Baek and Baek Only

Baek and Baek Only

Moonri was walking down the halls with her stoic gaze looking forward. Her gaze that scared many. No one was brave enough to confront her to act like a normal person or tell her how much they hated her. She knew what they all thought about her, but she didn’t care, for these students around her would not be important to her in the future.

She walked to her locker and grabbed her needed books for her next class. She closed her locker and heard multiple squeals of different pitches coming from the end of the hallway. She turned the opposite way of the noises and walked towards her classroom. Her steps her precise and soft, as if she were a woman who knew things, in her case she did.

The farther she walked the more the loud noises died out. She reached her classroom and sat in the exact same spot that she had been sitting in for the last four years. She set her books down and picked up the smallest one and turned to page 264. She began reading. Her stoic face never changed.

Those squeals began to grow louder again. Moonri ignored them and continued on with her business.

“Okay, I’ll see you tomorrow night,” a deep and seductive voice spoke.

“See you, Baekhyunnie.”

Moonri had the urge to throw up her breakfast, but kept her composure.

The said “Baekhyunnie” walked into the classroom and took a seat by Moonri; his seat that he had been sitting in for the last four years.

“So, it’s our last year as desk-mates. I’m gonna miss you,” he said.

Moonri said nothing as she kept her eyes on the book before.

Baekhyun put an elbow on his desk as he rested his cheek on his palm. He stared as her with lustful eyes.

“You know, I’ve never heard your voice before. We’ve been deskmates for four long years, yet you never talked. I used to think that you were a mute until a friend of mine said that you had the voice of an angel.”

Moonri never looked up to talk to Baekhyun or acknowledge his presence.

“As you heard earlier, I have a date with some girl tomorrow night, but I’m thinking of canceling it to be with you. Why don’t we get to know each other before graduation? Or do I have to wait until graduation to hear you beautiful voice when you give your speech for being ranked first in our grade since you were born?” Baekhyun smirked.

Moonri saw no reason as to why he was trying to strike a conversation with her. It hasn’t been the first time that he has failed.

“You know if you hang around me, people won’t hate you anymore. I have the power to make them like you,” he smiled.

Moonri closed her book and set it down. Baekhyun gave her an amused look, finally thinking that she was going to say something, but instead she took out her notebook and looked forwards. Baekhyun pouted and followed her gaze. His eyes widened. The teacher was already present and everyone in the classroom was staring at Baekhyun. He laughed awkwardly and rubbed the nape of his neck

“Now, I will start class if you are done, Mr. Byun.”

