I Can't Tell
Jae Mi
I sat in the waiting room, watching sick people go past me. The nurse finally calls my name to tell me my results and I sit down in front of my doctor. "Kang Jae Mi?" He asks and I nod. He looks through some papers on his clipboard and says "You have a heart disease." I stare at him. "We're looking for a donor right now, but if we don't, you could die in five to six months." I feel like crying, but I don't. "Would you like me to call your parents and let them know?" He asks me and I shake my head quickly. "You have my cell number, please call that if I get a donor. Do you have any prescription that I need if I have some kind of attack?" He nods and hands me a bottle of pills, giving me instructions and sending me home, making me promise to tell my parents. I agree, but don't say when. Walking back to the apartment, I start to feel empty, realizing that I could die. But it was the last year of high school, and I still hadn't confessed to Luhan. I stare up at his building that was built feet away from ours. Shaking my head, I go up to the apartment and call hello to the empty house. Eomma and aboeji were overseas again, negotiating contracts. I sigh and go into my room, glancing at my wall of glass that faced Luhan's bedroom. Our balconies were inch's apart, but thank god I had a lock on my glass door. Setting my medicine on my desk, fall back onto my bed, staring up at the ceiling. I hear something hit the glass and I looks to my left, seeing Tao, Luhan's friend knocking on my door. I sigh and get up, opening it. "What?" "Have you seen Luhan? I can't seem to find him." I think about my condition and make the decision. "Him? How would I know where that douche bag went." I make my face show disdain as I shut the door. Tao looked at me in shock but climbs back over to Luhan's room. I curl up on my bed, hating what I'd just done. I really loved Luhan, but these past years, I couldn't show it, so we fought. I bet Tao was going to tell Luhan what I just said and tomorrow at school, we're going to fight. I hold back the tears, not allowing myself to cry because of it. The next day in class, Luhan sits down next to me and says "So I'm a douche bag now, huh?" I laugh quietly to myself although I was crying on the inside. "Well fine, it's not like you were anything special." He says and gets up, going to sit next to Tao. I lean back in my chair and Soo Young, the prettiest girl in school (by vote) stands in front of my desk. "Why don't you keep away from my oppa?" She sneers and I laugh. Oppa, and yet she was a year older then him, getting held back because she was stupid. "I'm watching you Kang Jae Mi, one wrong move and you'll get a visit from me." She says and leaves. I sigh and take out my staff notebook, jotting down a few melodies that I'd come up with just now. Ignoring the teacher during class, I grin when the bell rings for lunch. I stretch and hit something behind me. Slowly turning around, I find my elbow in Luhan's stomach and start laughing even though I felt bad. "Ya! Apologize for hitting me!" He says and puts me in a headlock. I bite his arm and he lets go swearing. I quickly escape to the bathroom and sit there laughing in the stall at how stupid I was. How was I going to keep this secret from everybody. I try to open the stall door but it won't budge. Water is suddenly dumped on my head and then still burning cigarettes are tossed on me. I almost shriek, but that would give the girls satisfaction. I just quickly wipe the cigarettes off of me before they burn me too much and hug my knees until a cleaning lady unblocks the door. I get to the classroom and it was deserted. I see that it's already past five and check my phone. There are ten messages.
