What is love

Yankee

Brain-racking nervousness, weak knees, sweat beading at the forehead
Min was definitely expecting this behavior, especially on this early morning.Today is her first day at her new academy, nothing too bad, but the fact that her, a person who grew up in the lowly half of the suburbs, is going to be surrounded by kids who got what they wanted high quality and all with the snap of their fingers made her head pound endlessly. She had gotten accepted into AJN academy, a school within the cluster of the top ten schools in Asia, right here in Seoul, South Korea. It was wonderful really even if she had no idea what to expect. Hell, she didn’t even know what the letters in AJN stood for. All she knew is that the better part of her life was just ahead of her.
Min has never been any more excited in her life, nevertheless nervous. She could feel her palms tingling with enthusiasm that she hadn’t felt in years. Even the acceptance letter she carried in her left hand began to shake, she couldn’t believe it. She had flew in from Los Angeles and landed in Seoul a few hours ago and now was going to turn a street corner to get to the academy where she was to stay for a few years. It was like she visited a new place every time she came to Korea though she had been her several times and knew her way around like she lived here, it was quite different from the usual. Los Angeles was larger than Seoul definitely but the city was busier. Honking horns of cars everywhere, the yelling of people in Korean of course, and the shuffling of feet along the pavement. While this would seem noisy and uncomfortable to most people, Min actually adored it.
“This is it.” Min grinned to herself as she followed a huge group of students she assumed to be attending the large building in front of her, where she heard the chatter of people on campus.
The building was made of dull red brick with off-white plywood placed perfectly around the edges of windows which also happened to be pristine. It was large, Min would have guessed it had four stories, or maybe even five. The school building was very “classic”, it was the type of school they’d describe in settings from the 1800s except for the modernization of technology and so on. To sum it up, it’s a stereotypical “wealthy” school. Figures.
Her bag was perfectly neat, slung over her shoulder with pride. Her hair was cutely cut, just hanging above her shoulders. Her uniform was neatly pressed and washed as well prepared before hand along with her black shoes that she cleaned seven times in total. She definitely looked like she was civilized and dressed properly but compared to the kids around her, she was wearing frayed and tattered rags.
The students around her had their uniforms sequined with real gold, necklaces with real diamonds like you’d only see on shopping channels, and backpacks made of a strong satin fabric in such a fresh state that Min has never ever seen in her life. “Whoops, I forgot. This is a “rich kid” school.” Min grumbled as herself confidence that had gradually been building up for days shattered at her feet in under five seconds. And to add to the overwhelming situation, she earned herself weird looks from students who eyed her attire up and down cautiously, as if they were disgusted by Min at first sight. Min shot back a look filled with dismay for she was already in a bad mood that practically growled at them through her eyes.
Min was about to continue this until the attention was cast off of her until she ran face first into a bunch of hardback textbooks. She stumbled backwards and fell on her butt with her hair flying in her face which blocked the sight of the person who glowered over her. “Hey! Watch it stupid bitch, you’re gonna mess up my new shoes I bought yesterday,” scowled a whiny voice from above. Min shuddered back at her rude tone expecting it to belong to an annoying looking girl with glasses all the way up on her stupid nose like the girls she had seen at her old school however, she was the total opposite. She had long, brown hair, bright eyes, and a glow to her face that made her seem like one of those famous movie stars with a killer smile. Except, without the killer smile, instead, she wore a killer frown. Min was definitely in the worst situation to admire someone’s face but she couldn’t help it, she was that beautiful. “Are you gonna keep staring at my face or pick up my books? I know I’m beautiful but make this quick!” she spat fixing her hair that now blew flawlessly in the cold, October wind. “Sorry,” Min mumbled nervously in English, not even remembering that she was to speak Korean. Min knew and studied five different languages hard, including Korean (from the benefit of her mother), yet she would confuse them all the time. “Wait… did you just speak English?” she said then smirked in an evil way. Min knew that smirk too well. From her past experiences at her old school, she sensed that she was about to be picked on.
Min scrunched her eyes closed waiting for, “shorty”, or some insult like that to hit her face harder than the gradually heavying wind slapping at her face. Surprisingly, it wasn’t. It was something she hadn’t heard in a long time, something she only heard when she travelled abroad. “Yankee.” she cooed with a tinge of cruelty making Min bite her lip in sadness. The word wasn’t that insulting but every time it was directed at Min, it made her stomach churn with fear and hurt. Her self-confidence wouldn’t be back with her for awhile. So, Min slowly placed the books in the girl’s hands ready to walk away quickly so she didn’t drag any attention towards herself. Unfortunately, the opposite of what she was aiming for occurred.
The girl caught her by her collar and pulled her back causing a crowd to quickly form around the two girls. “Dammit,” she cursed again in English involuntarily bring laughter about the students’ throats, including the girl she ran into. “Did you just speak English again? Do you not know how to speak Korean,” she cackled pushing Min over onto her side. That push was harder than she expected, despite the girl’s small frame and slim arms. She started to hurt all over, even in the places where she didn’t get direct contact on and her heavy bag made it worse by landing on the shin she just fell on. She felt dust fly up from the patted-in gravel onto her face bringing about louder laughter from the crowd. “Listen here Yankee, don’t ever cross my path again, do you hear me?” she hissed grabbing Min by the collar once again emphasizing her words to become threatening which completely work. Min nodded in fear before awkwardly running off knowing she fucked up within five minutes of her presence on campus. Without any hesitation, she scurried into the building with tears threatening to fall from her eyes onto her first class.
"Idiot girl messed up my pink, velvet blouse dammit,"