Baekhyun nodded once.

~~~
Moonri looked at the dark sky as it cried. She held onto the bags of groceries in her hand tighter as she quietly sighed.
Why now?
She didn’t bring an umbrella or hoodie, so she was going to get wet for sure. She reached for her phone in her pocket and tried calling her parents, but no one answered as always. Why did she even try? Her dad was probably out at some business meeting while her mother was out with her colleagues. They weren’t bad parents, they were actually very caring ones, they just thought that Moonri was capable enough of taking care of herself.
Moonri mentally cursed herself for not coming with her driver. Being the independent girl she was, she never needed anyone’s help.
She shrugged her shoulders and just decided to walk home. She wouldn’t be able to catch a taxi in this part of town. She walked on in the rain, but stopped when she heard a grunt and a familiar name.
“You better stay away from her, Byun Baekhyun. She’s my girl. You can’t have everyone you want!”
Moonri stood there, staring into space. She thought about just walking forwards, but then she looked to her side and saw a him laying on the ground with one arm over his stomach. Three guys stood in front of him while the “girl” whom Baekhyun claimed to be spending the night yesterday with was hovered over Baekhyun.
“Oppa, are you okay?” she asked.
“Nayoung! Get up! I told you to stop messing with other guys. You’re mine. The next time I see you with him, he’s dead.”
Nayoung’s eyes widened as she stood up. The man grabbed Nayoung’s arm and began walking out of the alley.
Moonri just stayed in her spot staring at the figure in the rain, lying on the ground. The three guys and Nayoung paid her no attention as they walked passed her and into a nearby car. When they left Moonri made her way towards the weak Baekhyun whom was trying to stand up.
Moonri quietly sighed and bent down to help him. Baekhyun’s eyes widened, as he thought that it was those three guys. He pushed her away. She fell backwards. She caught herself with her hands, scraping them on the concrete ground. She winced at the pain, but kept silent.
“I’ll stay away from her, just st-”
Baekhyun looked up at stopped his sentence when he saw who it was.
“Moonri?” his voice was soft and confused.
Moonri stood up. The bags of groceries were now useless, as they were all wet and dirty. She threw them into a nearby dumpster and walked to Baekhyun. Baekhyun just quietly watched her as she tried to help him stand. She put his arm around her shoulders and began walking out of the alley. It was quiet as Baekhyun felt embarrassed for looking weak in front of someone, especially a girl. Baekhyun sighed. Moonri stopped walking once they were out of the alley, she looked left and right, not sure which way to go.
Baekhyun looked down at her. His heart skipped a beat as he saw her up close.
“Where is your house?” her quiet voice asked.
Baekhyun’s eyes widened. The pitter patter of the raindrops on the the concrete were loud, but Baekhyun still heard her.
“M-My apartment?” he asked.
“Ah, so you live alone now. I would’ve figured since you brought home a different girl every night.”
Baekhyun just stared at her. Moonri looked up at him in the eyes.
“So, are you going to tell me or not?” she asked again.
“O-Oh, left.”
Moonri turned left and began walking.
~~~

They reached his apartment. Baekhyun gave her his keys and she opened the door. She closed the door with her foot and dragged Baekhyun to his couch. Moonri looked around, surprised that his home was clean. They were both drenched. Moonri set Baekhyun on the couch in a sitting position and sat beside him. They both just sat there, trying to catch their breaths.

Moonri sighed and stood up.

“Where is your first aid kit?” she asked.

Baekhyun looked up at her.

“It’s under the T.V.”

Moonri nodded and got the first aid kit. She walked towards Baekhyun and sat down next to him. She opened a bottle of ibuprofen and made him eat two. She took out a q-tip with hydrogen peroxide on the tips. She looked at Baekhyun’s eyebrows. He had a little cut on the side of his right eye, but his wet bangs were in the way. She kept her eyes on his eye as she carefully moved his bangs out of the way. She cleaned his cut as she blew on it. Baekhyun winced when she cleaned it. He stared at her the entire time. The close distance made his heart beat race.

Moonri finished and put some ointment on it followed by a band-aid.

Still no words were exchanged.

Moonri returned her attention to the kit and searched for more q-tips. She looked at Baekhyun’s face again and found that he had a busted lip. She sighed and shook her head. Baekhyun blushed out of embarrassment and put his head down as if he were getting scolded by his mother. Moonri gently grabbed his chin and pulled it upwards. She focused hard on his lips as she carefully cleaned his wound.

She finished and continued onto his arm.

Baekhyun quietly watched her. He was getting confused. Why was the perfect and scary quiet girl of Seoul High tending to his wounds? Especially since he had always been cocky with her at school. His heart was racing for her. It kind of scared him. No one has ever made him feel this way, except one. He was scared. What if he couldn’t resist the urge to take advantage of her? What if she falls for him and he hurts her? That was some of the reason’s why he never dated. He was scared to hurt someone. Yeah, he broke many girl’s hearts, but he didn’t want to break the heart of someone he loved.

But, the more that he looked at her, the more he felt like he knew her from before the time that they spent in high school.

It was quiet for a long time. So long that it was bothering Baekhyun. Moonri’s presence was bothering him. He didn’t want to fall for this girl. For there was another reason why he never dated; he was waiting for a certain someone. But, even if he met that certain someone, he was pretty sure that she wouldn’t accept him for how he was now.

“Why are you here?” he finally asked breaking the suffocating silence.

“I’m helping you.”

