Heart and Seoul

A Mother's Silence

Sunday evening crystal and I were at the library looking at books based off our classes on what we needed more explaining on.
"how was the lil study lesson?" Crystal grinned at me.
"it went well, he's a big help to me,"
"if he's a star student why does he skip the most?"
I shrugged, "you talk as if I know his life story," I laughed.
"I know I know, I just find it weird,"
"maybe hes just that good," I guess.
We continued to quietly read our books and write notes in our notebooks. I looked up a couple drawing tutorials online to see other styles of drawing.
It seems everyone is so good.. I thought to myself, I'll never get anywhere close to a skill like these people. I continued to wright in my notebook and began to think of Jungsoo again and what he had covered on that canvas. I was never the type to intrude on ones privacy but curiosity has gotten the best of me.
About 3 hours later we walked out the library to go back to our dorm to call and check up on our parents. When we got halfway there I looked up and saw Jungsoo sitting at the top of the hill. I stopped and crystal kept walking then stopped to see what I was doing.
"I'll catch up later," I told her then ran over to the tall hill. I slowed my pace as I got closer.
"seems like I'm caught," he said without turning towards me.
I frowned, "do you have an eye in the back of your head?"
He turned with a small smile, "I just knew it was you once I felt the atmosphere change.." he said.
I sat next to him in the grass, "is it a good feeling or bad?"
"more like a..relaxed feeling," he said.
I nodded my head, "I like the sound of that..."
"I know you have a question," he said suddenly.
I looked at him, "what do you mean?"
He looked at the cloudless sky, "there's something on your mind, I can feel it."
I looked at the ground, "well I was curious on why you where absent so much,"
He continued to look at the sky, "I find quiet places to bond with my loved ones,"
I gave a nod then realized he was in the middle of a quiet place, "oh. Did I intrude on something?" I asked quietly.
He looked at me and gave a small laugh, "No. Mother doesn't mind,"
I Cocked my head to the side, "mother?"
He looked down, "she passed away a month ago," he said softly then he looked at me with a smile, "but don't fret about it, I knew it would happen and I prepared for it. We just communicate through silence now,"
My heart had a strange feeling, and I had this urge to give him a hug. "I'm sorry to hear that," I said softly.
He shook his head, "it's ok. I'm just glad that she's out of her misery, she's in a better place now."
"what happened to her?" I asked carefully.
"cancer."
We sat in silence for the longest, then a smooth breeze came through. The air smelled of fresh flowers.
"she likes your company," he said.
I smiled, "I'm glad to be accepted by her,"
Silence usually made me uncomfortable but sitting on the hill with Jungsoo felt so natural and calming. "mind if I talk to her?"
"sure"
I cleared my throat, "hello, my name is Camille. I'm a new friend of your son," I said, "he's a great person to." I smiled as it became silent again.
"do you communicate with your mother?" he asked.
"yeah," then I realized that it was getting late and I haven't called my mom all day today. "and I should call her before I go to bed."
"then go talk to her," he spoke calmly.
I stood up, "it was nice meeting your mother,"
"she was pleased to meet you,"
-------------------------------

I began to take Jungsoo's advice in drawing class and everything began to become more clear to me. My Sketches became more neat and I started to erase less and less. Even my professor could see the change in my work through the month.
It was our 4th Saturday meeting, I walked into the classroom and saw Jungsoo sitting at our usual spot. He turned at me, "good afternoon," he smiled.
I took my seat, "good afternoon to you as well,"
"so, how are you feeling about your work so far?"
I sighed, "I feel a little more confident. Your advice really helps me,"
"good, I'm happy to know."
"but I realized, you've covered everything for me before this semester is even over. And there's not much to study for."
"we can always use this time to talk or share a moment of silence together,"
I smiled, "I don't mind that,"
It became quiet again and I looked past his arm and saw the covered canvas again. "is it ok for me to see what that is?" I asked pointing at the covered object.
Jungsoo looked at it and got quiet as if He was thinking of an answer, "this..." he said grabbing the canvas, "is my pride and joy..."
"oh, I'm sorry if it's to personal of a thing," I said.
"no it's ok. I feel comfortable enough to show you." he said, he began to slowly uncover the soft white cloth and exposed a portrait of a beautiful older lady wearing a pure white dress. I gasped at its flawless sight, it was so clean and so realistic you would think her face would come through the canvas.
"it's beautiful.." I said in awe, "is this your mother?"
"yes. This is her,"
"she's beautiful," I said.
"you can hold it if you like," he insisted.
"I- I couldn't. I'd feel terrible if I mess it up,"
He gave a soft laugh, "you won't mess it up," he said giving it to me, "I trust you,"
I held the light canvas in my hands and looked closer at the colored drawing. It was all so perfect; he even drew the blemishes of her skin so naturally and realistically.
"many have offered thousands to buy it," Jungsoo said, "but I've denied all offers, I believe that you cannot put a price on a person I love."
"and I agree completely," I said, "this is truly a priceless piece of work,"
I handed the picture back to him but I pulled my hand back at the touch if his surprisingly cold hand. He pulled his hand away as well tucking it under his arm. "your hand is freezing," I said.
"oh it's nothing," he said with a small smile, "it's normal, it'll warm up soon,"
"ok," I said but I still had a concerned look at him, "also...if you need help with anything, I can try my best to help. It's the least I can do,"
"thank you," he said quietly then looked into my eyes. "your different from most girls.."
I smiled, "how so?"
"I've never met a girl so...caring and so..curious about me. Usually the girls I meet only look for hook ups just so they can brag to their girlfriends that they been with me." he took his glasses off to rub his eyes, "but you, a foreign girl from another country comes here and makes me feel....at peace. And it's almost as if you are beginning to understand me,"
"well I'm glad to be the one to make you feel that way,"
"and it's funny, I always thought most Americans were rude and insensitive. No offense to you that is,"
I waved him off, "non taken, I'm just happy that you are happy,"
He laughed and shook his head, "say, would you like to go to this restaurant with me next Saturday? Its suppose to be Indian I believe and I've never been,"
"of course!"
A faint pink appeared in his cheeks, "I can't wait.
