in the hospital.

That was when the rumours had started.

Kai had killed a man.

I frown, remembering my childhood and throw a rock into the pond. The rock hits the water with a loud splat and I stand up in anger.

Someone like that, can never be allowed to be with Areum.

-----

Areum’s POV

It’s been almost a week since Kai had last spoken to me. I sit in class letting my eyes dart back and forth between Kai and my desk. Today is the day I will definitely get a word out of him. He’s been tossing me aside since meeting him at his place.

“Areum, let’s go for lunch.” Baekhyun snaps me out of my trance with his hand on my shoulder.

“Hm? No, you go ahead.” I return to staring at Kai.

Baekhyun lingers at my side but after Chanyeol’s continuous whining, leaves for the cafeteria with him. When he’s out of sight, I stand up from my desk and move to Kai’s side. He looks up at me as I lean in closer to him.

“Explain yourself.” I say flatly, staring into his brown eyes.

He avoids my eyes and leaves from his seat. I frown. Before he could leave for the cafeteria, I grab his arm and pull him back into the empty classroom.

“What’s wrong?” There’s desperation in my voice.

He says nothing and stares hard at the black board. I try to weave myself into his line of sight, but he avoids my eyes at all cost. Finally, I lose my patients and give up, crossing my arms, disappointed.

“Why won’t you talk to me?” I say softly. “Was it something I did? Since that day we spent together-”

“Stop,” He cuts me off. “I don’t want to talk about this.”

Without another word, Kai leaves the classroom. Despite how much I want to, I don’t stop him from leaving. Instead, I follow after him and head to the cafeteria where I sit alone for lunch. As I eat, I can feel Baekhyun’s eyes on me from the other side of the room, but he doesn’t come over.

After lunch I return to class letting my heavy feet trail behind me. I enter the class just as the bell rings, only to find that Kai’s desk is empty.

Is he skipping class?

I furrow my brows and turn out of the classroom only to run into Baekhyun. He holds me by the shoulder and peers into my eyes.

“Where are you going? Class is starting.” He says with a quirky smile.

I glare at him. “None of your business.”

He looks offended for a brief moment, but recovers quickly. “Alright, alright, I’ll help you take notes.”

I give him a slight nod and push past him to look for Kai.

I find him eventually up in the roof where he looks out into the distance. I walk up behind him and nudge him on the back.

“Hey, class started you know?”

He spins around in surprise and I’m certain I see a small smile on his lips as he meets my gaze. He hides it and turns away from me, pulling his arms out of my grasp.

Again, again with this. Why do you have to put a wall up against me?

“Go back to class Areum.” Kai mutters.

“No,” I cross my arms. “You don’t tell me what to do.”

I watch him snicker slightly.

“Just talk to me, what’s wrong.” I pry.

There is a moment of silence, and he finally looks at me in the eye. I search for any trace of amusement or happiness. Coming from Kai, you never know what to expect. But from the way he looks at me there is nothing but sadness. Apart from the small smile that plays on his lips, there is nothing but emptiness in his expression.

“Areum,” He pauses. “Why do you do this to me?”

He leans forward and rests his hands on my hips. “Why do you make it so hard for me?”

-----

Kai’s POV

She’s persistent in trying to figure out what’s wrong and I fall weak to her charms. I turn around and pull her to my side.

“Why do you make it so hard for me?”

Her eyes stare into mine without hesitation and it isn’t long before I pull away.

She grabs my arm. “Kai, talk to me.”

I feel the warmth of her body against my arm and I lose it. I shake her off and retreat a few feet away.

“Stop acting so friendly. Just stop!” I bellow.

Her eyes wide in surprise. “What-”

“The way you get to me, the way you act around me, the way you-” Slowly, my eyes cloud with tears. I haven’t noticed it before, but my heart’s beating a mile a minute. Baekhyun’s words echo in my ear.

‘You don’t deserve to be with Areum.’

It’s true, I don’t deserve her. Not with my past.

“Kai!” She bellows and comes up beside me. “Why are you like this?”

There is nothing I can do except slap her hands away. She looks at me startled and I look away. “Areum, let’s just forget everything that happened at my place. Or everything involving us.”

