One Shot House

The door creaked open and Kelly pulled the blanket over her head.
“Wake up, lazybum! We’re going on a date today!” her boyfriend walked into the room.
His presence, though, was ignored by Kelly. She pressed her hands onto her ears tightly. Annoyed, he went inside the blanket and began tickling her.
“Okay. Ha, ha, ha! Stop that, ha, ha! Kai! Stop!” Kelly surrendered without hesitation.
She reluctantly trudged off her bed and into the bedroom. Kai grinned and started playing his phone while waiting for her. Ten minutes later, Kelly came out of the bedroom. She was wearing a blue dress and her hair was let down. They linked arms as they strolled to their destination.
Birds were chirping and the trees were swaying. A cold but comfortable breeze occasionally blew across. Kelly and Kai strolled side by side. Kelly’s head leaned on Kai’s shoulders often. Autumn leaves fell to the ground, completing the pretty scene. What Kelly didn’t know was that this wasn’t a normal date. There was a surprise for her later.
Out of the blue, without any warning, the ground started to shake. Cracks started appearing beneath their feet. At first, it was a web of cracks but it grew bigger and spread faster. Alarmed, Kelly raised her head from Kai’s shoulder. Her eyes were wide. A mixture of feelings washed over her- fear, sadness and many more.
“Kai, we have to run and find a place to hide,” Kelly said.
Kai nodded and squeezed her hand, giving her encouragement. They started to run. The cracks spread faster than ever, in an incredible speed. Then, it happened. The disaster that ruined everything. While they were running, Kelly did not notice a tree root protruding out of the pavement. She tripped over it and fell. The ground shook more, causing the already weak tree to be even weaker. BAM! The tree trunk broke, crushing Kelly under it. She could feel her ribcage break. She had hit the floor with her head so hard that she felt drowsy. It was only a matter of time before she blacked out.
“Kai, you have to go and find help. You have to, before it is too late,” Kelly told Kai, who was trying to lift the tree trunk up but wasn’t strong enough.
“Okay, but you must hang on. Remember, I will forever be by your side,” Kai glanced at her for one last time before turning away to find help.
Kelly watched as the figure of her boyfriend disappear. Cracks widened beneath her. Her vision blurred and darkness engulfed her.
Twenty minutes later, the earthquake had stopped and Kai came back with a few firefighters and paramedics. The spot that once laid Kelly had a gigantic hole. She was nowhere to be found.
“NO!!!!!” Kai rushed to the hole but he could not see anything but darkness.
The firefighters went into the hole and came out with a very bloody Kelly. Tears welled up in Kai’s eyes. If only he had been faster. His girlfriend looked lifeless. Colour drained from her face. The paramedics immediately put her onto a stretcher and sent her to the hospital. Outside the Emergency Operating Theatre, Kai waited nervously. He looked at the diamond ring in his hands. He was going to propose to her there and then but…
“She is in coma and we are not sure whether she will survive this or will she ever wake up. We will be putting her in the Intensive Care Unit. We did our best. I’m sorry,” the doctor apologized as the nurses wheeled Kelly to the Intensive Care Unit.
Kai staggered back. Why? Why did this happen to them? He looked around him. Many people were crying. So many people lost their loved ones because if one earthquake. However, he had not lost his fully yet. He had to be strong for her. Kai dashed to the Intensive Care Unit. He sat next to her, holding her hand. Tears started to drip down his cheeks.
“Darling, you have to be okay. You have to wake up and be my wife. That’s a promise, okay? You promised me you would never leave me. If you break a promise, you would go to hell so you have to wake up and scold me again, okay?” Kai said before drifting off to sleep.
Kelly waved to Kai. She was wearing a wide smile like always.
“Kelly, you’re awake? Kelly, wait for me!” Kai yelled.
He started to run towards her but she seemed to have not heard him because she started running away. Out of nowhere, a boy with a pair of fluffy, white wings stopped Kai from going any further.
“She’s going to a better and nicer place and you can’t stop her,” the boy said.
Kai awoke from his dream as a devastating straight line that represented Kelly’s heartbeat drew…
