Getting Down With B.A.P
Chapter 10
Kat’s POV
“ZACH!” I hear Maranda scream from the other room. I shoot out of bed and run to her room. Dae Hyun groggily wakes up and realizes something is wrong from the fact that I got up in the middle of the night so he follows me out the door.
I open their door to see Maranda setting up in bed sobbing with Yong Guk’s hands on her shoulders trying to comfort her. I walk over and wrap my arms around her and she starts to cry onto my shoulder.
“What’s going on?” Him Chan asks setting up in bed.
“What’s wrong with her?” Yong Guk asks me.
“She had another nightmare from an accident that happened a while back.” I rub Maranda’s back as she starts to calm down. All the boys are in the room at this point with questioning looks. She looks up at them and notices the looks she is getting.
“I’m ok guys.” She says whipping her tears. “I’m ok.” She says looking at me.
“Are you sure?” I ask her.
“Yeah. I’m going to go back to sleep.”
I stand up off the bed. “Ok. Good night.” I say as I walk out the room with the boys closing the door behind me.
Maranda’s POV
I keep whipping the tears from my eyes as Kat and the boys walk out the door.
“Are you sure you’re ok?” Yong Guk asks me putting one hand on my shoulder.
“Yeah I’m ok. Just a nightmare.”
“You want to talk about it?”
I ponder whether or not to tell him and I decide just to go ahead.
“It’s kind of a hard story so bear with me.” I say looking at him.
“I’m ready.” He says to me.
“Well, this is also the reason I don’t race anymore.” I say to him pausing. “I had this really close friend of mine that I went to high school with. We did so much together between our classes, homework, musicals, and speech team. And we just really hit it off. Is name was Zach.” I say trailing.
“Zach? That was the name you screamed.”
“Yes. We stayed close friends after high school and he went on a lot of rides with me and watched me race. One day me and Kat were giving each other shit about how she hadn’t ever beat me in a race and the whole crew was there so we decided to have a race. Zach asked to ride with me. And he had done it quite a few times before so of course I said yes. We get into my ’68 charger and head down the road to mine and Kat’s race spot. Bonni went between our cars with a bandana as a flag. We were both off in seconds. I sped past Kat and of course she got hasty and used her first nos to go past me. I waited a few seconds so that as soon as I hit mine I would pass the finish before her. When out of nowhere there was a loud pop followed by screeching. One of my front tires popped which caused me to lose control of the car. I hit a culvert on the side of the road and caused the car to go air born. The car flipped a few times and landed on the passenger side.” I begin to tear up and lose my breathing. I take a moment to calm down before I finish. “I started coughing and looked over at him. I could tell I had a few broken ribs from the seat belt and my head was spinning. Are you ok? I asked Zach.”
I started to cry at this point.
“He didn’t say anything. So I asked him again. He just laid there not responding. I reached my hand over and lightly shook him. I started to freak out and screamed for everyone. I felt the car move slightly and saw Joey pull the driver door open. Joey pulled me out of the car and Tyron pushed the car onto its wheels so that he could get the passenger door open. I stood there wrapped in Joey’s arms in shock as Tyron pulled Zach out of the car. Kat and Bonni ran up to us and saw Zach laying lifeless on the ground in front of Tyron. He looked up at us and made eye contact with Kat. My eyes were tearing up and I couldn’t breathe. He shook his head. I started to scream and fell to the ground on my knees. Kat called 911 while Joey comforted me. It didn’t take long for the ambulance to get there to confirm what we already knew.” I had been crying through the whole last part of what happened. “I was the reason he died. I hadn’t checked the tires that day. I shouldn’t have let him ride with me. It was because of me that any of this happened.”
“It wasn’t your fault. You didn’t know that was going to happen and you were doing what you guys always did.”
“I know but I should not have brought him into my world.”
“He wouldn’t want you to blame yourself. He got into that car because he wanted to and he became part of your world because he wanted to.”
“I know. But yeah. That’s what happened. After Kat’s accident it just brought all these old memories back.” I say laying back down. Yong Guk laid next to me and I wrapped my arms around him. I fell back asleep with him running his fingers through my hair.
Kat’s POV
I walked out of Maranda and Yong Guk’s room and back into mine and Dae Hyun’s. As I sat on the bed ready to go back to sleep I notice that all the boys but Yong Guk was staring me.
“You want to know the story don’t you?” I sighed
“If you are sore you can just lie down and rest. We don’t need to know.” Said Dae Hyun sitting down next to me and putting his arm around my shoulders.
I saw the mini glares the boys were giving him.
“It’s fine.” I said. “It’s a long story and it’s also the reason she quit racing. She had this really close friend that she went to high school with. They did so much together between their classes, homework, musicals, and speech team. And they just really hit it off. His name was Zach.”
“Zach? That was the name she screamed.” Said Him Chan
“Yes. They stayed close friends after high school and he went on a lot of rides with her and watched her race. One day me and Maranda were giving each other shit about how I hadn’t ever beat her in a race so we decided to have a race. Zach asked to ride with her. And he had done it quite a few times before so of course she said yes. They got into her car while I got into my ’03 Mazda RX 7. We head down the road to our race spot. Bonni went between our cars with a bandana as a flag. We were both off in seconds. She sped past me and of course I got hasty and hot headed, using my first nos to go past her. I heard a loud bang and looked into my rearview to see what it was and she had lost control of the car. She hit a culvert on the side of the road and caused the car to go air born. The car flipped a few times and landed on the passenger side.” I said taking a deep breath.
Dae Hyun held me close and Zelo laid down next to me, his head in my lap so I could play with his hair.
“I got out of mine screaming for everyone to hurry. Joey ran pass me with Tyron. Joey pulled the driver door open. He then pulled her out of the car and Tyron pushed the car onto its wheels so that he could get the passenger door open. Maranda stood there wrapped in Joey’s arms in shock as Tyron pulled Zach out of the car. Me and Bonni ran up to them and saw Zach laying lifeless on the ground in front of Tyron. He looked up at us, making eye contact with me. My eyes grew wide. He shook his head. Maranda started to scream and fell to the ground to her knees. I called 911 while Joey comforted her. It didn’t take long for the ambulance to get there to confirm what we already knew.” I was on the verge of crying now.
“So wait. You were ahead of Maranda in the race?” asked Young Jae.
“Yes.” I responded confused.
“So you have beat her before?” he questioned.
“No. This race doesn’t count. She would have beat me. Maranda is my best friend and I can’t do anything but be helpless as she blames herself for his death.” Dae Hyun shooed everyone but Zelo away and we curled up. I quickly fell asleep with their arms tightly around me.