She scoffs. “Forget? Don’t tell me, you didn’t feel anything between-”

“Stop!” I find my hands around the collar of her shirt. “Stop and leave me alone!”

Her eyes on me is unfaltering. “What, you’re just going to deny it?”

“You don’t understand,” I mutter. “You don’t know anything about me.”

“Then tell me.”

Our eyes lock for what feels like forever. Her brown eyes pierce mine, making me feel like pouring everything I know to her. I bite my lip and push her away, feeling like it was the hundreth time I did. Why is she so persistent? Why does she care about me so much?

I let out a grunt of frustration and scratch my head angrily. I step back from her again and stuff my hands into the pocket of my jeans.

“Areum, what if I told you that I once hurt someone so bad, that they almost died?” I say, looking firmly in her eyes. She blinks slightly but doesn’t move from her spot.

My parents died in an accident when I was younger, leaving me alone at the orphanage with no one to rely on. I think it was around that time when I isolated myself and hurt everyone who tried to get close to me. However, there was one person that I let in my life.

She was an older girl that lived next to my orphanage. She visited often and always looked for me to play, frequently bringing me sweets. She was the first person that I opened up to after the accident, which was a mistake.

Her name was Ally and she was beautiful. Her petite features made her stand out in the neighbourhood and everyone knew who she was. She used to tell me that she would get countless love letters at school and I remembered not believing her. Her pretty features might have blinded me from who she really was.

She lied to me.

Every day she told me that my parents weren’t actually dead. She carved it into my brain that my parents were alive and well, and were waiting for me at home. And I, foolishly, believed her.

She made me do things for my parents. Steal from nearby shops, tricking people with my small age. When I found out about what I was doing, it was almost too late, I was caught.

“You stole?” My orphanage coordinator slapped me across the face. “How dare you?”

From the corners of my eyes, I snuck a glance at Ally. To my surprise, she was smiling.

“No, she-”

I was slapped again. “Don’t you dare blame anyone else for your mistake Just because your parents are dead, doesn’t mean you can do whatever you want.”

It felt like I was slapped again.

“My parents are not dead!” I screamed back and lashed out at the coordinator.

“They are dead,” Ally sneered. “How are you so gullible to-”

“No, you couldn’t have.” It took a while for me to understand the situation.“You lied to me?”

I saw red, anger was all that was in my line of sight. I grabbed a nearby plank and attacked Ally with all the rage I could muster.

The next thing I knew, I saw the blood on my hands and the two unconscious body in front of me. The screams of the kids at the orphanage, the look on their faces, everything was vivid and clear. My hands shook as I dropped the bloody wood plank with a thump by my side, my heart was pounding like never before.

Then I saw them. The bodies of my parents suddenly lay before me. Their faces covered with blood and I? I held a knife.

Was I the one that killed my parents?

Ally stayed in the hospital for almost a month but no charges were made. I was put into an institution and a strict temporary home.

That’s when I started building my wall. The wall that no one was able to break.

Except Areum.

She looks at me with pained eyes as I tell her about my past. It came out originally as firm words but slowly, the words washes away until only pieces of it could be heard. My head buzzes with anger as I recall the bloody scene with Ally. My past was something I never wanted to remember.

“Kai.” She shakes my arm and I look at her, suddenly realising I’ve been crying.

“No, Areum.” My voice shook. “You can’t stay with me.”

“Kai, I don’t-”

“NO!” I scream, suddenly feeling pain in my throat. “Stay away, stay away from me.”

I run. I hear her calling my name behind me, but I don’t care.

To this day, I don’t know why I saw my parents died that time. Was I really the one who killed my parents? If it was true, then-

“Areum will never be safe with me by her side.” I find myself in the parking lot in front of my car.

“Never.”

Notes

*COUGH* So... Nancy, or ObsessedFanFics is currently at a concert doing who knows what. But, yeah, here I am to fill in for her place. She wrote the chapter for me to edit in PAST TENSE/// so gimme attention for correcting everything LOL.

And yeah... Kai's past is pretty deep. But more deep than pretty. (wink) okay that sounds like it doesn't make sense, but in a way it does.

AND, not to mention it's TBT throwback thursday... so I just have to.
