What is Life

It was early morning and the rush hour had begun. People huddled to the subways and inside were packed like sardines in a school of fish. Buses were full of students constantly checking their watches, wishing that they weren’t going to be late.

Despite all the hustle and bustle, birds were chirping and the sun shone brightly, giving warmth to the inhabitants of the Earth. Catherine was making her way to MODE on foot. It was nearing the end of college holidays. As she sipped her vanilla latte, she basked in the warm sun as she tried to enjoy the last few days she could work full time in the office before her new term started. The wind was playing with her pink locks but she found the breeze to be refreshing given the summer heat. Last few days of internship, let’s make the most out of it, she thought.

Clad in her favorite black shirt dress and platforms, she strutted to the building before she halted at the sight of someone.

“석민아...”
“SeokMin-a..”

He was standing just outside the building, leaning against the lamp post. He wore his sunglasses and was clad with a HBA shirt and skinny jeans. As he noticed her presence, he took off his sunglasses and walked towards her.

“Hey, Kitty.” He grinned his signature smile while she froze on the spot.

He decided to drag her by the wrist to the nearest coffee shop, making sure that none of his fans were following. Once they sat down, awkward silence ensued. Both were itching to start the conversation but none could find the right words to start.

In the end, DK initiated, “You wanted to meet me, right? What’s wrong?” He tried his best to keep his cool when his insides were practically boiling since he knew the truth.

She had to desperately hold back her tears, not wanting to expose her vulnerability.

“I did but not anymore. Not a single message and here you are, feigning innocence. I don’t need you and I don’t wish to tell you anything anymore.”
“Hey, come on, Kitty. You know why I couldn’t just reply you right?”

“Stop. Calling. Me. Kitty.” She growled. Her heart was conflicted. She knew that perhaps it wasn’t because he didn’t care but because he couldn’t reply and help her. But, she decided right then that she had to learn to be independent, to move on.

She stood up, wanting to dash out of the shop but DK managed to grab her wrist.

“Please, you have to listen to me. At least, let me explain.” He begged while putting on his puppy eyes.

She turned around to face him, eyes glistening with tears. “Look. Just back off, okay. If you can’t be there for me, stop it. Stop caring. Go back and don’t come to see me again.”

He couldn’t bear to see her getting hurt again and he could tell that he was causing her pain again. DK finally let go of her wrist and out she went. Dejected, he started to slump down on his chair, not sure of what to do. I didn’t abandon you, Kitty. I never wanted to, he thought.

He stayed still for a while before he put on his sunglasses and made his exit.
