Winter's Cabin
Vernon
-Flashback-
It was finally the first official day of school. No more daycare. No more pre-school. I was finally going to be starting kindergarten. I had been to a three different schools before I started kindergarten at Casanova Elementary, which was set up to go all the way up to the 6th grade, but I was still pretty nervous for the first day of school. My anxiety was unlike me because I have always been a very outgoing and confident person. All I could do was wonder whether or not I was going to make new friends or if the teachers were going to be fun and outgoing, like me.
“What’s wrong Janet?” my mother asked out of concern, while she drove my older brother, Aristotle, and I to our first day of school “Are you nervous about your first big day? You’re finally going to a big girl school now!” she continued, trying to sound enthusiastic.
“What are you talking about?” I stated, trying to pretend like I didn’t have butterflies. “I’m just hoping to make a whole bunch of new friends! These teacher better be nice to the point of not givin me any homework.” I continued “’Cause, you already know, Ima pull that deaf-card on her.” I said jokingly.
Every started laughing.
“You’re stupid!” my brother said laughing.
“No I’m not! You’re stupid.” I said offended by the statement.
“Don’t get your panties in a not, it was just a joke.” Aristotle stated.
“That wasn’t funny.” I said pouting.
Finally arriving at school, I kissed my mother goodbye and went to walk around and check out the school grounds. First, I immediately went to check out the playground. When I got to there, I was in awe. There were so many things for me to play with; from swings to monkey bars to a toy keyboard, which actually played music. Just by viewing the school grounds, I could tell I was gonna like it there.
“Wooow!” I gasped “This is dope! I think I’m gonna like it here.”
Riiing!!!
The sound of the bell for class rang out. Smiling, I walked to class. Caught in my thoughts, I ran into someone, knocking their things out of their hands. I scrambled to hurry and help pick up their belongings, apologizing profusely. When I looked up it was a boy, about my age, he was quite good-looking with his baby face features. He didn’t say anything, he just grabbed his things and hurried to class. I thought it was rude but I didn’t have time to ponder that thought, I needed to go to class. I walked to class where my teacher greeted me, warmly.
“Hello! I am Ms. Green and you are?” she said with great enthusiasm.
Pretending to read her lips (just in case I needed to pull the deaf-card), I replied a few seconds later while I signed “The names Dupree. Janet Dupree. It’s nice to meet you.” giving a big smile.
“Nice to make your acquaintance, as well” Ms. Green replied looking confused.
I took a seat in the front of the class, at a corner desk, next to this boy, who was actually really cute, as Ms. Green came to the front of the class.
“Good morning class! My name is Ms. Green. How is everyone doing today?” but the class remained quiet. Ms. Green then repeated “Good morning class! How is everyone doing today?”
“Good!” the class shouted in unison.
“Thank you. Well, since today is the first day of school, we’re going to start the class off by doing a little ice-breaker.” she stated. “With the person next to you, I want you to introduce yourself. Let them know your name, birthday, and your favorite hobby.”
“What’s a hobby?” a girl asked, raising her hand. I was actually glad she asked because I had no clue either.
“A hobby is something you like to do for fun. For instance, when you’re bored and have nothing else to do.”
As I turned to the boy beside me, with a big smile, I froze. He had also turned toward me with a big grin. His smile was like staring at a beautiful piece of artwork that just captivated you, immediately. I was so mesmerized that I didn’t notice him trying to get my attention.
*Snap, snap* “Hello----?!“ he yelled.
“Oh! I’m sorry.” I said, turning away in embarrassment.
“What were you doing? Spacing out?” he asked.
“Ummm… yeah. Something like that.” I replied. I obviously couldn’t tell him I got starstrucked looking at his smile.
“Okay then.” he paused “Do you wanna start? Or are you gonna space out aga--?”
“I’ll go.” I hurriedly said, cutting him off “My name’s Dupree. Janet Dupree. I was born August 7, 1998. & I don’t have a hobby, I just like to do a variety of things.”
“Nice to meet you!” he smiled “I’m Hansol Vernon Chwe, but you can call me Vernon…” he said with a wink.
I froze again as my heart pounded. ‘Vernon that’s such a unique name for such an adorable person’ I thought as my heart continued to pound & I tried to continue to listen to him speak with interest.
“I was born February 18, 1998. So, y’kno I’m older.” he bragged sticking his tongue out at me.
“Shut up.” I said rolling my eyes, as we laughed.
“& I don’t really have a hobby either. As long as I’m out of the house, I’m down for whatever.”
“Me too!” I exclaimed. We then high-fived each other, as Ms. Green addressed the class.
“Ok class.” she said after clapping in a rhythmic pattern, in order to get our attention. “Now, I’m gonna ask that each of you share your partner to the class.” she continued. “Which group would like to go first?”
Vernon & I looked at each other with great intent. We raced to raise our hands first. I tried to be faster than Vernon but his height & speed left me with a slight disadvantage.
“Alright, you two can go.” Ms. Green said gesturing to us.
We stood up together, so the class could see us. “This is Janet.” Vernon began “She was born on the 7th of August in ’98. & she doesn’t have a specific thing that she likes to do.”
“& this is Vernon.” I began, gesturing to him. “He was also born in ’98 on February 18th. & much like myself he doesn’t have a hobby. As long as he’s not stuck home, he’s down for anything.”
“Excellent work, you two! Here’s a piece of candy for being brave enough to go first.” our teacher said as she threw us, each, a jolly rancher.
Vernon caught both of ours. “Here.” He said handing me a blue one.
“Yay! My fav!” I said smiling excitedly “Thank you!”
“That was a blue one?!” he said shocked. “Give it back.” He jokingly said as he reached for it.
“No.” I said, popping it into my mouth, laughing.
“How rude!” he gasped. “Nah, I’m playing with you but you’re welcome!” he said smiling back, making my heart pound again.
As we enjoyed our candy, everyone else introduced their partners, expecting a reward that they weren’t getting. We spent the rest of class, before recess, talking & having fun & making jokes, in between each lesson. Since we were in kindergarten, we learned the twelve months & the alphabet. Ms. Green taught us to memorize them using song. I love the song she used for the alphabet:
“A B C D E, school is where I want to be. F G H I J, learning new things every day. K L M N O, brand new friends for me to know. P Q R S T, lots of books for you & me. U V W X Y, time to go away goodbye. Z Z Z Z Z, school is where I want to be. Yea, school is where I want to be.”
