The Flower Boy

I'm Scared Because I Don't Know

I never wanted to move. But then again when was my opinion ever heard by my father, or by anyone at that. My mother lives in England, and has been for quite some time. Maybe it’s because of me, or my brother. I’ve tried my best to raise him while Dad was always away working, but she would probably disagree somehow. You might think, why is a seventeen year old looking after a twelve year old boy? Why isn’t the Dad there to for the “Father Son” relationship? I’ve asked that question myself quite a few times only to come up with the assumption that, men are idiots. My father doesn’t really notice these things that probably will determine my younger brother, Wonwoo’s future. Men have been and will probably always will be, idiots to women. But then again i’ve lived without my mother for a long time, and no one seems to take a notice to me being, what do they call it? Oh a, “Tomboy” I think it is. Sounds like complete bullshit if you ask me. Why are men and women confined to these defining gender traits? Be yourself…If you can handle yourself…

Sometimes I hear my mother’s voice when i’m sleeping. Just calling my name.
“Wonah… Wonah!” I can’t see her in my sleeping state. I wriggle in my bed, agitated. Tossing and turning, trying to shake the voice off me. She’s not here… i’m dreaming. I open my eyes quickly staring at the ceiling of my room, breathing heavily.
“Wonah…” I turn my head quickly to the direction the voice is coming from. I see Wonwoo standing by my room’s door, timidly peeping around the door. I deeply exhale realising the voice was not my mother’s but my brothers. “What is it?” I croak out as I sit up in my bed, rubbing my eyes.
“Dad left early again…” He repeats the familiar phrase to me. I dismiss him with a nod as I slowly get out of bed, one leg at a time.

There were many times like these where my Dad left at crazy times of the morning, not thinking much of leaving breakfast for us (because of how long it would be sitting out), or even a note saying when he’d be back. I had to grow up pretty fast, for myself and my brother.
Finally out of bed, I staggered to the kitchen to start breakfast, although it took longer for me to get there this morning, since we just moved into a new place. I got out pans and pots to start a English breakfast, of classic eggs and bacon. Wonwoo had already started at a new school, and as for me, I hadn’t started… but should have. “Wonah, are you going to school today?” He says placing himself on a high bench seat, with his head placed in his hands. I sigh as I flip the bacon over in the sizzling pan. “Yeah… I guess I am,” I mumble to him.

I finished up breakfast, and Wonwoo and me sit at the high bench seats, opposite to each other. I start to relax and eat my food when Wonwoo interrupts my fork and it’s journey towards my mouth. “Have you called Mum lately?” He says quietly and bravely. I look up at him straight in the eyes for a few seconds, with no blinking, daring him to continue. “Sorry… she just asked me to ask you.” He said hunching over his breakfast in defeat.
“Wait, ‘she’ asked?” I looked him seriously in the eyes, expecting an answer.
“Yeah… she called me.” He started eating to stop the conversation, but I wasn’t done.
“She called you?”
“She said she knew you wouldn’t answer her…” Wonwoo said awkwardly and with a small voice.
Whether it was true or not, I believed my father was bias towards my brother. He showed a talent in numbers and digits ever since he was a young boy. Me being, well… ‘me’ I showed interest in nothing. My mother always told me it was fine not to know so soon, what I wanted to do. As much as I hated her in some way, I knew she was right.
“I’ll call her. Don’t worry Wonwoo,” I say stabbing the piece of bacon slowly.

I get dressed in the new uniform for school, wishing it didn’t include a skirt. As I look at myself in the mirror wearing the uniform, I sigh as I tug the skirt, trying to make it longer. With no improvement I decided to put shorts on underneath. Looking back at the mirror with the shorts on, i’m satisfied… to some content. The shorts sticking out a little bit, but not too much.
After i’d packed my bag with essentials, I was done. I mean, usually girls would put on their makeup, or do their hair right? That’s what i’ve seen on TV anyways. I never got into all that makeup stuff, and as for my hair, a ponytail was the extent of my hairstyles. Up, and out of the face, all I really needed. My hair was always kept at a sustainable mid-length. My mother has sent me makeup up items, she even tries to teach me in the summers she sometimes comes over in. Something I never really told her was, I wasn’t interested at all. Why do girls wear makeup? To impress others? To impress themselves? To hide themselves? I never asked these questions because there was no one to answer them for me.
