The Flower Boy
Family and Friends
After that terrible lesson spent with Seokjin, I made my way home muttering under my breath the entire time. Hoping my father wasn’t there to make things worse. I open the door and behold… he was there…
I sigh and continue to walk off towards my room.
“Wonah, come here.” My father said from the lounge.
I roll my eyes with my back turned away. I slowly turn around and head over towards him. When I arrive next to him, he finally takes his eyes off his newspaper and looks up at me. “Well, sit down,” he said as if I should have known before he had told me. I sit down on the couch opposite from him. Silence followed for a bit, which isn’t uncommon between us. “How was school?” He said, finally breaking the silence. As I make eye contact with him, I look down into my lap by instinct.
“Umm… it was good. I made a few friends-."
“I meant class. You go to school to learn do you not?” He cuts me off, looking back into his newspaper, rustling it as he lifts it back up. I look up out of my lap at the newspaper, suddenly feeling anger build inside me. I ball my fists together in my lap, trying to subside the growing anger.
“Yes… Father,” I say through my teeth, quietly.
“Anyway, I called you because I heard you’ve been avoiding your mother’s calls.” Wonwoo you little… “You should call her now. She should be awake now.”
“… Yes.” I reply with emptiness. I stand up slowly feeling the rage and anger subside. I make my way back to my room when I see Wonwoo come out of his room. When we meet eyes, I give him an expression of disappointment and annoyance. He told Dad I hadn’t been talking to Mum… he’s such a goody-two shoes… He opens his mouth to say something but I ignore him by turning away and entering my room, closing the door behind me. I sigh as I throw my bag on my bed. I reach into my pocket and take out my phone to contemplate calling her. Not wanting to face my Father again, I tap the call button, and slowly bring the phone up to my ear, hearing the dialling begin. My heart beat speeds up a little and I realise how nervous I am.
“Wonah!? Oh my gosh I thought you’d never call! How are you? Are you well? How’s that new school you’re in now? Did you make friends?” My mother’s voice fills my ear, bombarding me with questions, not letting me get anything in.
“Mum-“ I try to cut in.
“Oh, I hope you’ve been okay at school. You let Dad know if there’s any problems, ok?”
“MUM!” I shout in slight annoyance, which must have surprised her, because all that followed was silence. “I’m… I’m doing well at school okay, don’t worry. I even found a guy who’s not so appearance-focussed as the girls all are,” I explain slowly.
“A guy?! Wonah~~ Did you find yourself a boyfriend~?” My mother says happily… too happily.
“Seungcheol isn’t that kind of friend, Mum.”
“Ooooh Seungcheol is such a handsome name~”
“Eomma!”
“I’m sorry Wonah, I just always wanted to have these talks with you.”
Me too Mum… I miss you.” I say suprising both myself and Mum.
“I miss you too honey. We’ll see each soon enough. Treat your brother and father well, okay? I’ve got to go, but thank you for calling honey. I love you~” she says in an aegyo voice at the end.
“I love you too Mum.” I said in my best aegyo voice just enough so I wouldn’t throw up. I remove the phone from next to my ear and tap to end the call. That, wasn’t so bad. It was nice to hear her voice again. The one thing i’ve never been able to do was have a comfortable with other people besides my brother and mother.
Back at school the next day I had Chemistry, again. Seeing Seokjin so often made girls around me hate me. And apparently hanging with Seungcheol wasn’t good either. He was more popular than he brought on…
I didn’t trust most girls at this school but these girls were giving me particularly snotty looks. I looked away pretending not to have seen them. “You okay?” I turned to Seungcheol sitting next to me. Catching his eyes I look back into my lap, where my sandwich lies in my hands.
“Uhh, yeah. I’m fine, just a bit tired,” I say, pretending to yawn a little and act tired. Seungcheol and I sat in the seats next to the soccer field, where he’d go and play for a bit and come back to me and rest. He said I needed company. Pfft… I don’t need anyone. I’ve been fine so far, haven’t I? “Seungcheol-ah! Come quickly!” One of his friends shouted from the field. We turn towards each other after hearing this and he smiled at me.
“I’ll be right back okay?” I nodded, slightly smiling. He smiled in response and ran quickly down the seats and towards his friends on the field. It must be so nice I thought, to have something you’re so good at, and to love it at the same time. I watched him playing around and smiling, finding myself smiling at his joy. “Stop smiling.” A voice behind spoke in disgust. I stood and turned around to see the bunch of girls that had been staring at me previously. The main one standing up front of the group with her arms crossed, almost looking down on me.
“I’m sorry what did you say?” I say in disbelief of the nerve of these girls.
“I said,” the girls started and as she said this she grabbed my sandwich right out of my hand and threw it away. “Stop smiling! Seungcheol isn’t yours. Don’t you dare think you’re worthy of him!” She said as if Seungcheol was her actual boyfriend, which even though I hadn’t heard of, I still believed she was just obsessed over Seungcheol. I stared her down, straight in the eyes, daring her to go further. This school is so crazy...
