Trouble Comes & Goes
-Flash 5 Years Forward-
It was the beginning of 5th grade year & the crew had already gotten into some trouble. We’ve had each other in every class since kindergarten, so, because we’re so close, we’re very lively. We’re known to everyone else as The Hype Squad; for those outsider looking in, we’re the popular ones. Waiting for the dean, as usual, we sat in the lounge room and talked. Hanging in the lounge room is better than one could imagine; it’s decked out real nice like a staff room. Decorated with couches, circular tables, vending machine, a fridge, even a microwave I wouldn’t mind getting in trouble. For summer vacation, Jungkook took dance classes & hung out at the local Boys & Girls Club all summer, like he’s done since summer of 1st grade. Nikita spent most of her vacation cleaning, like always. On the rare occasions she did go out, she spent it with me & Vernon, at the local pool. As for Vernon & I, aside from the pool, we spent the entire summer hanging out, going place. Wherever we could go, we did. From the movies to the gym, the skate park to the Rec Center, & from going out to eat to even camping. It was a great summer over all.
However, there were a few days were Vernon got in trouble & we couldn’t hang out, which were extremely boring. The days he spent babysitting his little sister, Sofia Choi Hangyeol, I went & hung out with them. Sofia is such an adorable toddler. His father officially got married winter break, during kindergarten. The wedding ceremony & reception was gorgeous. They had it around the Christmas season, so it was pretty much a white wedding with a splash of pastel blue thrown in. They were giving away adorable little keepsakes that Vernon’s grandmother, on his father’s side, made. My parents & I had been invited because Vernon & I had become close friends & so did our parents. Sofia was born in 2004, nearly a year later. She’s a smart & independent little girl, she reminds me of myself at her age. My favorite part of the summer was whooping Vernon’s ass in Water Basketball & hanging with his little sister.
In the midst of our conversation, a boy, round our age came in & sat down. Headphones in, music blaring. He had moron hair & a seductive baby face. He dressed like a typical bad boy with a pale-blue V-neck, a black blazer over it, deep black pants & tied it all together with black vans. I could tell, from being friends with Nikita & Jungkook, that he was Korean, just like Jungkook. Immediately, I was intrigued but not as much as Nikita. Her jaw dropped, in amazement.
“Who. Is. That?” she said mesmerized.
“Close your mouth.” Jungkook told her.
“Yea, stop drooling.” Vernon added.
“I’m not drooling!” Nikita replied, turning around, checking.
“Why you checking then?” Vernon asked.
“Y’all leave my best friend alone.” I ordered, laughing.
At that moment, the dean walked in, saw the boy & sarcastically said “Look whose back in my office for the 20th time this year.” The boy didn’t reply, he just walked into the office with the dean right behind him. After 10 minutes, the boy walked out of the dean’s office & started heading back to class. When the door opened, our heads turned in unison & we watched as he headed out. Before he officially left, he turned to us, like he sensed our eyes, & winked, which made Nikita squeal & made him laugh.
The dean welcomed us into his office with a warm smile. “So…What did you guys do to end up here?”
“Nothing. The teacher just don’t like squad.” Vernon said with a straight face. The rest of us couldn’t help but bust out laughing.
“Ok.” the dean chuckled. “Well, that aside, why did your teacher said you here?” he said looking in my direction.
“To be honest Curtis…” I said, calling the dean by his first name. He gave me a stern look, so I corrected “I’m sorry, Mr. Jackson. We’re here because we were talking.
“I see.” he said.
“Yea, but the entire class was talking.” Jungkook said.
“Ms. just singled us out because we were slightly louder.” Nikita added.
“Hmmm…” the dean said, looking confused “Now that don’t make sense. I understand why you said she doesn’t like ‘squad’.” he said towards Vernon.
“Told ya.” Vernon stated.
After he asked us a few questions, on how things are going so far, he sent us back to class. Since there were only 5 minutes left in class, before break, we decided not to head to class & just walked around. As we walked around we ran into the boy we saw, from the dean’s office, earlier. He was leaning against a wall, one leg cocked, headphones in. When he looked up, he took a headphone out & called out to us.
“Hey!” he shouted.
“Wassup?” Vernon replied.
“Did y’all have fun in the dean’s?” he said with a smile.
“We always do.” Jungkook chuckled.
“Oh, for real?” he asked with a smirk. “What was y’all up there for?”
“Our teacher don’t like us.” I said, feeling left out.
He laughed at my remark & the demeanor by which I gave it. “You’re a feisty one, ain’t ya?”