Baekhyun grabbed Moonri’s hand that was cleaning the wound on his arm and pinned it to the side of her head on the couch. His body hovered over hers. He smirked, but she did nothing, except just stare at him with her same stoic face.

“Aren’t you afraid that I’ll take your virginity?” he asked, wanting her to leave before he really did just that.

He felt like Moonri was different from the others. She was pure and not wanting him for his looks, money, and power. He wanted to prove that.

“Baek wouldn’t do that,” she said.

Baekhyun’s eyes widened.

“W-What did you just call me?” he asked.

“But, he’s gone now,” Moonri said.

Baekhyun stared at her with his eyebrows furrowed.

Baek?

Only one person called him that. The one person that he had always been waiting for.

“Take a shower Baekhyun, you’ll get a cold. You can’t go meet all those girls if you’re sick.”

Baekhyun didn’t know why, but he felt offended. He pinned her hands harder into the couch, only causing her to wince. His eyes widened as they traveled up to her hands. They were bleeding. He quickly looked down at her worried and let go of her.

“You idiot! You should’ve told me that you were hurt!” he yelled as he looked through the kit.

He found some ointment and bandages. He began cleaning and dressing her wounds.

Moonri quietly watched him as a small smile made its way onto her lips.

Baek, she thought.

He finished and walked into his room. Moonri looked at him confused as he came back with a towel and clothes. He threw the clothes onto her lap.

“Go take a shower before you catch a cold. I have a bathroom in my room, so you don’t have to worry about me,” he said.

