Last Chance
Chapter 4
It doesn’t go unnoticed.
Chanyeol’s mom is surprised when he brings home a friend that isn’t Baekhyun. In fact, she seems skeptical of their friendship, convinced Jongdae is Chanyeol’s drug dealer since Chanyeol was so reluctant to make new friends after Baekhyun ditched him. At least, she’s skeptical until Jongdae practically charms the pants off of her with his self deprecating humor and good manners.
“Keep him,” she tells Chanyeol. Chanyeol’s not sure whether she means as a friend or a romantic interest, because he definitely doesn’t see Jongdae that way, and he's pretty sure Jongdae doesn't either.
His mom isn’t the only one who’s surprised when Chanyeol and Jongdae become friends. Before long, the school is buzzing about him and Jongdae. He can’t help but wonder what Baekhyun thinks of it- he doesn’t have to wonder for long though. One day as Chanyeol walks down the hallway with Jongdae, he notices Baekhyun’s eyes narrow at the sight of Jongdae, but Chanyeol doesn’t think much of it. Baekhyun still raises his voice in the obnoxiously loud voice reserved only for passing by Chanyeol, announcing whatever he and his girlfriend-of-the-week are doing after school. Only this time Chanyeol doesn’t really care anymore.
So nothing much has changed from the start of the school year, right?
At least, that’s what Chanyeol thinks, until one day in homeroom, he hears a familiar voice cutting through the tune of “My Lady” playing in his headphones as he doodles.
“That is the gayest song I have ever heard in my entire life,” it says flatly. Chanyeol turns to find Byun Baekhyun sitting in the chair next to him. Despite his surprise, Chanyeol somehow makes a response.
“Hey now, let’s not go around assigning sexual orientations onto songs,” he says playfully. Baekhyun scoots closer to him, eyes gleaming.
“Speaking of gay,” he continues coolly, “you’re new little friend Jongdae is definitely a homosexual.” Chanyeol supposes he should be surprised, but he’s not. Jongdae pretty much assaults the coffee shop barista, Minseok, with pickup lines every time he sees him, and Chanyeol isn’t dumb enough to not notice this.
“So?” Maybe I’m gay too, is what Chanyeol really wants to add, but he doesn’t.
The look on Baekhyun’s face is shocked at Chanyeol’s question, but quickly changes to a simpering expression.
“I just want to make sure he’s not putting the moves on my best friend,” coos Baekhyun, sliding an arm around Chanyeol’s shoulders. To his dismay, Chanyeol’s heart starts pounding, and Chanyeol prays that Baekhyun can’t feel it. He also really hopes Baekhyun can’t hear the million thoughts racing through his head. If he’s totally honest, some of them are kind of inappropriate, since Baekhyun’s arm is around his shoulder. And some of them are kind of humorous in an ironic sense, since Chanyeol is actually trying to put “the moves” on Baekhyun.
But most of them are upset.
Best friend. But Chanyeol doesn’t want to be best friends. He wants to be more than that. Sooo much more than that.
“Well?” Baekhyun’s looking at him expectantly for a response. Chanyeol guesses he takes too much time to respond, because Baekhyun’s expression turns incredulous. “No way… he is coming on to you! Oh my God! Are you reciprocating? Has my best friend been gay this entire time? Wait until I tell Taeyeon! Oh this is too good!” Baekhyun stands up to leave as he whips out his phone to spread the news. Chanyeol’s surprised to see his own hand reach out and slap it out of Baekhyun’s hands. Baekhyun screeches. “Don’t touch my phone, you homosexual! Ew!” he sneers. Oh snap. He. Did. Not. Just. Say. That. Chanyeol stands up, hurt and desperate for Baekhyun to know his feelings.
“We’re not best friends. I don’t see you that way anymore.” I love you. I mean, right now I also really want to punch you in the face. But I love you. As he turns to walk out, he can’t help but see the hurt and confused expression on Baekhyun’s face. The kind that makes him only want to hug him and tell him everything is alright, that he takes it all back. But Chanyeol doesn’t. He can’t. Because everything isn’t alright. And so when he hears Baekhyun call out for him to wait, he can only walk faster out of the room.
