Last Chance
Chapter 3
Any contact they had is dropped. Even when they pass each other in the hallway, they don’t speak, or even look at each other. Baekhyun will just turn to talk to Dara and Luhan, while Chanyeol keeps his eyes forward. The rumors drop as the student body seems to accept the split.
The drama of Chanyeol and Baekhyun quickly fades away as new scandals emerge. “Baekhyun and Chanyeol” quickly turns into “Baekhyun and Taeyeon” or “Yixing and Luhan.” In fact, all of the whispers that surrounded him changed so quickly, Chanyeol wonders if the drama even really happened. Until one day, this little pipsqueak of a boy who sits next to him in pottery asks him about it. Well, it’s not so much that the boy asks- it’s more like Chanyeol overhears him mutter it under his breath.
“You and Baekhyun aren’t really friends anymore.” It’s not really a question more so than a statement. Chanyeol frowns, even though he knows it’s true.
“I think we’re still friends deep down,” he responds.
“Liar.” Chanyeol can’t help but be shocked at how blunt the pipsqueak is. Even though the pipsqueak is correct. It is a lie- it’s what Chanyeol wants to believe, but it’s not the truth. Baekhyun hasn’t shown any sign of concern at the loss of a friend, and hasn’t shown any kind of remorse either.
“That’s not tru-” he sputters indignantly. Might as well think positively, right?
“It is. Now shut up and let me finish,” the pipsqueak interrupts. “You’re not friends deep down, because deep down, you don’t want to be friends with Baekhyun. You like him. In fact, you like-like him.” Chanyeol could only stare at him. Had he been that obvious? “I can help you get Baekhyun if you’d like,” the pipsqueak continues nonchalantly, “if you’re interested. I’m Jongdae.” Smug little fucker.
“What do you want?” asks Chanyeol slowly. Jongdae is far too knowledgeable about Chanyeol for his own comfort.
“Something to spice up my life. I’m bored and watching you pine after Baekhyun is starting to get slow.” Chanyeol wonders if Jongdae’s one of those adrenaline junkies that get a kick out of excitement and drama.
In the end, Chanyeol agrees to hang out with Jongdae after school. Not because he really wants Jongdae to help him “get the guy of his dreams” as Jongdae puts it, but mostly because he doesn’t want Jongdae spreading around the word of Chanyeol’s crush. And if he’s totally honest, Chanyeol’s been kind of lonely recently.
The first thing Chanyeol notices is how similar Baekhyun and Jongdae are. Short. Loud. Funny. Outgoing. The next thing he notices is how different the two are. Baekhyun’s personality is noisy, sharp witted, and practically demands for attention, very much like a small child. Jongdae somehow seems more mature and relaxed, with his (somewhat self-deprecating) troll sense of humor, bright energy, and laid back style. Before long, Chanyeol finds himself hanging out with Jongdae everyday that week after school. Jongdae knows his way throughout Seoul really well, and the pair visit a new place each time. A bubble tea shop that Jongdae’s little brother, Sehun, likes. Some cinnamon roll cafe called Tumblr that Jongdae stumbled upon by accident late one night. A coffee shop where Jongdae flirts mercilessly with the barista, whose name plate reads Minseok. As he gets to know Jongdae, Chanyeol can’t help but suspect Jongdae was a little bit lonely before too. He enjoys Jongdae’s company though, and the pair quickly becomes good friends.