-FLASHBACK: (a few weeks ago, Mother’s Point of View)-
“Hon, you will be okay there, right?” her mother asked her for the millionth time still worried about her daughter who was now going of to college. Min in return scoffed jokingly before saying, “Mom! I’m fine, I will be fine, I love you forever okay.” making her mother laugh and hug her tightly again. “I love you too Minnie, remember to call me every night! Also, don’t get into trouble!” she called after her daughter who was already happily skipping to her gate, pulling her suitcase quickly as if someone was chasing her. Her mother’s smile broke out as wide as it could full of pride that her daughter had worked so hard that she had made it to the best school in East Asia (and most of the Western Hemisphere), living out her own dream of going back to Korea one day. Her mother hadn’t been to Korea in 13 years and she missed it very dearly. Her whole family was there and she hasn’t seen them personally in a long time. She could only afford to send Min there by herself resulting in Min knowing her way everywhere in Seoul whereas memories of her birthplace were stripping away. All she wanted to do was refresh herself in those memories but sadly, she had no way of doing so. Min’s mother smiled away the sadness of that and focused on her daughter who only seemed to disappear into a speck of nothing. She couldn’t wait to boast on to her American friends about how her own daughter from a struggling family made her way to the top. “Only if her father could witness this,” Min’s mother sighed contentedly gazing towards the exit door before turning on her heel and walking through it.
“I love you honey.”

-FLASHBACK: (a few weeks ago, Min’s Point of View)-
Min didn’t exactly hear those last words that came from her loving mother’s mouth but she definitely knew it was true. If you think you know the true meaning of a tight bond between a mother and daughter, think again. They were closer than ever despite continuous fallouts they have had in the past. Ever since Min’s father died unexpectedly when Min was around six, they had to rely on each other for support. All Min could do was cry when she realized that she would be separated from her mother for a few years. It didn’t seem like too much yet it hurt her the most. This was a definite con to the acceptance but there were pros like getting herself off her mother’s hands so she doesn’t have to make money for two people now or something of that nature so she went with the decision of leaving LA. And here she was, in the LA airport, in the waiting area along with other future passengers on the plane that will take her to her dreams.
She crossed her legs with her book shaking nervously between her fingers.
“This will be great,”

Min stared at the classroom door and sighed at the sight. A few kids were already in there, the ones she assumed to be aces in the class, were setting out their things. Calculators, pencils, and so on laid out on their desks. “So this must be math.” Min thought to herself before reluctantly pressing her palm against the metal door handle.
“This doesn’t seem to be so bad…”
