Winter's Cabin

The next day I wake up super happy, & I didn't know why. All I knew was today was gonna be a good day. As soon as I get dressed, I head out for school. Since I was in 5th grade, my mother has allowed me to walk to school. It gave me the opportunity to clear my head. Plus, I enjoyed the surroundings of nature & the beautiful landscape. While I was distracted by the abstract view of the birds in the sky, I ran into someone entering the school. I fell on my ass & was stunned. A hand reached out to help me up. Then a voice said "Oh! I'm sorry. Here let me help you." I looked at the person as I grabbed the outreached hand, so they could lift me up. I had ran into an African American male with light complexion & the most gorgeous hazel eyes I had ever seen.
"Are you alright?" he said.
"Uh... Yea, yea. I'm fine. Thank you." I said smiling try to keep from getting flustered.
"Again, I'm sorry. I should've be--"
"Oh! No, no. It was my fault. I got distracted." I interjected.
"Well, I gotta go. I'm sure I'll see you around." he said as he gave me a big smile & ran off.
"Hey! Wait! You didn't tell me your name!" I shouted but he could no longer hear me.
I walked into class right as the bell was about to ring, signaling tardiness. I sat down at my group & began to pull my supplies out as the interrogation began.
"Where were you?" Jungkook asked.
"Yea? We were waiting for you." Nikita said irritated.
"& why were you almost late? What happened?" Vernon said aggravated.
"Guys, calm down. I had a little issue. But I'm here now. So, What's up?" I said reassuringly.
"Issue?" Jungkook questioned "What issue?"
"I just ran into some guy &--." I began.
"Guy? What Guy?" Vernon interrupted me.
"I don't know, just some guy. I've never seen before." I answered.
"Was he cute?" Nikita inquired.
"Yes!" I stated. "But that's besides the point..." I could hear Vernon scoff beside me, as soon as I said that. I didn't understand why he was upset.
"Oooohh! What he look like?" Nikita continued.
As I was about to describe him, the door to the classroom opened & incomes Leo, followed by the boy I had ran into earlier. All the girls swooned over the new kid & I could hear Nikita say "Oooh, cutie alert. Who's that?" I just sat there shocked as Leo took his seat, near our group, while our teacher scolded him for being late. Leo just rolled his eyes & said hello to us. Our teacher turned to the boy, who was just standing there confused on what to do.
"Hello! You must be our new student." he said.
"Yes. Are you Mr. Matkins?" the boy said.
"Yes. Would you mind introducing yourself to the class?"
"I'm Darryl Morris." he said as he surveyed the room, stopping when he noticed me. He gave me a broad smile & I felt Nikita nudge me.
"Girl. Is that the boy you ran into?" she asked.
"Yea." I quickly said.
"Alright." Mr. Matkins said. "Please take a seat anywhere you'd like."
He then quickly took the vacant seat next to me at our group, unloaded his supplies & turned to me & said "I told ya I'd see you around." as he winked at me.
"That I see." I said curtly.
As class went on, I introduced Darryl to everyone else. We then started having a conversation about a bunch of random things. As soon as we got on the topic of religion, Darryl went in. I could see the passion in his eyes as he talked about the bible and his belief in GOD. He was so intoned with scripture, I couldn't help but ask, "So, you're Christian?" To my surprise, he said he wasn't religious affiliated. He didn't like to be labeled with a religion because then that's all people begin to see. Plus, no's perfect & when you fuck up & you're labeled by a religion, people start to look down on you & the religion by which you're labeled.
When it was time for recess, I invited Darryl to join us. I could feel Vernon glaring into the back of my skull, but I ignored him & proceeded to walk out with Darryl. Instead of doing the usual & going to play around on the playground, Darryl & I walked to some nearby tables, followed by Jungkook, Nikita, Leo, & Vernon. We sat down & talked the entire time, teased each other, & joked around. I enjoyed getting to know Darryl.
Learned that he's not much different from the rest of us. He's gon through some issues, just like the rest of us. Darryl moved here with his dad, after his mother had passed away, due to a heart attack. He believes in God because in his grief, the word of the Lord helped him cope with the pain. As he spewed his soul to us I couldn't help but get close to him & comfort him, as my heart broke.
All of a sudden I was being dragged away from the table. When I was done, being pulled by my arm, I got angry & began questioning my captor.
"Vernon? What the hell?!" I began. "Why'd you drag me away from Darryl?"
"You were gettin to close to him." he replied plainly.
"&? You have no right to just drag me. Like who the fuck died & made you king?" I began to rant on angrily.
"Why you being so friendly with someone you just met?" he asked.
"So friendly?? What you mean comforting him?" I asked.
"Yea."
"He was just talking about his mother who passed away." I started to get even more angry.
It was obvious that Vernon was upset but I didn't I didn't understand why, which made me even more irritated. I've never seen Vernon so mad or upset before & I couldn't comprehend what made him mad or why he thought I was the one he could take it out on but I let him know what it was.
"Look, Vernon. I don't know what the fuck's up with you but I aint got time for this." He just sat there pouting, as I spoke. "Now, If you aint got a valid reason as to why you pulled me away, I'd like to get back to my friends." I sat there waiting for him to respond. When he didn't, I turned my back on him & walked off. It hurt my heart to walk away because Vernon & I, since we met in kindergarten, have never fought like this & have always been close.
I sat back down at the table & tried to have stay positive & act like everything was normal but I guess that didn't go to well. Everyone asked me if I was ok & inquired what happened with Vernon. He didn't come back to the table, so they knew something had happened. I told them I was fine & made an excuse as to why Vernon never came back. Before heading to lunch, I stood against a wall pondering what had happened. I looked up & saw Vernon, heading towards me looking sorry, in the distance but before he reached me Darryl came up & asked me if I was alright.
"Yea. I'm fine. Thanks." I smiled at him.
"If you need anything, let me know." he said.
"Ok. I will. Thank you." I said as I hugged him. After our conversation, I couldn't find Vernon, so I just went to lunch with Darryl & we sat & ate lunch with everyone except Vernon. When Katelin came & sat down, she was confused, as she saw Darryl sitting next to me.
"Who's this?" she asked. I could tell there was interest in her voice.
"This is--" I began.
"Darryl. Darryl Morris." he said interrupting me. "& you are?"
"Katelin Ashley. Nice to meet you." she gave a broad smile. She looked around & said "Where's Vernon?"
"He's not eating with us today." I said with a sigh.
"Why?"
"I'd rather not talk about it."
"Ok..."
The rest of the day way awkward with Darryl on one side & Vernon on another. Still upset with Vernon, I talked to Darryl, Nikita, & Leo the rest of the time we had in class. Vernon & Jungkook talked to each other & seemed alright. The bell rang & school was over. I said my goodbyes to everyone & as I grabbed my bag & headed out the classroom to go home, Vernon stopped me.
"What do you want?" I asked upset.
"Look. I'm sorry about earlier."
"What was that about?"
"I don't know. I just got really upset."
"For what?" Then it hit me, "Were you jealous?" I said with a mischievous smile.
"No! Of course not!" he said, face turning red.
"Awww! You were jealous." I said laughing "That's so cute!" I added.
"Shut up!" he said blushing.
"Vernon, you don't have to worry about anybody else coming between us." I tried to reassure him. "Nobody's gonna break the bond we have. Got me?" I said sternly, looking into his eyes.
He smiled & started to walk home. On our way home we talked & cracked jokes. When we reached our break off point, we hugged & went our separate ways. My heart fluttered for a little while, after we split ways & my smile returned to normal. Today was highly eventful.
