Give Me A Smile

Heterochromia

Kang Taeyang
I sit on a bench in the Emergency Room, slowly realizing what the doctor had told me. When I'd gotten home, I had found mom on her bed with her wrist cut. I had quickly called 119, but a few minutes ago, they told me she had died. I guess that's what I get for being different from other people. I get up and go into the hospital's bathroom, staring at my reflection, my violet and blue eyes look back at me with hatred. Splashing water on my face, I go back to the empty apartment, and stand in front of mom's bed. Grabbing the sheets off of it, I stuff them in the trash bag in my hand and toss it in the dumpster, along with the mattress. I quickly sort through all the things in the house, throwing out whatever I didn't need in the next place I was going to live or whatever I deemed unimportant. After calling another complex, I am able to rent a place much larger for less money. Grabbing my suitcase, I slide my aviators on and catch a cab to the apartment building, meeting the landlord. She smiles at me and gives me the code to the door and I go up to it. Punching the code in, I open the door and stop, dropping my phone as I look at a guy who had only a towel wrapped around his waist, with a toothbrush in his mouth. He looks over at the door and almost chokes. He suddenly bolts to a room on my right, slamming the door behind him. I hear water running and then he opens the door a crack and shouts "Yongguk, Himchan, Youngjae, Yongup, Zelo, get the hell to the living room!", before slamming the door again. I hear a bunch of groans and a group of boys shuffle into the view. I nearly have a coughing fit when I see them in only boxers. Dropping whatever's in my hands, I quickly turn around with my hands up. "Holy shit!" I hear one of them say and they all run back to their rooms to put clothes on. I turn back around to find all six of them fully clothes and standing there looking at me. "T-the l-landlady said that I could rent this place." I stutter, still recovering from the shock of seeing that much boy. "That crazy hag," One of them mutters and they all nod. There's a knock on the door and I open it. "All getting acquainted?" The landlady asks happily, stepping into the over sized apartment. "Ahjumma, why are you making us live with this person?" The rude one complains. "What, do you want me to kick you guys out for not paying on time? It's either live with Kang Taeyang or I kick you out." She barks and they cower. She turns to me and smiles, "Follow me, I'll show you the room that you'll be using." and I follow her to a room a the end of the hallway. We go in and I gape, it was filled with junk. The boys had used it as a storage room. "You'll need to clean it out of course, but it's a good room." She smiles at me. "If these boys ever bother you, just come to me and I'll knock some sense into them." I nod and we go back out to the living room where all six of the boys had sat down on the couches. "You better be nice to her," The landlady threatens and leaves after they all nod. I just stand there awkwardly and the guy that I'd seen first comes up to me. "Why do you wear those shades? Even in your own house," I back up a little bit, "I have a hangover, light hurts." He smirks and goes to take them off. I quickly snap my eyes shut and curl up with my knees to my chest. "Ya! Why won't you let me see your eyes!" He says and I hear them all crowd around me. He grabs my chin and lifts my head up to face the ceiling, "Open your eyes," He barks and I do, causing them to all lurch back. Getting up, I grab my shades and put them back on, glaring at them even if they can't see me do it. Grabbing my suitcase, I go to my room and slam the door, locking it before taking off my shades. Sighing, I look around and decide to get to work. I quickly sort out what was to be thrown away and what to ask the boys if they wanted it or not. Slipping my shades back on, I go and look for cleaning supplies and find them in the closet next to my room. Bringing them back, I quickly stack the things for the boys outside my door and bring the trash out to the dumpster before sweeping and mopping the floor. After the floor is dry, I pull the mattress and dresser back into the room. I put my clothes in the dresser and then open the window, enjoying the fresh breeze and stepping out onto the fire escape. Glancing at my phone, I go back in and grab my wallet, closing and locking the window before going to work.
