The Foreigner and Got7

Talking with a Stranger

Ayana’s POV
“It’s getting late.” JB said as he looked up at the clock on my dining room wall.
“It’s only 9:30.” Mark said.
“We have practice early in the morning.” Junior said as he got up.
“We should get going. Ayana…” JB stood up as I looked over and I noticed a nervous look on his face as he took a look at his other team members. “Can I talk to you for a second?” It took me by surprise but I quietly nodded my head as seven pairs of eyes landed on me. “Great, let’s take a walk outside.”
Avoiding everyone’s gaze, I grabbed my sweater and shoes and with a quick look at the others resting in my apartment, I followed JB out.
“It’s quite chilly out, are you sure you’re not cold?” JB asked after a long silence. The neighborhood I lived in was quiet as it was and at night the streets were deserted.
“I’m good, thank you. I like the cool breeze.” We fell into another uncomfortable silence and I wondered what it was he wanted to talk about.
“So…you wanted to say something?” My fingers twitched nervously in my pocket as I waited for an answer.
JB cleared his throat and looked over at me, our eyes meeting momentarily before I looked down at my feet.
“Yeah…about yesterday…” My eyes drifted to meet his once again and I realized how fidgety he was as he tried to look for something to do with her arms.
Knowing the nervous feeling all too well, I swallowed my own nervousness and reached out and took one of his hands in mine. My heart beat sped up but I closed my eyes took a deep breath and traced a character on his hand. Opening my eyes, I was embarrassed to see that JB had frozen completely and was now staring right at me.
I immediately dropped his hand and took a step back, almost tripping over the sidewalk before he reached out and steady me. His grip on my arm was strong and I was glad it was my left and not my right.
“Sorry…” I said at my clumsiness.
“No…It’s okay. That thing you just did, my grandma used to do it when I was a kid. How do you know about it?”
“I watch too much anime…” I said after a moments silence and everything was serious for just a second before we both burst out laughing.
“You like anime, huh?” I nodded as we grew comfortable and started walking again, the streetlights casting long shadows on the gray pavement.
“To tell you the truth, I was obsessed. Still am. That’s how I got introduced to K-pop a few years back.”
“I see.” I looked over at JB to see him smiling as he looked down at our feet striding in rhythm. “Getting back to what I wanted to talk about… I wanted to thank you personally.”
“Please, it’s-“
“No, let me finish.” He stopped me before I could say anymore and I remained silent as I heard him out. “All of us, we worked really hard to debut and we wouldn’t be anywhere we are without the help of our fans. They’re the whole reason we exist…well also maybe JYP….” He trailed off for a second, going off track before shaking his head and looking at me sincerely. “What I’m trying to say is I’ve never met someone like you. What you did for a stranger, I don’t think I could ever do. So thanks…for protecting me, for being an IGot7…and well for everything.” An awkward silence followed as I thought of what to say. “Also for the corndogs. They were good.”
I almost laughed but I managed to stifle it and try to break the ice. “What about the lemonade? It wasn’t good?”
As if caught off of guard, JB gave me the most confused look I’d ever seen on his usually cool and composed face. “Wha…I mean yes. Yes of course. Thank you.” He took a step back and bowed in gratitude as he thanked me once again in Korean and I shook my head and told him not to.
“Listen, your job is being an idol right? So what you do is sing, dance, and create wonderful memories with your fans, staff, and group members. My job is to protect others. So that’s exactly what I did. It doesn’t matter if I am on duty or off. I took an oath and that’s what I’ll do.” JB listened quietly as I calmly explained why I did what I did.
“I understand.” We made a turn around the block back to my apartment and looked up at the building looming not too far away.
“JB, always try your best and have a blast. You’ve already come so far and there’s still a longer way to go. Remember, Got7, always fighting.” I said as we approached the building. I didn’t look behind me as I entered the first floor of the building and walked towards the elevator. When the elevator door opened, I turned to see a blushing JB run in.
“Sorry.” He mumbled. The entire ride up, he avoided my gaze and I wondered if I’d said something wrong. When we entered the apartment, the others were sitting in my living room, looking suspiciously non-mischievous.
“Alright, let’s go.” JB said, taking on the roll as leader.
“Thank you for inviting us over. We had a great time.” Mark said as he walked up to me. I looked up at him, realizing that he really was tall. “What?” He said when I didn’t look away.
“You’re…really tall.” I smiled as he blushed and bit his lip.
“Yeah…I know.” I watched as the members put on their shoes and one by one, they waved bye and exited my apartment.
“Take care of yourself.” I nodded my head, avoiding his gaze as he stepped out and I watched as they disappeared into the elevator.
I ran to the window and watched as they exited the building and climbed into their waiting van. I smiled when Mark looked up and waved at me, somehow knowing that I was there and watching.
“Wow.” I looked around my living room, empty now of my guests. “I can’t believe Got7 was here.” Too tired to twirl around, I shook my head and smiled as I tidied up and got changed to go to bed.
“Another day of nothing tomorrow.” I said aloud as I stared up at the ceiling. When I turned, I noticed Jackson’s jacket still hanging on the chair and I cursed at myself for not remembering to return it. Getting up, I picked it up and ran my hand along its smooth leather surface. A light musky scent drifted up from it and I brought it closer to my nose, deeply inhaling. Anyone else watching me might have thought it was creepy but I loved the smell. I felt a tingling in my body as I remembered exactly what he’d said to me earlier.
“You smell nice.” My eyes shot open as I relived the thought and I inhaled again clutching his jacket to my chest.
“You’re the one who smells amazing.” Deciding I was being too weird, I put the jacket back down and climbed into bed and stared at my phone. Nothing. No texts or anything. Sighing, I put the phone down and closed my eyes.