“I just tell it like it is.”
“I see.” he said, wearing an impressed look. “What’s your name?”
“The name’s Dupree. Janet Dupree.” I said shaking his hand. His hands felt so soft, it was like touching a pillow. “& this is Vernon…”
“Sup.” Vernon said as I gestured to him.
“Jungkook…” I said pointing him out.
“Hey.”
Before I could even introduce Nikita, the boy interjected. “Then you must be Nikita.” he said grabbing her hand & kissing its back.
“Yea… How’d you know that?” Nikita asked.
“I’ve heard a lot about you.” he began. “Word on the street is: y’all are a big deal.” he added, looking around at us.
“Well, duh.” I said “Of course we are!”
“Since you know so much bout us, mind telling us who you are?” Vernon said with intent.si
"Oh, I'm sorry" he pause & looked my direction "The name's Wyatt. Leo Wyatt." he announce, taking a page out of my book.
The bell had rung for break to begin. We invited Leo to hang with us during break. As we were conversing a girl ran up & said hello to Leo. The girl was gorgeous; she a short, blond-haired, hazel eyed, white girl. She was wearing a red-laced dress & two necklaces. One necklace was a chocker with a ying charm attached to it. The other was a long, beaded necklace with the tree of life symbol at the end.
"Hey, Katelin!" Leo said with a smile. "How ya been?"
"I've been great & yourself" she said.
"Good." he replied.
The girl, known as Katelin, looked behind Leo, in our direction & said "I see you've made some new friend."
"Oh! Yea." he said "Katelin, I like you to meet Hype Squad."
We laughed as he introduced us to her by our infamous name. The name was coined by our past teachers. Since we're so close knit & get along so well, it tends to be hard for us to settle down & be quiet. We're always rowdy & talkative when we're together & we're always together, hence the name. We stay turnt, especially since we the class clown.
"Oh woow!" she said in shock. "You actually met them." she was in such a state of shock her eyes were bug-eyed.
"Of course I did." he said with confidence. "I told ya I would. Here let me properly introduce ya." he added "This is Vernon, Jungkook, Nikita & ..."
"& you must be Janet?" she said cutting Leo off. "I've heard soo much about y'all."
"From the looks of it, everyone has." Vernon said.
"It's been all over the grape vine." Jungkook added.
"Shit. We should be on Ellen." Nikita said jokingly.
"Nah, Fuck Ellen. We should have our own TV serious." I state.
"You guys could call it 'In the Life of Hype Squad' or 'Hype Squad Unleashed'." Katelin inputted.
"& I could guess star." Leo added jokingly.
We laugh so hard, I thought we was gon die. Talk about dyin from laughter. I couldn't help but think how funny these two were. They'll be some great assets in the future.
"So..." I began. "How do you two know each other?"
"We've been friends since kindergarten." Leo said looking at Katelin with great affection.
Their bond reminded me of the bond I have with Vernon, Jungkook, & Nikita. We've also been friends that long & I wouldn't trade them for the world. As an outsider looking in you would think Leo & Katelin had a thing for each other. I knew Nikita liked Leo, so I looked in her direction. She was shooting daggers at Katelin, as she hugged Leo. All I could think was 'Oh shit.' I wasn't the only one who caught that vibe, Jungkook caught it too & flat out asked them.
"Y'all like each other?"
"Woah!" Katelin said backing away.
"Nah, Nah, Nah. It ain't nothin like that." Leo stated, shocked.
I could faintly hear Nikita say 'good' under her breath before laughing at their reactions. The teachers blow their whistles, signaling lunch time. We invited Katelin & Leo to eat with us. When we had all gotten our lunch, we sat down at our usual lunch table & began talking.
Katelin spewed with sweetness. She brought a positive atmosphere around & there were good vibes spread. Her short ball of adorableness could fool anyone at first glance, she's a feisty one. She likes to instigates fights with her shit talking. Leo says she's real & keeps it 100, but we'll find that out on our own. Katelin lives with her mother & two older siblings. Her dad lives with them, but his work keeps him on the road, so he's never home. Her siblings are both older than her; she's got an older brother & sister, making her the youngest among the three. They live in an apartment complex, around the corner from the school.
Leo, on the other hand, was a completely different story. All that was revealed was that he was an only child who lived between homes. His parents had gotten divorced a while back. As proven in the dean's office, he gets in trouble a lot. Leo told us stories about all the things that he's done & I couldn't believe it; I envied the freedom he had. Other than that, he was mysterious & highly secretive person & I loved a challenge. I was gonna discover his secrets.