Moonri looked at the towel and clothes in her lap and smiled, but it disappeared as she looked up at Baekhyun and nodded.

~~~
Moonri finished her shower. She dried her hair with the blow dryer and brushed out her straight hair. She was wearing a white dress shirt that stopped at her mid-thighs and a pair of Baekhyun’s boxers. She looked at herself in the mirror and smiled.
She walked out of the bathroom into the living room. Baekhyun still hadn’t come out yet. She began cleaning up the mess that they made and walked into the kitchen. She looked through his fridge and cabinets, and then she began cooking.
Baekhyun finished his shower and dried his hair. He put on a t-shirt and sweatpants. He looked at himself in the mirror and sighed.
Baek.
That word repeated in his head.
Baek.
He ran his fingers through his brown locks and sighed.
He walked into his bedroom and plopped down onto his bed. He closed his eyes as he let the warmth of his bed engulf him. It was winter so he had the heater in his apartment turned on.
He smelt something and sat straight up. He looked towards his door. He stood up and walked out of his room into the kitchen. Moonri was washing the dishes. He looked at the kitchen table and saw two plates set out with kimchi fried rice on them. His eyes widened as he remembered his mom cooking that for him and her whenever they were kids. It was his and hers favorite food, and it still was now, for him anyways.
He slowly walked towards the kitchen table and pulled out a chair to sit down. Moonri turned around when she heard him. She walked to the fridge and took out two bottles of water and set one down next to him. She sat at the opposite side of him and began eating.
Baekhyun occasionally looked at her, wanting to ask her a question he always had on his mind when he saw her.
“M-Moonri, you always tell the truth, so...why do people love me and hate you? You’re pretty and have the money-”
“Because you are a beautiful lie and I’m the painful truth. You hide your lies behind your beautiful outerior. I am the truth inside, yet I am painful to people on the outside. It is like having thorns on my body. But, you, you are beautiful on the outside. Everyone wants to touch you. Everyone that does doesn’t get hurt as much as if they were to touch me.”
“But, I touched you, and I’m not hurt.”
“Because you’re not Casanova Baekhyun right now.”
“W-what?” he asked.
Moonri said no more as she just continued eating, and just like that no more words were exchanged.
When they finished Baekhyun stood up and grabbed her plate.
“I’ll wash the dishes,” he said.
Moonri shook her head.
“I’ll do them,” she said.
“No, I’ll do them, you should rest. Do you want me to take you home?” he asked.
Moonri looked at him the eyes as if she was trying to read him. Baekhyun swallowed hard and stared back at her. A tint of red appeared on his cheeks, as Moonri never retreated her gaze.
“Can I stay the night?” she asked.
Baekhyun’s eyes widened.
“I’ll sleep on the couch,” she said.
Baekhyun blinked multiple times.
“U-Uh, o-of c-c-course you can stay. B-but the couch is wet and I don’t have a bed in the guest room.”
Moonri looked down.
“It’s fine, I’ll sleep on the floor,” she said.
“No, you can sleep on my bed. I have a sleeping bag.”
Moonri looked at him and nodded.
Baekhyun turned around and walked to the sink. When she walked out of the kitchen he sighed and place his hand over his heart to calm it down.
When he finished he walked into his bedroom only to find Moonri already in his bed. His eyebrows furrowed. Why did it seem like she had no problem finding her way around his home, as if it were hers? Baekhyun shrugged it off even though a part of him was angry that she was acting like this. Was this not her first time spending a night at a guy’s house?
Baekhyun walked to his closet and pulled out his sleeping bag.
Thunder roared. It was still raining. Baekhyun jumped and mentally slapped himself for being scared.
He closed his closet and was about to walk out of his room, but was stopped by Moonri.
“Baek, can you sleep with me? It’s cold, and you don’t like thunderstorms,” her soft voice said.
His eyes widened.
So she did call me Baek. And how did she know that I didn’t like thunderstorms?
Baekhyun turned around and looked at her.
She had a small smile on her lips. She removed the blanket and patted the empty space next to her.
“Please?” she said.
Baekhyun shook his head.
“I-I can’t. It’s not right for a girl and guy to-”
“Please, just tonight. I promise I won’t tell anyone,” she said.
Baekhyun was confused. Maybe he had read her wrong. Maybe she was like everyone else.
Baekhyun made his way towards the bed and got in next to her. She turned off the lamp that was next to the bed. The only light was coming from the moon that was half blocked by the dark clouds. Baekhyun didn’t know what to do. He just kept on staring at her. Moonri’s eyes were closed. She looked comfortable and unaffected that a man was sleeping beside her. She even snuggled closer to him, smelling his scent. She smiled.
Baekhyun’s heart sped up as he felt Moonri move in closer to him. He swallowed hard. He had to control himself. He slowly pushed her away.
“M-Moonri, I don’t know what you want but-”
Moonri reached up and kissed Baekhyun, silencing him. His eyes doubled in size. Moonri pulled back and smiled.
“W-What d-did you do that for?!” he yelled.
“I wanted to give my first kiss to my first love before he left me again, before he left this world, before he ceased to exist. Because tomorrow when we both wake up, he will be gone. I wish that he wouldn’t leave, but he will. My, Baek,” she said. “It’s me, Baek. Moonri. Han Moonri.”
A tear fell from her cheek.
“You forgot me, didn’t you?” she asked.
She smiled sadly as she got off the bed. She looked back down at him. He had a shocked look on his face.
“I want to leave before he leaves. I don’t think I can wait for him anymore.”
She began walking towards the door to get out of his room. Baekhyun shot up and ran towards her. He hugged her from the back.
Tears began streaming down his cheeks.
“M-Moonri?” he asked.
Moonri smiled and nodded.
Baekhyun squeezed her tighter.
“Moonri?” he sobbed. “My Moonri?”
“Mm, Baek. My Baek.”
Baekhyun turned her around and hugged her again.
“Is it really you?” he asked.
“You never forgot me?”
“I-I’m so sorry I didn’t recognize you. I’ve been waiting for you for so long. I-I thought-”
Moonri pulled away from the hug and tip toed. She brought her lips up to his and kissed him again. She pulled back from the kiss and held him close. She rested her head on his chest, listening to his quick heartbeat.
“Are you going to leave again and become Casanova Baekhyun again?” she asked quietly.
Baekhyun shook his head.
“No, Baek will only stay from now on with you,” he hiccupped. “Baek and Baek only.”
Moonri smiled.
“Mm, Baek and Baek only.”
