When I Opened My Eyes

I blink my eyes open but the light is so bright, I shut them again to just listen and feel. There's a steady beeping noise to one side, the smell of antiseptics in the air, the sound of voices in the distance and maybe someone breathing closer by. Hospital, I think. Ugh.

I start to catalog how I feel. Am I hurt? Am I sick? I feel foggy as if I had been drugged and my thoughts aren't too clear. My whole body aches but especially my lower torso. I figure nothing hurts too much so I guess I'll live. I crack open one eye, it's so bright as I look around.

Yep, there's those nice white institutional walls. I see an IV running from my arm and the heart monitor I heard beeping next to it. At least the steady beeping let's me know I'm doing just fine. Just then I hear a snuffling from the other side of the bed. I crack open the other eye against the glare from the window and see a gorgeous man asleep in the chair next to me.

I smile just looking at my husband. He's so handsome even when asleep, my HyunBin is. His personality is so big sometimes I think I'll be overwhelmed by him but he's such a caring and thoughtful man, I'm truly blessed that he's come into my life. You can't see his beautiful dimples while asleep and I can't see his gorgeous eyes either. His long lashes are too pretty for a man, I think and let out a small giggle. Oh that was a mistake, as my midrift explodes in pain.

The noise must have awoken the light sleeper as he blinks and rubs his eyes. He looks over at me and notices I'm awake. He reaches for my hand and grasps it tightly. "How do you feel, ____________-ah?" he asks.

"A bit sore," I reply. "So?" I ask, knowing he'll fill me in on what's going on. I know I should be asking more but my brain is still foggy from whatever drugs they gave me. What happened?

"Everything went perfect," he says and leans over to give you a peck on the lips. "You both did fine."

Both!?, you think. You're about to ask him more when a nurse comes in rolling a cart. HyunBin walks over to the cart and pulls out the most adorable baby you've ever seen. He is looking down at that little bundle as if he's holding the world in his arms. You hear him murmer, "Want to go meet your omma?"

You gasp as it all comes rushing back. The pregnancy, the fall down the stairs, the trip in the ambulance and the emergency c-section. That's our son he's holding. You start to tear up as you stare intently at the bundle in his arms. You hear the nurse leave the room but can't tear your eyes away as Binnie walks closer.

"___________-ah, I'd like you to meet our son, Kim SangJoon." HyunBin leans down and carefully places your son into your arms. You feel your heart racing in your chest.

"Hello," I whisper as I carefully catalog his every feature and count his tiny fingers and toes. I can feel the smile splitting my face and the tears streaming down my cheeks. I look up at my gorgeous husband, "You're right, TaePyung-ah. He's perfect." I am overflowing with joy that these two perfect men are all mine.

HyunBin has tears in his own eyes as he looks back at me. He smiles and cups my cheek while saying, "Thank you, _________-ah for entering my life and giving me this wonderful family. Saranghae" He leans in for a breathless kiss. I don't want it to end but then the baby lets out a small gugrle. It's so cute we both break apart laughing and look down at our treasure.

And he's right, I think. We have a wonderful family and future ahead of the three of us. I can't wait to go meet it, with my Binnie and my baby by my side.
